MLB: Braves fire GM Frank Wren; John Hart to take over interim position

Nobody is surprised.

ATLANTA—Nearing the end of their most disappointing season in more than two decades, the Braves have decided to begin altering the organization’s culture by relieving general manager Frank Wren of his duties. Wren learned of his termination on Monday morning.

John Hart, former GM of the Indians and Rangers who is one of Braves president John Schuerholz’s closest friends, was named interim GM, but he has made it known that he enjoys his work as a MLB Network analyst ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 9-22-2014

Milwaukee Sentinel, September 22, 1914:

George Stallings, manager of the Braves, is no neutral. During the series between the Braves and the Cardinals Charlie Schmidt, Boston’s big first baseman, made a fearfully stupid play. Stallings, fuming on the bench, blurted out: “I ought to fine that man a hundred dollars.”

Nobody made any reply, but after a few seconds of silence the manager thought better of his remark.

“I was wrong,” he confessed. “I ought not to fine him, but I ought to fine myself ...

Calcaterra | The Padres are going to keep Bud Black as their manager for 2015

The Padres are not, historically speaking, quick to change managers. Bruce Bochy preceded Black and held the job for 12 years. Black is finishing his eighth year as Padres manager. None of Black’s years have ended with a playoff appearance, however, and he’s 613-676 at the helm. Though, to be fair the Padres have very rarely given him a lot to work with.

Corey Kluber strikes out 14 in second straight start

Corey Kluber and the Indians did what they had to do Sunday at Target Field.

Kluber struck out 14 for the second consecutive game and the reborn offense recorded 14 hits in a 7-2 victory over the Twins. The Indians, who entered Sunday trailing Kansas City for the second AL wild-card spot by 3½ games, return home for the final seven games of the season.

The final homestand starts with a four-game series against the Royals.

Stephen Strasburg pitching like the Nationals’ Game 1 starter

Stephen Strasburg is not quite a finished product yet, but the past month has revealed the contours of what he will look like when he is. Strasburg has selected the right pitches, located them where he wants and thrown with wicked velocity and vicious movement. In the face of arduous situations, he has stayed cool in the saddle. Whatever the Nationals envisioned for Strasburg when they drafted him first overall in 2009, that is how he’s pitched for the past month.

Philly Sports: Chico Ruiz’s dash for home began the 1964 Phillies’ unraveling

50 years ago today, the Phillies began their 10 game losing streak to go from 6.5 up with 12 games left to 2.5 down with 2 games left (Cards had 3 left).  For my 13 year old self, it was a big of a heart break as my 7th grade girl friend breaking up with me.  I got over the Phillies’ swoon during the 2008 parade; I felt the weight of 1964 just lift away from my body.  Some of my contemporaries still suffer the torment.

This story is actually about Chico Ruiz and his sad and early demise.

Cameron: The Stealth MVP Candidacy of Hunter Pence

But while using win probability goes a little too far for my tastes in determining a player’s contribution to a win — the walk-off in the ninth was only possible because of the runs scored earlier — I’m personally okay with giving hitters credit for distributing their hits into on base/RISP situations. RE24 isn’t giving them sole credit for the value of those runs like RBIs does, and it takes into account the opportunities they were given. Pence has been exceptionally good with the ...

Royals encounter problem with online sale of playoff tickets

Fans would be given an opportunity to purchase tickets only to have the system time out, their credit card supposedly not validated or just completely get an error message. Some fans watch prime seats time out due to the errors.

And some fans who got error messages still saw pending transactions on their credit cards.

KCTV5 digital content manager DeAnn Smith has two pending transactions on her credit card sales, but wasn’t able to successfully buy tickets. But Tickets.com, which handles ...

Lindbergh: Dellin Betances’s Season & Bullpen Strategy

Dellin goes electric?

Despite being a setup man with only one save on the season, Betances has been lights-out enough to lead the majors in WPA — the first time a setup man has done so since Tyler Clippard in 2011. On the post-’88 leaderboard, though, the closers rise to the top, and Betances has to settle for a spot just inside the top 60.

The front office has waited eight years for this. The owner has waited 20. The fans have waited almost three decades without a playoff appearance, a generation of rooters exposed only to slapstick performances and 90-loss campaigns, a group wracked by anxiety during the final weeks of this season.

With one triumphant weekend in their glistening stadium, the Royals can, at last, reward this city and this region for their faith

C.J. Edwards: The legend of the String Bean Slinger

This is from a few days back, but a great read on the Cubs’ top pitching prospect.

You cannot help but notice. His Mid-Carolina High coach first saw it. So, too, did the Spartanburg Methodist assistant coach who later hooked on with the Texas Rangers and scouted him in bush league games near Newberry. All along the way, his minor-league coaches shook their heads in disbelief. Once, in major league camp, Josh Hamilton, upon seeing him shirtless, questioned if the Rangers were properly feeding ...

Toledo News-Bee, September 19, 1914:

Bert Briggs, who at two stages of his career was with the Chicago Cubs, never kicked on a ball or strike…He might shake his head and look sad, but he never kicked. That was because the first day he broke in as a National league pitcher Tim Hurst was umpiring.

The first batter came up and Briggs sent a fast ball whizzing through the heart of the plate, waist high. As the ball thudded into the catcher’s mitt Briggs yelled: “How’s that?”

Hurst walked down ...

Athletics out of top wild-card spot, Texas sweeps

The latest loss to the team with the worst record in the majors dropped the A’s a half-game behind idle Kansas City for the first wild-spot slot. Oakland owned the best record in the big leagues as recently as Aug. 15.

The Phillies are up next which might be comforting if they had not just watched the Rangers eat their lunch.

Royals/Tigers fans have to praying the A’s can right the ship.  A one game playoff against King Felix is a tall order.

At a press conference today, Washington offered the tiniest sliver of explanation—and a big red flag that something worse is hanging over his head.

“I made a mistake, and I’m embarrassed more than I’ve ever been in my life,” said Washington, who was accompanied by his wife Geraldine.

“When you put yourself in situations, you own it. Those are the type of things my wife always says to me, I was not true to my wife after 42 years, I broke that trust.

“I’m here today to own ...

The Washington Nationals became the first team to clinch their division this season…. Throughout the 2014 campaign, the Nats have conjured late-inning heroics and convincing blowouts alike while building the best record in the National League, and at 87-64, they’ve still got a shot at matching the 98-win 2012 Nationals for the best record in franchise history.1

That’s a damn miracle, considering that just five years ago this ...

It’s quite the turnaround for Angels and General Manager Jerry Dipoto

“Last year was not a great year. From a roster-building standpoint, I made a lot of mistakes. From a quality-of-product-on-the-field standpoint, the first five months of the season were awful.”

That the Angels emerged as the team with the best record in the major leagues this season — and that Moreno picked up Dipoto’s 2015 option two months ago — is yet another reminder to ignore the headlines at the winter meetings. Winning the winter wins you nothing.

The inspiring story of how ...
