Read More...The Yankees just can’t catch up to all these injuries. Less than two weeks after he returned from a fractured right forearm, Curtis Granderson suffered a fractured fifth metacarpal (left hand) in his left hand when Cesar Ramos hit him with a pitch in the fifth inning. No word on a timetable for his return, but it’s same injury Alex Rodriguez had last season. He missed six weeks. Crud.
Granderson, 32, actually stayed in the game to run the bases before being removed the game after the ...

Great planning...I mean, yeah, there's not a freely available 40+ homerun hitter out there (what's Bonds doing right now?) over the off-season (and willing to take a part-time role)...but there were no equivalents to Rivera and Diaz out there? Ronnier Mustelier could be an interesting option as well...but again, you'd want a lefty to mix in.

and various other marginal players.
What's up with him? Haven't heard a thing all winter.
What is "an uninspiring list of available outfielders" Alex.
#8 - I wish the Angels could trade Trumbo to an unsuspecting team willing to give up value for him. Mark my words - Trumbo is going to be TEH SUCK this year.
This was my reaction too. There is a large segment of fans and writers out there that would have lost their minds if this happened in a WBC game but since it's a Spring Training game it's "oh what a shame."
Which is the right reaction. While I boo Granderson because of the uniform he's one of my favorite players in baseball. He always strikes me as a guy who loves playing the game and he's pretty fun to watch with a certain style all his own, distinctive stance, method of moving around, that make him interesting to me. I hope he fully recovers.
This.
It could also put them far enough behind that they actually become sellers at the deadline, which is desperately needed.
Unless Cano has non-Borasian demands for an extension, they should probably move him and Granderson for prospects. Throw in Kuroda and Hughes (if you're not going to extend him) and you could really get a head start on being good again.
And trade for what exactly? Gary Sanchez, Mason Wiliams and Slade Heathcott are all decent, but not elite prospects. Not much depth after that, and very little pitching. Plus, with all these one year deals, you figure the Yanks might want to hang onto what little minor league depth they have. Yankee Clapper is right, I don't think there is a huge priority on winning it all this year, so just try to tread water for a month, maybe Grandy gives you a spark, but this probably isn't a championship season with or without Curtis.
Whenever a guy goes down with an injury, his MO is always the same. "We'll try to answer the problem from within." Never mind if they don't have any answers from within, which they don't. Melky Mesa is not the answer. When your outfield depth is Diaz and Rivera, two players that nobody wanted, you're in big trouble.
Cashman has simply had an awful off season. No catcher, no outfield depth, no right-handed hitting DH, no plan for Nunez.
Well, Russell Martin was only willing to resign with the Yankees if they let him play shortstop.
Hafner doesn't have the range for DH.
I have visions of Eduardo Nunez out there
I was gonna go here too. Makes a lot of sense, especially if their defensive data looks like the stuff we see. Even if they want him longterm at backup IF, it's a lot easier (usually) to find a decent backup SS/2B/3B on the cheap. Haul Cairo or Soto out of retirement and call it a day.
He'd have more range than Jeter.
Theirs and the Mets' are going to be like Sosa and McGwire in '98.
What are the odds that the Mets OR Yankees OF (each) get more home runs than Sosa or McGwire did in 1998?
What are the odds that the Mets AND Yankees OF (combined) get more home runs than Sosa or McGwire did in 1998?
It's not even Easter yet. He may have given up hitters for Lent this year.
I'll concede some or all of these points to Bruce when the time comes, but let's wait until Opening Day to decide who had what kind of offseason.
A double post 25 minutes apart?
That's impressive.
I do get a kick out of the guys over the years who were pooh-poohing the ARod, Jeter, Tex deals on the grounds that if they were overpaying the Spanks always had more money to spend. Nice to see it catching up with them.
Laughed. Out. Loud.
I don't know what the record is, but the 1978 Astros have to come close. 24 total from Jose Cruz, Cesar Cedeno, Denny Wallling, Terry Puhl, and Wilbur Howard.
edit: they got only 21 in 1982.

See, this is sophisticated humor. The word "spanks" sounds like "Yanks", but it means getting your ass slapped. Hilarious!
