Top 25 MLB free agents of 2017 | MLB.com

Boras is selling that Wieters will be a much better player in his 30s that his 20s, and should be paid as such. If you can’t sell reality, sell the dream.

19. Matt Wieters, C, Orioles
2017 WAR projection: 1.1
2017 age: 31
The switch-hitter accepted Baltimore’s qualifying offer last offseason but then put together a fairly disappointing 2016. Wieters’ wRC+ of 88 ranked 14th out of 16 catchers with at least 400 plate appearances.

Falvey: Twins’ goal is building ‘a sustainable, championship-caliber team’ - StarTribune.com

How will they be better than other front offices?

Falvey and Levine, who both got five-year contracts, were introduced at a news conference later Monday morning. The two are part of the wave of baseball executives who place an emphasis on analytics, but Falvey said, “We will have a commitment to understanding metrics but we’ll always be making human decisions.”

Said Levine: “In the healthiest decisionmaking cycles, analytics plays a meaningful role but not a decisive role … [analytics] will ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-7-2016

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, November 7, 1916:

A letter written in the home of Joe Tinker in Chicago and reaching [Philadelphia yesterday], told that Frank Chance, the veteran manager, had been appointed leader of the Cubs to succeed Tinker. The letter was received by Wade Powers, a local fan, from his mother, Mrs. J.A. Powers, who left Philadelphia last week to visit the Tinker household. Mrs. Powers is a sister of the mother-in-law of Tinker…

When incredulity was expressed, Mr. Powers said: “You ...

MLB Awards Season, Pt 2: The Logic Escapes Me

The argument, made by several chroniclers of the game, is that there was no standout performance by a starting pitcher in the AL this year, opening the door for a standout reliever to claim the prize. The voters are literally saying “since we can’t pick between the two best pitchers in the league, we’ll give it to a third pitcher who wasn’t as good.”

In what universe does it make sense to penalize a pitcher for being the best, but only the best by a little bit? Michael Phelps gets the gold ...

OTP 2016 November 7: How baseball bridged the political divide

A World Series game seven for the ages offered some rare relief from the most bitter presidential election in recent memory.
The Chicago Cubs, in carrying off their first title since 1908 when Theodore Roosevelt was president, finally proved that no curse is forever and offered a few moments of hope fulfilled and optimism — two qualities badly lacking from this grimmest of presidential races.

5 Mets options to replace Cespedes: Trade for McCutchen? | New York Post

He is an option.

Carlos Gomez: The former Mets outfielder, who nearly returned in 2015 at the trade deadline before the club acquired Cespedes, had a resurgence with the Rangers over the final two months of the season after a brutal first half with Houston. Gomez hit 13 homers in 118 games and is still a threat on the bases (18 stolen bases), but he may have lost a step defensively.

Bud Black reaches agreement with Colorado Rockies to become new manager

“This is a tough place, a fun place and a not-so-fun place to play all wrapped into one. No lead feels safe,” Black said about Coors Field during his last season with the Padres. “And no lead feels insurmountable when you are trying to attack. You always feel good about your ability to come back.”

Benevolence or stupidity? Cubs pay Hammels to go away

For a paltry 12 million, the Cubs could have had a really good long man/spot starte; or they could have signed and traded him. But they paid 2 million to let him walk.  Hammels stands to make millions from this move as he becomes one of the best starters on the market.

Mets needs to lock up Cespedes long-term — no matter the price - NY Daily News

Overpaying is great short-sighted thinking.

Or maybe at that point he and the Wilpons simply dig deep to keep Cespedes, realizing that sometimes overpaying for the right player is the price a New York franchise should be willing to pay for trying to win a championship.

As Alderson begins his seventh year as GM, the Mets are at that point. I’m convinced he knows it.

But we’ll see if he delivers on it.

Cubs Joe Maddon’s style unique, unprecedented | MLB.com

Joe Maddon was in charge of the Angels’ instructional league program one fall three decades ago when he heard Gene Mauch‘s gravelly voice behind him.

“I don’t know how you’re doing it, son,” Mauch said. “But you’ve created a great environment here.”

To this day, Maddon considers it maybe the greatest compliment he has ever received, because Mauch was a legendary tough guy—taciturn, demanding and frugal with praise. He also had one of the greatest baseball minds ever, someone who’d studied the ...

The Cubs may be just getting started, as they’re exceptionally well-built for the long haul. First baseman Anthony Rizzo is locked into a very affordable deal that includes options for 2020 and ‘21, second baseman/leftfielder Ben Zobrist and rightfielder Jason Heyward are on board via more expensive ones, ...

Why The Union Should Push Back At International Changes | BaseballAmerica.com

Ben Badler makes the case against raising the international minimum signing age to 18.

There will still be some Latin American players who can get to the majors at 21 and hit free agency still at their traditional peak years, but raising the signing age from 16 to 18 reduces the number of them who will. That hurts players in the union—and not just Latin American players. While international amateur players aren’t in the union, the players’ association would be smart to push back against ...

Prospecting on the Beautiful Island

As the game of baseball continues to globalize, major league organizations are looking beyond the prospect hotbeds in the Americas. For many organizations, this includes scouting in Taiwan, which 16th-century Portuguese sailors dubbed Formosa, “The Beautiful Island,” owing to its natural fusion of green fields, forest ranges, mountain tops and water bodies.
The San Diego Padres, for example, recently signed Taiwanese pitcher Wen-Hua Sung, who turned 20 in September. Sung, whom the local ...

Arizona Diamondbacks pick Torey Lovullo as manager

The usually reliable John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports is reporting that the team will name Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo as the new manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks. While there has not yet been an official announcement, the choice has since been confirmed by others, including Nick Piecoro and Jon Heyman, so it appears to be close to a done deal. Lovullo will become the 10th manager in team history.

This is no great shock: as soon as Red Sox GM Mike Hazen was appointed to the ...

Is the Postseason Becoming Too Different?

Or, if we want to look at it another way, relievers threw 43% of all the postseason innings this year. That’s up from 39% a year ago, and over the last five years, it had held pretty steady between 35-40%, right in the same range as the 63%/37% split we see during the regular season. It certainly feels like this year is the start of a shift, and teams are going to continue to push their bullpen usage in October, especially given how well it worked this year.

But that brings up a bit of a ...

Why Aren’t There More Gay Baseball Players?

Spoiler alert! There’s no single great answer to that question. Complex spoke to every living professional baseball player who’s come out publicly: Conroy and Denson, plus four others who came out after retiring, and all of them had somewhat different takes.

“I think people are misguided in thinking that it’s connected,” says Billy Bean, the one-time major leaguer who came out four years after his pro career ended and wrote a book about everything, now serving as Major League ...

Ed Barrow, president of the International league, in speaking of the decline of interest in baseball…declares that interest in the game could be greatly revived by requiring the visiting players to travel to the park via busses and fully dressed in their uniforms. He deplores the many automobiles and the large bank accounts that players have nowadays, and attributes much of the lack of interest in baseball to too ...

The Cubs Just Ended Baseball’s Analytics War

It’s never, ever been about being right. It’s always about being better. It’s tough to get better if you believe you have all the answers. By questioning everything, including what you believe to be true, you remain open to change and improvement. Theo has always gotten this.

GM Dick Williams in control of Reds operations | reds.com

The reliever market gets more expensive every day.

“The bullpen will be interesting to see how it comes together,” Williams said. “The market is going to make it challenging. There is not a ton of options available, and there are a lot of teams talking about needing bullpen help right now. We just have to be careful that we don’t get swept up in a market that is overheated. We’ll monitor that market and try to find value.”
Creative bullpen management was in focus throughout the postseason, with ...
