If Mariano wants to come back he should come back. Short of something truly scandalous (game fixing, PED) there is nothing that is going to tarnish him in any meaningful way.

I go around and around on retirements. There is a part of me that wants to see players retire before they get old. The idea of going out on top sounds really good to me. At the same time I think there is something about the Steve Carlton retirement tour and while it was sad to see Lefty get knocked around and released by about 5 teams there is something gratifying that we truly saw every useful pitch of Steve Carlton's life. When Carlton was finally done, he was done. There is not a time when you think "I wonder if he had one more year left", it was undoubtedly over.

As a fan I'm selfishly glad I didn't miss anything. If I were a player I think I'd be able to enter retirement gracefully knowing that I truly "left it all on the field."

I've kind of thought this since he hurt himself. I don't look forward to him getting whaled on by all sorts of guys who shouldn't be getting hits off Mariano Rivera. He's going to get old at some point, and selfishly I don't want to see a proud man get embarassed by time and possibly by the Minnesota Twins.

But I think that my opinion is completely worthless in this. It's his decision, and that of the Yankees.

"There is no guarantee that he will be astoundingly great" seems to me to be a pretty poor reason to say that a guy who has consistently been astoundingly great should retire.

I think I'd be happy if the Yankees signed him to some big deal, he came out in the 9th during the home opener, got the save in his usual Rivera-ian way, tipped his cap to the crowd, and then retired (and forgo the rest of his money).

There is no indication that Rivera's injury will have any lingering effects. I suspect that his mulling about retirement is just a bit of a negotiating ploy, although he's not even going to be asked to take a pay cut. Maybe he just goes 1 year with some sort of option beyond that.

Its not like it happened mid season, i fully expect mo to be ready to roll cpme sprimg for thos year and maybe one more.

As someone with an abiding dislike for the Yankees, I want to see Rivera come back and be good. He shouldn't go out from an injury sustained while shagging fly balls in the preseason. And he's been so amazing that he gets to choose what terms he goes out on.
