Their starting third baseman is losing a half season to surgery and they neglect to even offer his backup $3M, one of the few in a market almost devoid of capable replacements. I think that says more about the Yankees willingness and ability to do deals this off-season than anything else.
It was mentioned as a possibility by either Cashman or Girardi after the season, I don't recall which. I also expect it to happen.
