The Yankees are only a month and a half into Ichiro’s new contract, and it already looks like they will rue the day the two sides reached a deal. Well, perhaps the business side of the organization is pleased, but I digress. Ichiro is hitting .239/.280/.328 through 145 plate appearances, and finally broke a 22 at-bat hitless skid last night. At this point, it is hard to be optimistic about him going forward.

I would expect notable moves by the Yankees to occur later in the offseason. Right now most players are looking for big money in multi-year contracts, you can bet they'll be in on players more once the market settles down and free agents are more willing to accept one-year deals.

That should still be a capable lineup, and the Yankees should be an AL East contender. But if getting under the limit for 2014 will pay off in 2015 and thereafter, the short-term pain for long-term gain makes perfect sense. Were Mike Rizzo the Yankees' GM instead of Brian Cashman, he would do the same thing.

You know who David Adams is, but not Chris Dickerson?

David Adams is apparently the team's 2008 third-round pick and has a very good OBP in 125 games with Trenton.

Chris Dickerson has played in 258 MLB games. Apparently what the Yankees traded for him was a soon-to-retire Sergio Mitre. This was after the Reds mysteriously traded him for a soon-to-retire Jim Edmonds.

The Yankees will almost assuredly bring back Ichiro and Ibañez for RF and DH, and they already have an offer out to Youkilis. Pierzynski is too perfect of a fit not to happen as well, i suspect. I expect a lineup more like this:

RF Ichiro
SS Jeter
2B Cano
1B Teixeira
LF Granderson
3B Youkilis
DH Ibañez
C Pierzynski
CF Gardner

Right now the Yankees' front office looks completely dysfunctional. The owners are unwilling to use the one major advantage they've always had--money--to improve the team. The general manager looks dazed and confused, stunted by the owners and without a creative plan to improve the team. I know it's early in the off season, but right now the Yankees are re-living the winter of 1992.

I'm going to wait and see. They've lost Martin and Chavez this off-season. Maybe that says something definitive about the plan or lack of one or maybe it says nothing.

If the Yankees signed Youkilis and Pierzynski, my son would probably become a White Sox fan. Better to root for the team that let those guys walk than to root for those guys. Personally, I'd never consider anything that drastic, but I probably wouldn't bother to re-up my MLB.TV subscription.

The Yankees may have moved a step closer to signing Youkilis. The Indians have signed Mark Reynolds to play first base, with Lonnie Chisenhall playing third base. So unless there's another "mystery" team out there, Youkilis could be headed to NY.

Their starting third baseman is losing a half season to surgery and they neglect to even offer his backup $3M, one of the few in a market almost devoid of capable replacements. I think that says more about the Yankees willingness and ability to do deals this off-season than anything else.

I think the ###### will still somehow throw 150 innings of 105 ERA+, picking up 12 wins and helping the club win the goddamned AL East again before turning back into a pumpkin next season. That's what always seems to happen when the Yankees sign Nobody.

It was mentioned as a possibility by either Cashman or Girardi after the season, I don't recall which. I also expect it to happen.

Ronnier Mustelier? Age 27, but only because he arrived from Cuba at 26; in two minor-league yrs, 324/378/497, and he didn't really trail off in 89 games at AAA (303/359/455). Only 26 of his games were at 3B, but as a hitter he looks more major-league ready than Adams; so why isn't he the frontrunner for the job?
