Kind of strange phrasing there. Shouldn't he say "Mr. Torres was innocent"?
Doesn't need to. The defense has no obligation to claim, demonstrate or prove innocence.
But, it really helps you with the jury if you can credibly do so.
FWIW, Rusty Torres played more games with the Indians (230), Angels (178) & White Sox (106) than the Yankees (89). His only significant contribution to the Yankees was being part of the trade that brought Graig Nettles to NY.
