Angell: Long Wait, Great Win

As happens so often in a long series, the joys and triumphs of the winners and their rooters remain pure, while the rest of us, and not only the Dodger fans, try not to think about several inexorable but excruciating failures and pains. We must put aside, for instance, what today must look like for Yu Darvish, last night’s Dodger starter, who was gone after those two innings, and who had lasted for a bare five outs in his Game One start, while coughing up six hits and four runs. Dodger first ...

Clayton Kershaw on World Series loss: ‘Maybe one of these days I won’t fail’ | CBS Sports

“Maybe one of these days I won’t fail, we won’t fail and we’ll win one of these things,’’ Kershaw said, finding little consolation in the team’s 104 regular-season victories. “…There’s only one team that can succeed. There’s only one team that wins the last game, so that’s tough.

“I think once the dust settles and we go home, we can realize that we had a pretty amazing season and we finished in second place, which nobody cares about or remembers.’‘

Well, there it is, the saddest thing I’ll ...

Who belongs on the Houston Astros All-Time Team?

From 1962 to now: these are the greatest Astros of all-time. (Colt .45s too)

This team has very strong starting pitching, excellent speed in the lineup, and a logjam at second base (where do you play Biggio?). The Astros still haven’t had a great catcher or third baseman.

Money dispute could leave Japan’s Babe Ruth stuck there | NY Post

The MLB-NPB posting agreement expired Tuesday. The sides, though, were close to an agreement to move to a system whereby the Japanese team losing a player to MLB would receive a percentage of the deal the player signed with an MLB club — believed to be between 15 and 20 percent.

However, Otani’s team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, refused to give its needed vote to the deal unless the righty pitcher was grandfathered into the old deal, whereby the Fighters would receive the maximum $20 million ...

Bloomberg: Republicans Push to End Muni Bond Sales by Businesses, Stadiums

Neil deMause, to the courtesy phone…

Congressional Republicans proposed barring the sale of municipal bonds for professional sports stadiums and privately run infrastructure projects such as toll roads and airports, a step that’s at odds with President Donald Trump’s push to increase funding for public works.

The tax-cutting bill released Thursday would also eliminate advanced refundings of debt issues, a popular refinancing technique with state and local governments, as well as bonds ...

The Angels and outfielder Justin Upton have agreed to a five-year contract extension that will keep Upton in Los Angeles through 2022, the club announced Thursday.

Upton’s deal is worth $106 million, a source told MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi.

Sun-Sentinel: The Case for Trading Stanton

All the arguments for shopping Stanton in one place.

“Honestly, if you’re going to lose, lose a series, it’s whatever. I don’t really care,” Stanton said. “If it’s not enough to help win, then personal stuff [doesn’t matter]. I’ve had enough personal stuff. If we don’t win, it’s not that fun.”

It’s not hard to extrapolate that to the Marlins’ situation overall. Eight years into his career, Stanton has never played on a winning team. He’s had enough of the losing.

Of course, ...

Carlos Beltran finally gets his World Series ring | FTW

While his teammates sprayed beer and champagne around a cramped visitors clubhouse at Dodger Stadium following their 5-1 Game 7 win, Beltran, who saw only three at-bats in the series and did not record a hit, suggested he will consider retirement.

“My decision is going to be difficult — playing one more year, or deciding to stay home,” he told For The Win. “But staying home won’t mean staying at home. Staying home would still mean being able to be around the game of baseball. I love ...

On-Topic Politics: Angelos Scraps Nats Naval Academy Baseball Classic

The Naval Academy Baseball Classic was slated to be held yearly through 2019, but due to a territorial issue with the Baltimore Orioles, the event will no longer take place, according to multiple sources.

Because the Nationals playing in the Orioles’ domain violates the MLB Constitution, Baltimore could have canceled last spring’s game. The Orioles instead agreed to allow the 2017 game to go on as scheduled, given its nature.

Giants’ Hunter Pence wore ashes of Dodgers fan in necklace

In a game at Dodger Stadium last month, San Francisco Giants outfielder Hunter Pence carried some ashes of a deceased Dodgers fan with him in a necklace on the field.

According to a documentary commissioned by UNINTERRUPTED, the Dodgers turned down a request to spread some of the ashes of Henry Janiszewski, who died in 2010, at the ballpark. Filmmaker Matt Liston of the digital series “Mr. Impossible” said he contacted Pence, who agreed to help Janiszewski’s daughter.

Historic World Series Home Run Rate may be Result of Slicker Baseballs

Pitchers and coaches from both the Dodgers and Astros complained Saturday night about the World Series baseballs—and this time the controversy is not just about liveliness. They say there is a new problem: the baseballs used in the World Series are slicker than the ones used in the regular season because of a difference in the grain of the leather. The slicker World Series balls particularly make it hard to throw a good slider, they claim.

Astros pitching coach Brent Strom: “We had a ...

Many found Gurriel’s antics as juvenile and insulting as they were sadly familiar.

More frustration for Clayton Kershaw | LA Times

In the most important start of his career, Kershaw failed to deliver. In the franchise’s most crucial game in nearly three decades, he unraveled.

Again.

The Dodgers provided Kershaw with a four-run advantage. He couldn’t protect it. They broke the stalemate by scoring another three runs for him. He couldn’t preserve that lead, either.

Astros on verge of title after beating Dodgers in epic Game 5 | Houston Chronicle

In a back-and-forth battle between two heavyweights, the Astros overcame three deficits and countless momentum swings to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 13-12. The final Minute Maid Park crowd of the season was treated to a game that was all sorts of crazy and ultimately left the American League champions merely one win away from their first championship.

That. Was. Awesome.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed a report by ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick that the Braves were denied permission to interview Moore, who signed a Royals contract extension of undisclosed length.

Japan Times: Hawks win Game 2 of Japan Series after contentious call

A close play at the plate overturned by replay leads to the deciding run in Game 2 of the Japan Series.

The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks had definitely scored one run on Akira Nakamura’s hit to right to tie the game. The question was, had they actually scored two and taken a one-run lead, or had the Yokohama BayStars recorded the third out of the inning by the slimmest of margins.

After a very, very lengthy review, the verdict came in: Kenta Imamiya was safe at home, and the Hawks had a one-run ...
