It depends on whether (a) women and (b) the dead are allowed to vote.
Popularity is an elusive concept. Current stars are probably more popular than players who are historical figures. Nobody was ever more popular than Babe Ruth in his time, but that doesn't guarantee he'd win in a poll today. Jeter is certainly the most popular Yankee of his era, and you do have to go back to Mantle to find a real comparator.
BTW, someone should make sure those plays didn't infringe on the award-wining "Death of Jeter" BBTF thread.
