Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-15-2016

Pittsburgh Press, April 15, 1916:

The Ohio Penitentiary Baseball league opened its 1916 season in the prison grounds [in Columbus] today. No. 1 team played No. 2. The members of both squads, though they frequently expressed the belief that it would put them in better form, were deprived of the customary southern training trip. Warden Thomas said today, however, that both teams are fast. The convict players have new uniforms—baseball uniforms, that is—and equipment, this year.

It’s a good league, ...

Ex-trainer says Pablo Sandoval needs baby sitter to control weight | Boston Herald

Did the Red Sox research him at all before signing him?

“I care about him greatly,” said Banning, who lost touch with Sandoval after the 2011-12 offseason. “But it’s a tough love. He needs to be smart enough to say there’s a problem. It’s like the alcoholic that won’t admit he’s an alcoholic: well, you can’t address that you’re an alcoholic if you don’t ever admit there’s a problem. He’s got to address that.

“He’s proven to me and shown consistently that he’s got ...

No. 1 MLB draft prospect Jason Groome ruled ineligible, stats erased

Barnegat High School senior left-handed pitcher Jason Groome, the No. 1 overall prospect for June’s Major League Baseball draft, has been ruled ineligible by the state’s governing body for high school athletics for violating the state’s transfer rule, NJ Advance Media has learned.

Barnegat must forfeit victories in which Groome played this season and his statistics over the past two weeks will be erased, including the 19 strikeouts he racked up during a no-hitter he threw against ...

Sling adds regional Fox Sports networks, including MLB games

Sling adds Fox networks, including regional Fox Sports networks, to their service offerings.  They are part of a new “beta multi-stream” service that appears to be available separately from their base plan for $20 per month.  Probably the cheapest way to (legally) get in-market baseball?

Hey Bill: Dick Allen, Ty Cobb, reputations

Allen was very charming, but he was a manipulator.  He had a genius for dividing people, and for picking petty quarrels in which the other person was always the bad guy.  Exactly one-half of his teammates loved him.  He was an alcoholic, and alcoholics are the greatest manipulators in the world; that’s why they make great managers.  Starting nine. . .well, Allen, Hornsby, Albert Belle, Joe Medwick.  Carl Mays.  Probably shouldn’t spend too much time with it; we all have our demons.  I ...

Drellich: Red Sox won’t be able to hide Pablo Sandoval for long | Boston Herald

The Red Sox don’t have many options. Right now, Shaw is a better player than Sandoval was before he went off the rails. So, even if Sandoval finds workout religion, how does the team find playing time to rebuild his value enough to get another team to take on even a small portion of his contract?

Chip Hale upset with Rick Honeycutt | MLB.com

He was probably offended by their new uniforms.

D-backs manager Chip Hale wasn’t sure what Rick Honeycutt was yelling towards the Arizona dugout after Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, but the very fact that the Dodgers’ pitching coach was doing so angered Hale.

The number of tools to help players today really is amazing

While wary of oversimplifying what can be an extremely complex process, Tewksbary stresses three elements: Swing plane, depth of swing, and path of swing. A batter’s goal: A launch angle of 10 to 15 degrees, which he believes is ideal for making hard contact and elevating the ball.

With the advent of Statcast, major leaguers are able to easily track exit velocity and launch angle, providing immediate validation.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-14-2016

Hugh Fullerton via the Richmond Times-Dispatch, April 14, 1916:

“Center Fieldin’ Ain’t No Puddin’” is the title of a song Artie Hoffman used to sing. Neither is umpiring any pastry, but they are the whole dessert compared with managing a ball club. I used to feel sorry for the mother of nine growing boys or a teacher in a parential school until I found out what a baseball manager is up against.

I was flabbergasted to learn that “Center Fieldin’ Ain’t No Puddin’” is an actual song. (Or at least a ...

MLB Scores Important Victory in Fan-Safety Lawsuit | FanGraphs Baseball

I don’t have a problem with extending the netting further away from home plate. Extending it all the way to the foul poles seems a little excessive.

Consequently, even if the plaintiffs were to prevail against the five remaining defendant-teams, the most they could hope to obtain would be a court order requiring MLB’s five California franchises to extend protective netting from foul-pole-to-foul-pole in each of their stadiums. Thus, Friday’s ruling dashes the Payne plaintiffs’ hopes of ...

Most of us are missing the point on Vin Scully – HardballTalk

Scully still does his research. Typically he doesn’t repeat information or stories about a player during a game. He has something new to say each AB. Contrast that with a lot of other announcers. Nothing grates on me more than hearing an announcer make the same comment on a player multiple times in a game. Take a spring game for example. I was watching the Dodgers. Each time Cody Bellinger made a play or came to bat the announcer repeated that his father was former Yankee Clay Bellinger. What ...

Look at Cubs’ underground lair reveals lavish new digs

Celebration room with strobe lights and disco ball?  Celebration room with strobe lights and disco ball.

The Cubs dug deep — 40 feet or thereabouts — for their new underground digs at Wrigley Field.

They wouldn’t reveal, however, how deep Chairman Tom Ricketts dug into the club’s pockets to fund the team’s new 30,000-square-foot clubhouse project that features a Las Vegas-like players lounge, hyperbaric chambers, a 3,800-square-foot training room, new weight room and rehab facilities.

Red Sox must turn to Christian Vazquez to help struggling pitchers - Boston Red Sox Blog- ESPN

Swihart isn’t throwing those fat pitches in the middle of the plate. Replacing him behind the dish for missing a pop up is just silly. What’s even more silly is suggesting they should carry a third catcher because their “roster is imperfect anyway”.

During the final week of spring training, Farrell said the Red Sox wouldn’t rule out carrying three catchers. It’s hardly an ideal scenario, but as long as third baseman Pablo Sandoval is coming off the bench, the Sox’s roster is imperfect anyway. ...

Adam LaRoche goes deep on his decision to walk

So here’s the deal: You need to forget everything you think you know about professional athletes. Adam LaRoche is different. He walked into the clubhouse for the first time every spring and greeted new teammates by saying, “Oh, hey, I didn’t know we signed you.” During spring training in 2010, with the Diamondbacks, he and his family pulled a trailer to Tucson, and he rode a bicycle from the campground to the ballpark every day. He’s one of the stars of the reality TV show Buck Commander, in ...

Billy Hamilton recorded the fastest home run trot in Statcast history

Statcast measured the amble at 16.2 seconds—the quickest for an over-the-wall homer in the tracking system’s history.

Hamilton also had the fastest trot last season at 16.5 seconds. Although, that one was from the left side and this one was from the right, so, um, major bonus points.
