Braves pitcher Minor to have shoulder surgery

At least it would be “Minor” surgery.

The surgery could lessen the chances that Minor will not be offered a contract for next season by the Braves, who lost an arbitration hearing against him this season when the pitcher was awarded a $5.6 million salary.

A recent MRI of his shoulder again showed no structural damage, but if damage is found during surgery it would almost certainly be season-ending.

Presumably the only way Minor might return this seaosn is if no damage is found. Even then, it ...

Alarming stretch has Strasburg searching for answers | Nats Insider

“I think he’s thinking too much,” catcher Wilson Ramos said. “In this game, when you’re thinking too much, it’s hard to do everything right. It’s like, for example, a hitter. When a hitter’s going to the plate and thinking too much, you’re not going to hit the ball well. It happens, too, with a pitcher. He has to go out there and fight and try to do the best he can. You can’t go out and think too much. I think that’s what’s happening with him right now.”

Red Sox worried Justin Masterson may be hurting after he’s rocked - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

Masterson has looked brutal. He’s the first guy to be replaced in the rotation.

“The last two times out for Justin have not been anywhere close to what he’s shown this year—set aside prior to the start of 2015,” Farrell said. “Clearly, he’s not right. Whether that’s physical, whether that’s delivery-wise, the ball is not coming out of his hand as he’s shown the better part of the year. We’ve got to gather information, we’ve got to check on him in the morning, get a full workup, get a better ...

Maybe Phillies should follow Pirates’ roadmap for success

Theo? Even he can’t fast-forward an organization.

Analytics are great. And with the revolutionary data points being logged by MLB’s new Statcast system, the gap between the teams poised to make the best use of that information and the teams still struggling to catch up could widen significantly. But even the most proficient organizations can’t fast-forward through the rebuilding process. Unless they hire Theo Epstein.

Q: How about you?

A: “I don’t like losing. I don’t like losing. I don’t care how you lose or what you have on the field, I don’t like losing. I’m not going to change. That’s the way I am. I was that way when I played, when I coached, managed. I was that way when I worked at MLB. I do not like not doing the best I can and when we lose I think ...

Yankees Insider: Drew to replace Alex Rodriguez as backup 3B - NY Daily News

They must want to keep in the lineup to better Alex’s chances of hitting his next milestone homer.

A-Rod has been nursing a sore left hamstring, sitting out Saturday’s game. He started the past two games and was in the starting lineup Tuesday, even stealing a base in the ninth inning on Monday night. He was seen grabbing at the hamstring after taking the base - which was later scored as defensive indifference - but expressed little concern after the game.

“I think it should be OK,” Rodriguez ...

‘Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud:’ The Best Baseball Book You’ve Never Read

Unless you’re a longtime Yankees fan (or a baseball fan over the age of fifty), Joe Pepitone probably doesn’t mean that much to you. Larry David name-checked him on a handful of Seinfeld episodes – including the one where Kramer gets kicked out of Yankees fantasy camp after plunking Pepitone with a fastball – and literally invoked his name (“Joe Pepitone up in this ############!”) in a memorable Curb Your Enthusiasm moment. But unlike former Yankees teammates Yogi Berra or Mickey Mantle, ...

Cubs-Mets trade will happen ‘at some point’

s both teams move toward contention in the near future, Cubs’ general manager Jed Hoyer believes that the sides will eventually match up on a deal (via Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times).

“We haven’t made a deal yet, but there’s been matches that made sense, and I’m sure we’ll talk to them in the future,” said Hoyer, who has a relationship with Mets player-development executive Paul DePodesta going back to their time together in the Padres’ front office.

Troy Tulowitzki mulls asking Rockies for trade | New York Post

This is rich. Sorry, it comes off as whining. One of the biggest reasons the Rockies have not had winning seasons over the last four years is their best, most expensive player has only played about 60% of his team’s game.

One of the most vital moments of this season will occur Thursday at a breakfast meeting in Los Angeles between Troy Tulowitzki and his longtime agent, Paul Cohen.

The two will decide whether it is time to ask Rockies management for a trade.

“To say that it is not a ...

Rays brass says stadium can spur urban renaissance

JERBS!

Tampa Bay Rays president Brian Auld told a St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce lunch crowd Tuesday that baseball is the only sport that can create “its own sense of place” due to its 81-game home schedule.

“No other sport can do that,” Auld said.

Auld touched briefly on the long-running stadium impasse between the team and the St. Petersburg City Council, repeating the Rays’ mantra that a new stadium has to be good for the team and the region.

A new stadium could spark ...

Mookie Betts has arrived, and just in time for the Red Sox - Over the Monster

Not only is he hitting but, I have heard, his dreamy eyes have caught the attention of certain Yankees fans.

Betts is now batting .248/.322/.442 on the season, good for a 111 OPS+. His BABIP still isn’t all the way fixed, as it’s just .252, but if anything, that’s just encouraging for what’s still to come. Mookie has managed to bat .280/.362/.488 in the 20 games since his initial slump, with three homers and 10 extra-base hits overall. He’s struck out just eight times in his last 95 plate ...

BP Boston: OLDE SOX: THE UNIQUENESS OF WADE BOGGS

Boggs worked to make himself a decent third baseman. Decent. His Gold Gloves were a gift, however. Pedroia has consistently been a great fielder. Their defensive skills are not similar.

But Pedroia has hit for almost exactly the same overall power as Boggs, at least when it comes to a career slugging percentage. Boggs posted a .443 slugging over his tenure, while Pedroia checks in at .444, despite hitting dingers at a far higher rate than Wade ever did. And Pedroia plays stellar defense at a ...

Party on: Wrigley Field bleachers reopen, not much has changed - Chicago Tribune

Get in line lemmings.

There are still some kinks that need to be worked out, like the non-operating elevator at the center-field entrance. And while the concourses are huge, the new exits in the middle of the left-field bleachers are so narrow only one person can fit through at a time, meaning fans will have to smush together or wait until the entrance is open.

“That’s a design flaw someone should’ve noticed,” Schwerin said.

Bridich challenges Rockies to play better | rockies.com

Remember the Blake Street Bombers?

“We have a good collection of players,” said Bridich, the first-year GM whose team is 11-17 and last in the National League West. “And at this point, meaning the last two weeks of the season, they’ve added up to a bad team. I don’t think there’s any other way you can look at it. That’s not saying anything shocking. The players know that.

“There are bad stretches that befall every team in a season, or most every team in a season. This is where we see what type ...

Snopes.com:  Wally Pipp’s Career-Ending ‘Headache’

In the case of Wally Pipp there was no inopportune headache, no “delightful and romantic story” — just a case of a slumping player who lost his job to an up-and-comer and never got it back. But his replacement was the stuff of legend (the indestructible ballplayer finally felled by a fatal disease), and so he became part of a legend that mixed fact and fiction and grew so large even some of the participants came to believe in its fictional aspects.

I don’t know nearly as much baseball history ...
