All the debates about Puig have gotten a reality check. | Sports on Earth

All of us who have played baseball competitively know that some players are more difficult to play with than others. Our willingness to tolerate the more difficult personalities is balanced by how well the player performs and how much of an effort we see him putting into playing well. If the player is killing it on the field and helping our team win, we’ll tolerate much more of all the other stuff. If the player’s performance, however, isn’t what we expect, it doesn’t take very long to see him ...

The Mets place Yoenis Cespedes on the DL amid golf controversy | FOX Sports

On MLB Radio they were talking about him playing five hours of golf on a game day while he’s troubled by his calf problem. If true, I can see why the Mets organization and his teammates would be bothered.

If Cespedes wouldn’t pull the plug on his golf hobby, should the Mets have done so? That’s a question the New York Post’s Mike Vaccaro asked:

You can blame Cespedes for bad judgment without blaming his hobby on complicating his recovery. These are not mutually exclusive things. And now ...

IOC approves five sports for Tokyo, including baseball/softball

Great, now Olympic venues will have to blow more money building a baseball stadium which will never get used again.

“We have a real vision around what these new sports will add to the mix for Tokyo 2020, and it’s a vision that isn’t just limited to these five sports but what we want the Olympic program to do, what we want sport to be in the future of the Olympic Games,” said Kit McConnell, the IOC’s sports director. “In many ways, the sports that have come in signal a vision for how ...

Salazar to DL with Elbow Inflammation

the Cleveland Indians have placed starting pitcher Danny Salazar on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Newest member of the Indians, outfielder Brandon Guyer, assumed his spot on the 25-man roster.

Salazar has been dealing with discomfort in his throwing arm for several weeks. It was enough of an issue that he skipped making an appearance in his first All-Star Game to allow his body more time to rest.

Hopefully it’s nothing, but these situations always make fans nervous. ...Read More...

Australian Baseball League to go ahead in 2016, without financial support of Major League Baseball

THE Australian Baseball League will go ahead this season but its future remains in limbo after Major League Baseball ended its lucrative backing of the national competition.

MLB had funded 75 per cent of the loss-making league since in 2010 with Baseball Australia holding the other 25 per cent stake.

After a review of its international operations last year MLB decided to terminate its ownership of the ABL and redirect funds to the development of the sport in Australia.

This includes a ...

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw moved to 60-day DL

DENVER—Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw, sidelined since late June with a herniated disk in his back, was moved to the 60-day disabled list on Wednesday.

That means the 28-year-old won’t be able to return until Aug. 27, at the earliest.

Deadspin: The Battle Over The Rangers’ Ballpark Scam Has Officially Begun

Gee, ya think?

The proposed stadium deal is pure blackmail. When the $1 billion stadium was announced, only $500 million of it was promised to come from the team itself. Why would the city of Arlington shell out half a billion dollars? Why would it spend anything? Because, even without having to say it, the implication — which is probably only a bluff — is that the Rangers will leave Arlington without a new, publicly funded ballpark to replace their perfectly fine one. The PAC formed to ...

Trevor Story, probably done for regular season, placed on 15-day disabled list – The Denver Post

This stinks…and I don’t even have him on any of my fantasy teams.

But make no mistake: The Rockies, hoping to turn this recent summer surge into a fall to remember, felt subdued at the outset of a critical homestand. The news that star rookie shortstop Trevor Story probably is done for the season after suffering a tear to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb dealt a blow.

“It’s terrible to hear that,” Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado said. “It hurts my heart for him. ...

Alex Rodriguez’s Days as a Yankee May Be Numbered - WSJ

At this point, why not keep him? He doesn’t have to play every day.

Roster expansion is 28 days away. If the team can build any value by playing him, even if they only save a million or two, it’s still better than buying him out now.

All of this has raised speculation that the Yankees could release Rodriguez, who remains under contract in 2017 for another $20 million. At this point, the speculation hasn’t evolved into anything resembling a plan: In an interview with ESPN Radio on Tuesday, ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 3, 1916:

The sudden disappearance of Harold Isroff, aged 12, son of Mrs. Anna Isroff, was solved when the lad was found in the American League baseball park, Cleveland, after relatives [in Youngstown] had become frantic. He is a good ball player and said he wanted to see Tris Speaker play, as he was tired of playing “one ol’ cat.”

Okay, maybe he shouldn’t have done things that way, but it’s tough to get upset at a kid for wanting to watch Tris Speaker. ...Read More...

Dodgers Dysfunction: Selling Low On Yasiel Puig Is Malpractice (UPDATE) - Forbes

How can the writer make this claim? He can have his own opinion of what he things about Puig but he has no idea of the opinion of GMs. FYI, a player’s reputation has an impact on his value. This is particularly true when the player is not playing well.

But I am not willing to stipulate that Puig has lost all his trade value. This business of comparing a player with his former self only goes so far, and it’s intellectually lazy. Puig, right now, today, is a considerably better player than Scott ...

Yasiel Puig’s time with Los Angeles Dodgers always seemed destined to end badly - LA Times

Hernandez’s zinger could have been worse. He could have compared Zaidi to LA Times sports columnists. Those guys, phew, they aren’t that bright.

While Zaidi was speaking, Fox Sports posted a story online about how Puig departed Dodger Stadium in a huff after being told he would be traded or demoted.

“I’m not going to comment on that,” Zaidi said. “We have an off day today. Anything further, we’ll address and comment on tomorrow.”

Zaidi has a doctorate in behavioral economics from ...

Dodgers leave Yasiel Puig behind as they head to Colorado | FOX Sports

UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal updated his piece and apologized for getting the report wrong later last night.

Puig’s agent, Adam Katz, and Dodgers officials said that my initial report — that Puig stormed off after arriving at Dodger Stadium and being given the news — was inaccurate.

“I’m told he never went to the park,” Katz said. “The club informed me and the player understood clearly that they were making every effort to trade him and that if they were unable to come to terms with ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-2-2016

Toledo News-Bee, August 2, 1916:

The secret of the Browns’ winning streak in spite of the heat is out. It’s hot hotels. They deserted them and went to the ball park where they slept nights under tents while their opponents spent hot sleepless nights in downtown hotels.

Air conditioning is so ubiquitous in 2016 that I guess I never realized this would have been an issue back then.

Angels deal Hector Santiago, Joe Smith, add veteran Ricky Nolasco, prospect Alex Meyer - The Orange County Register

Keeping hope alive!

Billy Eppler looked at the emptiness of the Angels farm system and knew he couldn’t take the safe route.

When he made the surprising swap of Hector Santiago to the Minnesota Twins on Monday, it was with the idea that if he wanted Alex Meyer – once one of the top pitching prospects in the sport—he had to take Ricky Nolasco.

“These are opportunities we have to seize,” Eppler said Monday. “Everyone documented the situation with our farm system. So let’s grab a guy ...
