Giants sign first rounder Madison Baumgardner

• Illinois high school lefthander T.J. McFarland (Indians, fourth round), got $285,000. His slot was $189,000.

• Canadian prep righty Evan Hildenbrandt (Reds, sixth round), signed for $200,000. MLB recommends that players after the fifth round be capped at the slot for the last pick in the fifth round, which was $123,300 this year.
   104. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 15, 2007 at 05:07 PM (#2485965)
The Giants have signed No. 29 overall pick Wendell Fairley for $1 million, $10,000 above MLB’s slot recommendation of $990,000.

And I hear Aumont is about to sign.

So that leaves Moustakas now
   106. RoyalsRetro (AG#1F) Posted: August 15, 2007 at 08:22 PM (#2486227)
BA is reporting Andrew Brackman has signed with the Yanks.
   107. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: August 15, 2007 at 08:25 PM (#2486233)
For a ridiculous sum.
   108. Big Train Posted: August 15, 2007 at 08:51 PM (#2486268)
They are reporting 4.5 million. I am thinking that is just outlandish, rather than ridiculous.

I doubt he will play for the Yanks. the major league deal means they are going to trade him
   109. Big Train Posted: August 15, 2007 at 08:53 PM (#2486271)
Man, thats a dumb ####### deal, but I guess the thinking is they can stash him on the 60 day DL when he is out for two ####### years with elbow surgery.
   110. Big Train Posted: August 15, 2007 at 08:59 PM (#2486278)
Yankees draft, REALLY sucks unless they can sign Romine or Angelini
   111. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:04 PM (#2486289)
Thats a ridiculous contract for brackman. I don't know what the yankee scouts see in him. I watched him live, I watched him on TV, and he wasn't that impressive.

Leaves
Price ( signs probably )
Moustakas -- USC?
Vitters -- Rumours of a deal being done
Weiters -- signs probably. The O's can't afford to let him get away
Aumount/Dominguez/parker -- rumours of done deals..

Might be the standard 1 holdout from the first round
   112. Big Train Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:07 PM (#2486295)
Brackman will never throw a pitch in the Bronx
   113. J. Cross Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:13 PM (#2486302)
$4.5M? That's the guaranteed amount.

"the Yankees have signed him to a deal that could be worth up to $13 million when escalator clauses and team options are included."
   114. Mike Emeigh Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:24 PM (#2486309)
Aumont has signed. 2006 slot money.

   115. Shibal Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:41 PM (#2486334)
If KC doesn't offer Hochaver money to Moustakas, I'm going to be pissed.
   116. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:47 PM (#2486341)
Price signs, major league deal
   117. Keith Law Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:53 PM (#2486351)
You guys should credit where you get the info from.

Price to get $8.5M guaranteed from Devil Rays
   118. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: August 15, 2007 at 09:55 PM (#2486354)
Sorry about that, Keith. Was just bouncing between a few windows, and didn't bother to link it.
   119. Keith Law Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:00 PM (#2486356)
No prob, wasn't referring to you specifically, although I see now that it looks like I was.

SJ, I reported last night that they're going to sign Angelini, and BA has previously written that they're going to sign Romine.
   120. Chris Needham Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:00 PM (#2486359)
Yeah, because ESPN never gets enough credit for stories they "break." ;)

Baseball Primer has learned...
   121. Chris Needham Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:03 PM (#2486362)
(Not to imply that you didn't break this; just that there's a certain amount of irony involved)
   122. Shibal Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:06 PM (#2486365)
The more we link Keith, the less likely ESPN will replace him with a Steve Phillips type expert.
   123. Shibal Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:07 PM (#2486366)
Keith, any word on the Royals? Are they still negotiating, or have they thrown in the towel?
   124. Keith Law Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:22 PM (#2486386)
Sounds like the two sides aren't close. The Royals took Moustakas believing that he was signable at a certain number, and that turned out to be wrong. The gap is seven figures.

Next year, the #3 pick they get as a result will end up being a Moskos-type, pre draft deal - I'm convinced of it. Since they get no compensation for the pick, they have every incentive to make it.
   126. Teheran's Uranium Enriched Missiles Posted: August 15, 2007 at 10:28 PM (#2486391)
Even if Moustakas has 2-3 awesome years in college, how much higher is he going to get picked. Is it worth it for him to take that risk over a million, when he is probably getting abt 4 mil guaranteed?
   127. Big Train Posted: August 15, 2007 at 11:08 PM (#2486418)
SJ, I reported last night that they're going to sign Angelini, and BA has previously written that they're going to sign Romine.

Yeah, sorry Keith. there have been rumors of the imminent Angelini signing since June. So I will wait until it is official. Not that I don't trust you, you seem like a nice guy.

I had not heard they were going to sign Romine.

BTW, I appreciate you hanging out here with the littles.

Why is everyone so down on New York's draft?
   131. Keith Law Posted: August 16, 2007 at 02:58 AM (#2486900)
We're posting all of our updates in one article (except Price, he got his own story):

ESPN draft signings roundup

Anyway, I just reported that Arizona has signed Jarrod Parker. I assume Levski's already halfway through a bottle of champagne.
   132. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:02 AM (#2486910)
I'm hearing Austin Bailey and Drake Britton to the Sox.
   133. JC in DC Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:05 AM (#2486915)
Keith:

I was about to knock you a bit for that Yankees blurb, as the segue to Sanchez seemed a bit off. Then I noticed Olney had written it. So, you can knock him for me. It makes it seem like Sanchez was a high risk draft pick when, as you know, he was acquired in a deal.
   134. JPWF13 Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:07 AM (#2486917)
They are reporting 4.5 million. I am thinking that is just outlandish, rather than ridiculous.

I doubt he will play for the Yanks. the major league deal means

that they didn't learn when they signed Dotel to a one year deal while rehabbing from TJ surgery.
did Brackman have ANY leverage???????
   135. PASTE is not impressed by Albert Pujols (Zeth) Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:08 AM (#2486919)
When you're the Yankees, you just sign the guy. I have my doubts they spend a lot of time arguing with their draft picks over money. Helps them maintain a good relationship with agents, too, I imagine.
   136. Keith Law Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:31 AM (#2486976)
Yes, the Sox have signed Bailey (I mentioned that one last night) and Britton (happened today).

Great news. Thanks, Keith. I saw J Mayo reported it on his blog as well.

I wish I had a bottle of champagne right now. Sadly, I am all out of alcohol tonight.

Man, I can't wait until an ESPN writer mocks me here. I better get a bit more vituperative on Mets and Red Sox threads... shouldn't be too hard.
   139. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:38 AM (#2486991)
Just use words like "vituperative" more. It'll come.
   140. Social media assassin (Templeusox) Posted: August 16, 2007 at 03:39 AM (#2486993)
There's some word about Jaren Matthews to the Sox.

Moustakas signs per BA.

McGeary signs per BA.

No details.

Vitters signed, too, per WGN (they're going to interview him shortly)

From the Tribune, Cub's corporate owner/mouthpiece:

The Cubs took it down to the wire in their quest to sign first-round draft pick Josh Vitters, the high school standout who was preparing to go to Arizona State if he didn't sign by Wednesday's 11 p.m. deadline.

"We'll get 'er done," scouting director Tim Wilken said late Wednesday afternoon.

Apparently this is a Beano Cook reference by Wilken.

How far apart were the Orioles with Wieters? If KC can get it done ...

TUSox, if you started working for ESPN then my dream will become reality! You know you've already sent your resume via in-site message to KL.

"They got the deal done," said Orioles scouting director Joe Jordan. "You can tell the City of Baltimore that the old evil owner stepped up and took care of things tonight. We had to fight to the end."

That's an actual quote? Awesome.

I'd love to see Damon Oppenheimer quoted saying the senile drooling old fool stepped up and took care of things in reference to the Brackman deal.

Double awesomes there for sure.

Wieters Signs!

This may be the first time I've praised Peter or the FO in over ten years. But bravo, and thank you. This has been a good day.

It's been a great day, and a great week. 4 of 6 from the evil empires, and the old evil owner brings home Wieters.

I sure am glad the A's drafted a bunch of guys who were only going to sign for over slot money and then didn't sign any of them because they didn't want to go over slot. Surely those picks couldn't be put to better use.

I feel your pain on Gary Brown, but you ended up with a lot of good prospects anyway. If you want to trade with my team, please feel free...

Sam Demel will be a nice reliever in a year or two.
