Eight or so years ago I saw a play called The Savior of Fenway, set in a bar in Quincy, MA where the regulars sat around and watched the Sox blow the 2003 ALCS. It was a play about four men watching sports, but it was really about American manhood, the hopes and expectations possible for someone with a very limited horizon, and what it means to "make it" and what that means to the people around you who aren't going to make it. It was very heartfelt, very well acted, and felt very true. It was heartbreaking and also ery funny at times. One of my favorite parts was when the young bartender who also plays college ball describes his workout regimin, and one of the regulars starts talking contemptuously about buff, metrosexual men. He sort of talks to himself, and then takes a step towards the audience to continue with his thoughts. The effect was of a Hamlet-style soliloquy but with the content being a lot of nasty things said about "six-pack underwear models". It was hilarious. The Savior of Fenway was a really excellent little play that so far as I can tell got a short run in New York and three or four weeks at the Cambrige YMCA, and then disappeared forever.

This play about the Yankees is probably going to make a ton of money and completely suck.

You must mean the one where Homer traded Marge to Mr. Burns for a lifetime supply of Lard Lad.

Thanks for that tip on The Savior of Fenway, Fernigal. I hadn't heard of the play, and need to go find a print copy and read it if I can.

Plays about the Yankees are not unheard of: Damn Yankees at least has them as the bad guys in the background, and there's a good one-act play called Lou Gehrig Did Not Die of Cancer that isn't really about them either, but uses a Yankee-fan context. Richard Greenberg's excellent Take Me Out is about a team called the New York Empires, thinly fictionalized versions of the Yankees.
