Royalty learns to catch Trout

I wasn’t able to see Game 2 of the Royals/Angels series nor have I had a chance to see a lot of Angels games.  When I have watched the Angels, I haven’t noticed this and Trout seems to rake.  But that is a small sample.  So, Angels watchers, is there anything to this idea?

Giants’ Unlikely Strategy Leads to Game 1 Victory

“It seems to be a formula that works,” Giants hitting coach Hensley Meulens said. “That was our approach. Not to be too big. Not to try to do too much. Just put the ball in play and see what happens.”

I guess a guy who struck out in 30% of his big-league at-bats would know.

Poz: Royals continue to confound baseball logic

It’s worth talking for a second about Aoki, because he so thoroughly symbolizes this team. As a young man, he was a major star in his home country of Japan, a whirlwind of a hitter a sort of a second Ichiro. At 29 he somewhat inexplicably fell off. He then found himself in Milwaukee, and this past offseason, he came to Kansas City. He was thoroughly disappointing until late September when, for no apparent reason, he briefly proved impossible to get out. He hit .458 the last two weeks of the ...

Passan: Orioles’ ALDS win shows why Buck Showalter is the playoffs’ best manager

It’ll be hilarious if Yost or McClendon wins the award.

Perhaps the worst trend of modern relief pitching is the intractability of bullpen roles. Their very existence is manicured. At some point, when baseball recognized that, yeah, it probably is a good idea to exploit platoon splits, managers started slotting relievers in specific situations. Seventh inning for one guy, eighth for another, ninth and only ninth for the closer. And even if the heart of the order was up in the eighth and Scrub ...

News Report: Derek Jeter’s Hush-Hush Bash Could Be A Wedding

Feels like forever since we had a Jeter thread…

There’s a “buzz” that baseball’s most famous bachelor will be off the market for good by Monday, TMZ reported. But the site acknowledged not all of its sources believed the bash — with “several high-end party vendors” at the ready — was wedding-related.

The 40-year-old Jeter, who played the final game of his Hall of Fame-worthy career on Sunday, has said he’d like to start a family in retirement.

“I look forward to doing ...

SBNation: (Satire) Sansevere: Douse Mauer in Gasoline and Chase Him with Matches

Since this blog originally posted, there have been a slew of tweets asking if I’m some kind of maniac for suggesting Mauer be set on fire. News flash: You can catch fire anywhere.  Your kitchen, a forest fire, a place where they make flamethrowers.

Richard Pryor set himself on fire freebasing cocaine in his home. It. Can. Happen. Anywhere.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-3-2014

Pittsburgh Press, October 3, 1914:

As soon as all the glamor and stress of the world’s series is over, Bob Shawkey, Connie Mack’s esteemed slab artist with the Athletics, is going to marry H. Mason Clapp, who became known as “The Tiger Lady” four years ago when, ere a tempestuous honeymoon was scarcely over, she was arrested for shooting her husband in the neck during an argument about whether one’s bedroom windows should be kept open or closed.

Mrs. Clapp, like her husband, was well known ...

Thirteen Ways of Looking at Greg Maddux

It’s 2014. I’m thirty-seven. My wife and daughter are both asleep. I’m a thousand miles from the stadium-turned-parking-lot. On YouTube, Kenny Lofton of the American League Champion Cleveland Indians looks at the first pitch for a ball. Inside, low. I don’t remember the call. I remember all of us standing, holding our breath. Then I remember light. Thousands of lights. Waves of tiny diamonds. The whole stadium flashing and Jason, who would die five months later on the side of a south ...

A Giant Friendship

Krukow sat in the waiting room, terrified, surrounded by terminal patients with various stages of ALS. “I’m sitting there thinking to myself: Is this gonna be me?” he said. “I’m sitting there for a while. Your mind goes crazy.”

Katz looked at him and said: “I can tell you what you have. You’ve got a muscle disease. It’s not life-threatening.”

“I thought I had won the lottery,” Krukow said.

The diagnosis was something called inclusion-body myositis, or IBM, a blandly ...

That means the rotation comes into the postseason at full strength: Kershaw-Greinke-Ryu-Haren. Add that to a full strength lineup of Gordon-Puig-Gonzo-Kemp-Ramirez-Crawford-Uribe-Ellis with Van Slyke and Turner against lefties and woah boy, I’m excited for playoff baseball!

Robothal: Don’t expect Beane to stand pat in wake of A’s collapse

Rich Harden is available.

So now what does Billy Beane do?

One rival executive raised an interesting possibility in the aftermath of the Athletics’ stunning 9-8 loss to the Royals in the American League wild-card game:

Trade right-hander Jeff Samardzija.

Another rival exec, knowing how Beane never likes to get caught in between, speculated that the Athletics’ GM might trade third baseman Josh Donaldson, too.

Wishful thinking? Perhaps. But Beane acquired Samardzija with the idea that the ...

Neyer: The Power of JABO

JABO might be able to do the hully-gully, but unfortunately they can’t imitate Vin Scully.

A few months ago we launched a new microsite, Just a Bit Outside (JABO). Now we’re gearing up for a grand experiment: Game 1 of the NLCS, powered by JABO, and broadcast on FOX Sports 1 on October 11 at 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific.

Of course, FOX will provide the traditional broadcast, featuring Joe Buck, Harold Reynolds, and Tom Verducci in the booth, Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews on the field. Meanwhile, ...

Tim Hudson on Nationals-Giants: ‘What do you have between your legs?’

The building of narratives for the Nationals-Giants National League Division Series can officially begin, and the juxtaposition between the recent playoff success for each team is an easy place to start. The Giants have won two of the last four World Series, a grizzled bunch that has survived seven consecutive postseason elimination games. The Nationals squandered a six-run lead in Game 5.

That’s an easy storyline that columnists and reporters are sure to beat into a fine paste by 3:07 p.m. ...

Cabrera was sitting at his locker before the Tigers’ workout Wednesday in Baltimore when Max Scherzer came by with a clipboard containing the sheets players must sign to receive their shares of the post-season playoff pool. That’s money, real cash money.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-2-2014

Pittsburgh Press, October 2, 1914:

Umpire Klem established what is believed to be a precedent in baseball yesterday in the game between the Boston and New York National league teams. In the seventh inning, while the Giants were at bat, Klem took exception to what he regarded as unusually loud talk on the New York bench. He ordered the players to lower their voices.

Deciding presently that he had not been obeyed, Klem directed that the bench be cleared of everybody except Acting Manager Mike ...

For old fans of Senators, Washington baseball success is a contradiction in terms

At Chevy Chase Elementary School in the early 1960s, my friend Alan Alper heralded every baseball season’s opening day by predicting confidently that the Washington Senators would have a winning season and maybe go to the World Series.

He was always wrong. Drastically so. The Senators were so bad that their woes inspired a best-selling book and Broadway musical.

It never stopped Alper. He was committed, devoted, a true believer.

“I didn’t think about how they were so bad — I just ...

Kovacevic: For Pirates, the sickening sound of silence DK on Pittsburgh Sports

I read a couple of tweets about how unfair the Wild Card system is to the fans. The complaint was, it’s a coin flip. No kidding. It’s not a bug. It’s a feature. If you don’t want your season ended on a playoff “coin flip”, win your division.

KC’s Baseball Writing Royalty

But Neyer didn’t just turn me on to baseball writing. He turned me onto the Kansas City Royals.

Now, I am not a Royals fan: I am a Cardinals fan, which is not quite the opposite of a Royals fan, but it’s close. But Neyer was a fan of the Royals, which was something else that was new. I hadn’t read many sportswriters who openly admitted they were cheering for a particular team; my college journalism professors had told me that was against the rules. (They were wrong, by the way.) But ...
