Cobb County spent all its money on Braves stadium, doesn’t have enough left for public parks | Field of Schemes

It’s worthwhile to note that this isn’t just a case of the county spending general revenue on the stadium and having none left over for parks, which would be bad enough; rather, the county actually redirected tax revenue that had been earmarked for public parks to pay for the stadium bonds, even though the park project was approved by voters, and the stadium never was. I’d say something snarky here about Cobb County’s attitude toward democracy, but Lee has already managed that quite ...

Neil Walker returns to Pittsburgh as a Met with no regrets | Newsday

For most of his adult life, Neil Walker existed as a living, breathing anachronism, a hometown kid making good in his own backyard. For 11 seasons, he stood in stark relief against the mercenaries who represent the norm in professional sports, his black and gold Pirates uniform a reminder of a charmed existence.

So when that changed this past offseason with a trade to the Mets, he needed time to process the end of an era. “I felt a bit slighted,” said Walker, who returns to Pittsburgh on ...

Jason McLeod, Cubs VP of Player Development and Amateur Scouting

TB: Clearly drafting is difficult, and you mentioned things coming back to burn you. It seems that no matter how good a draft is, there’s always that one pick you could have made. How difficult is it to deal with that regret looking back? Do you get over it quickly or are there things that stick with you?

JM: I think a little of both. It depends on the process that you have which led to the other pick and how good you felt about that pick at the time. Certainly, gosh, every scouting director’s ...

Texas Rangers: Grant: Ten years later, Rangers GM Jon Daniels reveals what his first MLB draft taught him | SportsDay

“Our clarity and our process have been streamlined exponentially,” Levine said.

Said Daniels: “I’m less involved now than back then. Really stems from a near-unconditional trust in Kip and our staff and respect for their process and preparation. My involvement is more setting direction and philosophy, asking challenging questions at times, and working through strategy. But with very few exceptions I’ve stayed out of the player-picking business.”

Even though he ultimately bears accountability ...

OTP 2016 June 6: Patrick Murphy aims his youthful political exuberance at U.S. Senate seat

By his senior year, Murphy said he was in conversations to play baseball at the University of Miami and a few other schools. But instead, he opted to take a “post-graduate year” after graduating from Palmer Trinity. Murphy went to the elite Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in 2001-02, where tuition, room and board this year is about $58,000 a year.

“I didn’t know which sport I wanted to play in college,” he said. “So Lawrenceville gave me another opportunity to play sports ...

Miami Marlins say Josh Naylor injures Greensboro Grasshoppers teammate Stone Garrett in prank involving knife | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

I guess nobody told him he shouldn’t play with knives.

“Naylor has a reputation of being a bit of a prankster, but this one obviously went a little too far,” Hill told the Sun-Sentinel. “Obviously, he’s torn up about it. This is a good friend, his roommate. They came into pro ball together, so they’re good friends.

“Hopefully, it’ll just be ... short term and [Garrett] can get back healthy and return to form and continue on his career.”

Dodgers DFA Carl Crawford

Carl Crawford has been designated for assignment. That means that the Dodgers have 10 days to put Crawford on waivers, trade him, release him or send him to the minors (with his permission). Often times, this move is essentially the team cutting the player.

In Crawford’s case, this is a last resort move. Crawford, 34, is making $21.607 million this season and will make $21.857 million next season. If someone else picks up Crawford (either by waivers or simply signing him after he’s released), ...

Can New York Mets’ Matt Harvey make it two good starts in a row? - Mets Blog- ESPN

I know what I’ll be watching on this rainy day.

Harvey returns to the mound Sunday as the New York Mets aim to complete a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins. He has a tough matchup. Harvey (4-7, 5.37 ERA) opposes ace Jose Fernandez (8-2, 2.53) in the 1:10 p.m. ET finale.

This year, the trade market will favor relievers, not starters

I call bullshit.

We hear that as long as the Dolans own the Indians, there won’t be a threat of them leaving Cleveland, where they simply can’t draw. But if the Dolans sold the team? Well, that could be a different story. The Indians are already down about 2,500 fans per game from last season, when they averaged 17,172 after 26 dates.

How Mookie Betts went from homer-less to slugger

“I just remember every time I talked to U.L., it was just, when he gets ahead in the count or is sitting on his pitch, he needs to be a little more aggressive to it and let it go instead of being too picky and drawing walks to get on base,” said Hyers. “Mookie is so coachable. He was a leadoff guy, so he wanted to get on base. At that time, we were teaching patience and swinging at strikes. Mookie knew the strike zone. He saw the ball as good as anyone I’ve been around. It was a matter ...

Lance McCullers on Spin, Angles, and Embarrassing Batters | FanGraphs Baseball

I hope your head isn’t spinning.

On setting up hitters with spin: “A lot of people think about pitching as setting up the batter based on pitch location. I think more of setting up batters with spin. If I throw a good hard fastball with good backspin, and then rip over a curveball from that same slot, it’s going to be hard for the batter to tell the difference. It will be hard for him to tell the difference between the four-seam I just threw at the thigh, versus my hard, 12-6 breaking ball ...

Padres trade James Shields to White Sox

In their most public admission of a rebuild to date, the Padres on Saturday traded right-hander James Shields and cash to the Chicago White Sox for minor league right-hander Erik Johnson and infield prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. San Diego has agreed to pay a little more than half of the $58 million left on Shields’ contract.

The White Sox signed Tatis as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic last July 2 ...

Vanderbilt’s Everett Dies In Drowning

Vanderbilt freshman righthander Donny Everett has died, drowning in a lake in Coffee County, Tenn., The Tennessean reported.

Everett, who ranked No. 21 on the BA500 a year ago but was drafted in the 29th round by the Brewers due in part to his Vanderbilt commitment, was 19.

Sad news from Tennessee. Everett was really good - here’s his 2015 MLB draft video.

Fox Sports: Anthony Rizzo almost tricked an umpire into thinking he was starting a fight

Give the catcher his throwing lane, damnit!

Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs are hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend, and the first inning got off to a rough start for the star first baseman. In the first inning, Rizzo was beaned in the head by Diamondbacks catcher Wellington Castillo, who was simply trying to throw the ball back to the pitcher.

After taking the throw off the noggin, Rizzo turned to Castillo, his former teammate, and stared him down. He then playfully shoved the ...

How a 157-pitch game in Kansas explains everything wrong with youth baseball - Yahoo Sports

The KSHSAA rules, by which Hudson said West would continue to abide, are actually quite terrible. The nine-inning threshold is too arbitrary. Allowing a pitcher to go 12 innings over a 48-hour period is inviting trouble. If Kansas wanted to stop this, it could do what Illinois, Texas, Minnesota and other states are trying: implement hard-and-fast pitch-count rules.

This won’t eliminate pitching injuries. Nothing will. Throwing a baseball at high velocities can be dangerous even among the most ...

Corey Seager hits 3 homers in Dodgers’ victory | MLB.com

Seager entered Friday night’s game leading the Dodgers in home runs and extended his lead with his second multi-homer game of the season. If you combine Seager’s 12 homers with Thompson’s nine and the eight from their other roommate, Joc Pederson, the household of young Dodgers has seven more homers (29) than the entire Braves team (22).

You’ll never stop the Marlon Byrds of the world from taking PEDs - SBNation.com

I disagree with the idea that bigger penalties wouldn’t be effective. Byrd knew that he’d be back. A quicker path to permanent bans would, at the least, have prevented him from getting another contract. A penalty which would require him to repay money earned and force teams and players to terminate long-term contracts would also disincentivize PED use. (I realize collecting paid salary would be difficult in many cases.)

Where was the risk? There was none. And after not taking a risk, Byrd made ...

Seven homers are a big deal.

Mark Trumbo and Adam Jones both went deep twice and Manny Machado blasted a two-out, three-run homer in the seventh inning off reliever Junichi Tazawa to break a 5-5 tie. The O’s homered in five straight innings, including Francisco Pena’s first career long ball in his Baltimore debut, to overcome a rocky sixth from starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who surrendered five runs in the frame after allowing just one hit in the first five innings.

Sources: Dodgers won’t be punished for using laser rangefinders to help outfielders

Friggin’ laser beams.

Baseball will not discipline the Dodgers for using a laser rangefinder to predetermine defensive positions before games, according to major-league sources.

The in-game use of such a device would violate the sport’s rules on electronics, but the league said that pregame use is permissible and determined that the Dodgers committed no infraction, sources said.

Baseball, however, notified all clubs on Thursday that golf tees, chalk and paint cannot serve as markers for ...

Justine Siegal was the first female coach in affiliated baseball when she worked at the Athletics’ instructional league camp last fall.

Major League Baseball Should Have an Asian Heritage Month

ajor League Baseball has held a Hispanic Heritage Month every season for the past several years, and during that time many teams in the league trot out special edition jerseys with their team name rendered in Spanish.
Several teams take this occasion as a chance to have a bit of fun with their branding and create some really great jerseys:

Since this program is such a fantastic way to reach new Hispanic fans, I think it’s time Major League Baseball start taking a similar approach to court ...

Chicago Eagle, July 3, 1916:

“Iron Men” is the latest nickname for the Toledo baseball club. Two Toledo sport writers are using the name exclusively in referring to the club. Whether it will become popular is problematical.

Rajahs and Bresna Hens were two names that for a short time seemed to strike the popular fancy, but fandom decreed that neither was suitable andreturned to the old name of Mud Hens.

Toledo’s baseball team was owned at this point by Roger Bresnahan, by the way. I’d have been ...

Heyman: Harper and Machado long shots to stay?

But the issue with Harper is not just his supreme talent – he’s generally seen as one of the two best players in the game, along with Mike Trout – but also his stunning youth. That the sides haven’t seriously talked may be a reflection on the fact there’s thought to be no common ground. Or maybe it’s just an assumption that there’s none. Maybe the Nats have heard the whispers that the asking price may be $40 to $50 million a year, and perhaps for 15 years (that could make it as ...
