New baseball helps college teams regain pop on offense - LA Times

I thought the bat rules were a safety issue?

“It was a first-pitch slider and I got it,” said Moyer, a junior. “I thought, ‘That’s a double off the wall.’ Then it kept going and going and went out. I went, ‘Welcome to the new year and the new ball.’”

Moyer had no home runs in 2014. He has hit 14 this season. Having another season of experience helped considerably, as did bulking up by 15 pounds. But Moyers admits that “three or four” of his home runs were aided by the baseball that was ...

Justin Verlander doesn’t look ready to rejoin Detroit Tigers

“Overall, he looked like a guy who hadn’t pitched in a while,” said Toledo manager Larry Parrish, after his team’s 11-6 win. “I would think he would get one more rehab start. But that isn’t my decision.”

Verlander showed velocity – he touched 96 on the radar gun at Victory Field – but he was not able to blow it past any of these minor leaguers. Of his 50 strikes, only about a half dozen were swings and misses.

“Going two months without pitching, I don’t think you are going to feel ...

Adrian Beltre injures thumb, to miss at least two weeks | The Star Telegram The Star Telegram

Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre will miss at least two weeks after suffering a sprained left thumb and a cut that required four stitches in the fifth inning Sunday.

The Rangers said that Beltre was examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister and was being fitting for a splint. The Rangers are off Monday and also have an off day June 8.

Joey Votto drew a three-ball walk

In the seventh inning on Sunday, Votto drew a three-ball walk against Nationals reliever Matt Grace. The Reds had already scored once to break a 2-2 tie prior to the walk, but they went on to score five more en route to an 8-2 win.

I didn’t realize the Canadian exchange rate had gotten so bad.

Granny Baseball: Twins No Fluke

Welcome back to a blogger with pre-registration Primate notoriety.

In 2015, by contrast to 2014, the Twins have held their opponents to 2 or fewer runs 4 more times than their opponents have and allowed 6 or more runs 7 fewer times. That would put them about 9 games over .500. Very close to where they actually are.

Diamondbacks draft: ‘Dynamic’ Dansby Swanson could be pick at No. 1

Swanson hit .333/.411/.475 with 27 doubles and three homers in 282 at-bats as a sophomore; he was at .350/.438/.654 with 21 doubles and 13 homers entering NCAA Regional play. Last year, he took home College World Series MVP honors as Vanderbilt won its first men’s title of any kind in school history.

“The thing that is noticeable about Dansby and guys like him who play at that level, is that they rise to another level when things matter,” Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. “When something is on ...

A’s beat: Sean Doolittle returns to disabled list with strained shoulder - SFGate

This has to be frustrating.

This setback involves a different muscle in Doolittle’s shoulder than his previous injury. That offered scant solace as he contemplated at least two weeks of inactivity; only then will Doolittle pick up a baseball again and start another throwing program.

“It’s really frustrating to work your ass off for four months, come all the way back, throw one inning and then I’m back on the shelf,” he said.

The A’s activated Doolittle on Tuesday, after he made ...

Gregorius Inherited Jeter’s Position, but So Far, Not His Defensive Instincts - NYTimes.com

It’s not easy following a legend.

When a player is struggling at the plate, he can go in the batting cage and tinker with his swing. If he is struggling in the field, he can take more ground balls. But how does a player improve his awareness?

“You have to play,” Girardi said. “You can’t simulate game speed and game conditions. As much as you try, you just can’t do it. They’ll work on a time clock sometimes with runners, and having to go to first base, but it’s not really the same. ...

Re-Examining WAR’s Defensive Spectrum – The Hardball Times

Most of the WAR stuff I do now is geared to baseball sims. One of the issues I’ve been working on the last couple of years is the proper use of positional adjustments. From a practical standpoint, introducing a batting adjustment in runs prior to a conversion to wins actually makes it harder to compare players across positions during draft prep. Mediocre catchers and shortstops end up showing up too high in the overall rankings, which skews calculations for player dollar values in auctions. I ...

Sunday Notes: Featherston, Bass, Knucklers & Eddy R

Michael Roth, who was featured in last week’s column, isn’t a fan of the term “pitching to contact.” As a matter of fact, the 25-year-old lefty calls it “the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.” He likes striking hitters out, he simply doesn’t do a whole lot of it. Pitching for Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate, Roth has a 5.6 K/9 to go with a 5-1 record and a 3.24 ERA.

“People probably label me as a guy who pitches to contact, because I don’t strike a lot of guys out,” Roth ...

Baseball brings Byrd, inspirational teen together

Paul Byrd. Good guy.

That first year he became aware of Tarez Miller, who played for a team called the Shamrocks. By the following season, 2010, the Shamrocks had disbanded and Tarez showed up to try out for Byrd’s Georgia Roadrunners. He was clearly good enough. He was also polite and always hustled. But Byrd had a practical concern. Tarez lived an hour and fifteen minutes away. There were regular practices. How would he make the commute?

“I inquired and said, ‘What about his family ...

Jerry Dior, Designer of Major League Baseball’s Logo, Dies at 82 - NYTimes.com

It looks like Killebrew to me.

Per his instructions, he drew a generic baseball player. (In interviews years later, Mr. Dior stressed that the figure was not modeled on Harmon Killebrew as many people, including Killebrew himself, believed.) He executed the design in Magic Marker, originally making it blue and green before switching to a patriotic palette.

“It just came to me,” Mr. Dior told The Wall Street Journal in 2008. “I did the rough sketch and cleaned it up a bit, and that was ...

Peralta is baseball’s most productive shortstop | cardinals.com

Please, MLB decision makers, make the Statcasty defensive numbers available.

While a large part of Peralta’s value comes from his underrated defense, we can also look at Statcast™ and see just how much the ball is jumping off his bat. Peralta’s second double on Friday night, this one coming in the seventh inning off of Juan Nicasio to drive in Kolten Wong with the game’s final run, came off the bat at 103.8 mph. That’s the sixth-hardest tracked non-homer ball of the season for Peralta, who ...

The New York Times:  ‘Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty,’ by Charles Leerhsen

Cobb remains a puzzle missing certain pieces. This biography takes the crudely drawn monster away, and in place leaves a more common figure in the world of sports, the player who is “at once the dreaded enemy and the biggest draw.” Leerhsen gives him to us incomplete but human, rather than as a myth served up whole.

The Astros Are Making A Historic Turnaround

The Astros’ turnaround becomes historic, however, when you look at how bad they were two years ago. In 2013, the Astros finished 51-111, good for a .315 winning percentage and the bottom of the division. The team was not felled by injuries or misfortune — it was genuinely terrible in every phase of the game.

Dan Uggla is a good hugger, Washington Nationals say

Uggla is known for his hugs. Freddie Freeman, with the Braves, is perhaps more well-known for his many on-field hugs, but Uggla said he taught that to Freeman. Fans have held up signs at games such as “I Want a Huggla from Uggla” at games. His nickname is, sometimes, Huggla.

“That’s one of our pregame things: hugging before the game,” Harper said. “I don’t konw. Hugs for Uggs, right? That’s what everybody says. I’m a big hugger, too. I hug [Drew] Storen out there every time ...
