Brian Cashman is keeping Ben Francisco around to “piss everybody off”

The Yankees designated infielder Alberto Gonzalez for assignment this afternoon in order to make room for the newly-acquired Reid Brignac. Some thought that Ben Francisco‘s roster spot could be in jeopardy, as he’s hitting just .114 (5-for-44) in 21 games, but Yankees general manager Brian Cashman joked to reporters today that he’s keeping him around for a very important reason.

France needs all the pitching they can get, look for Pettitte to throw a lot of innings. Heck, Jeff Francoeur may have to throw a few innings for the Frenchies.

He isn't going to pitch. Either he dropped out at the last second or the USA brass picked Derek Holland as the lefty starter instead.

No Tulo on the US roster.

Apparently the concern over his recovery comes from the WBC, as insurance is involved:

The door remains slightly ajar that he could be added later. It’s Tulo’s understanding that the WBC committee would need to see him play in spring training games testing his surgically-repaired left groin before deciding whether to move forward. The WBC would have to insure his contract, assuming a risk given the $140 million remaining on his deal.
