Veterans committee should review players separately for Hall of Fame

What this leads to are ballots with inner circle managers, executives and umpires competing for consideration with players passed over by the BBWAA — generally second and third-tier candidates.

Under this arrangement, it might be awhile before the veterans committee enshrines another living player. If the Hall of Fame wants the committee to stay true to the reason it was created — considering overlooked players — Cooperstown might want to consider returning to having the committee vote ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-14-2016

Pittsburgh Press, December 14, 1916:

Inability of any amateur catcher to hold Charley Febris, a 17-year-old Ripley, O., boy, has forced him into the majors and he has signed with the Cincinnati Reds.

In his last amateur ball game Febris struck out 19 batsmen, but his steam was so great, it is reported in Ripley, the catcher couldn’t hold the boy’s delivery, but only knocked down the balls and got 19 assists, a world’s record, by throwing the runners out at first.

It’s hard to know how good the ...

Competitive Balance picks set for MLB Draft | MLB.com

The Competitive Balance Rounds are no longer determined via lottery. Instead, all teams that fall in the bottom 10 in revenue and bottom 10 in market size will get a pick in Round A, after the first round, or Round B, following the second round. Using a formula that takes revenue and winning percentage into account, six teams were awarded Round A picks, with eight teams getting picks in Comp Round B. The groups of teams will switch in 2018 (meaning there will be eight Comp Round A picks, six in ...

Philadelphia Evening Ledger, December 13, 1916:

FRED MITCHELL SIGNS WITH CUBS WHEN CHANCE DEMANDS MERE $25,000 ANNUAL SALARY

From the time Mitchell agreed to [Cubs owner Charles] Weeghman’s offer [to manage the team], George Stallings, manager of the Boston Braves, with which club Mitchell has been a power in the role of coach for several years, hounded the Chicago magnate and showered him with impossible demands. Outfielder Cy Williams, and a goodly sum, in addition, is what Stallings asked ...

Here’s why the future Dodgers are downright scary

One problem the Dodgers will have going forward is they won’t be able to outspend people on the international market. In the draft, they’ll be working with lower draft positions.

If I were them, I’d invest in backend people. Get the best scouts. Get the best development people. Outspend everybody on analytics. Pour your money into medicine and family care. Of course, from what I’ve read, they are already doing a pretty good job at all that, so I’m not sure if they’ll be able to press an ...

New MLB Hazing Policy Bans Dressing As Women

End of an era:

That baseball hazing ritual of dressing up rookies as Wonder Woman, Hooters Girls and Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders is now banned. Major League Baseball created an Anti-Hazing and Anti-Bullying Policy that covers the practice. As part of the sport’s new labor deal, set to be ratified by both sides on Tuesday, the players’ union agreed not to contest it.

The policy, obtained by The Associated Press, prohibits “requiring, coercing or encouraging” players from “dressing up as women or ...

Pirates pitcher Tyler Glasnow eager for 2017 opportunity | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Recently, the Pirates’ top pitching prospect, Tyler Glasnow, heard something pretty funny. He was at bowling event for Pirates Charities, and one fan piped up with this wisecrack, something about how it would be cool if Glasnow could throw strikes on the baseball field, too.

“Touche,” Glasnow said, laughing, as he retold the story Sunday. “It’s all right.”

OTP: 12 December 2016: Washington Legislators Propose Bill to Allow Guns in Sports Stadiums

The bill aims to shoot down the strict no-gun policies at stadiums like Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field, which are privately owned. The stadiums are home to the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks.

The legislation would keep private owners from banning guns at public spaces, and allow people with proper license to carry firearms to be at the sporting venues with their weapons.

Gotta offer the amenities to keep Safeco the #6 fan experience in MLB.

Silverman: Sale, Price, Porcello best Big 3 for now, but pale historically | Boston Herald

The Red Sox trio was pretty good last year. They aren’t as good as other recent trios for other teams.

Based on the most recent measurement available, 2016 performance, unless another top-flight starter switches teams before the start of the 2017 season, the Red Sox trio will rank as the best in the game. Using FanGraphs’ WAR from 2016, Porcello (5.2), Price (4.5) and Sale (5.2 with the White Sox) add up to a 14.9 WAR.

What to expect next as Rays still look to deal | Tampa Bay Times

Still trading starter, not Archer

Though they talked plenty about Archer, the Rays put sooooo much value in the combination of his skills, upside and contract (five years of control for $38.5 million) that there doesn’t seem to be any way they could feel they were getting enough for him. While teams are starting to recognize the high value the Rays see in Jake Odorizzi, that price isn’t likely to be met, either. That leaves the Rays pretty much where they were going into the meetings, most ...

How MLB’s New International Rules Change The Game | BaseballAmerica.com

Great work on the international signing rules by Ben Badler. Read the whole thing.

During the 2014-15 signing period, teams spent approximately $152 million on bonuses for players subject to the international bonus pools. That’s right in line with the aggregate bonus pool space in the new CBA.

So where do the owners save money? One, they effectively contain bonus growth. Second, the roughly $152 million is just what owners paid in signing bonuses. They also paid approximately $74 million in ...
