Sources: Wei-Yin Chen, Marlins agree to five-year deal

The Miami Marlins and free agent left-hander Wei-Yin Chen have agreed to a five-year deal that includes a sixth-year player option, sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney.

The five-year deal is worth $80 million and could be worth up to $96 million with the option, according to the MLB Network.

Chen, 30, was one of the top remaining free agent pitchers available. He went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA with the Baltimore Orioles last season.

BREAKING: The rumor now is the Marlins might look to trade Wei-Yin ...

Strat-O-Matic Celebrity Q & A with Ben Bernanke

Question: Do you think playing Strat-O-Matic improved your math skills at all? If so, how?

Ben Bernanke:  Yes. For example, I “reverse engineered” Strat-O-Matic to figure out the relationship between the cards and the players’ statistics.  I also got good at figuring batting averages in my head.

Richmond Should Rebuild Ballpark, Build Train Station

Just a free-for-all of ideas from a tranny. If you like baseball and trains, you’ll LOVE this thinkpiecebrainstormgonemad.

Finally, there is the baseball ballpark itself. I have always urged that baseball continue to be located there. In 2006, in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, I wrote that “the Braves — or any other professional baseball franchise — should stay right at The Diamond. It doesn’t matter whether it is a new or renovated stadium. The current location is perfect if one looks ...

Milwaukee Journal, January 12, 1916:

Harry Sinclair, angel of the Federal league, apparently expects to recuperate his losses by selling his baseball flesh at fancy prices. Here is what he asks for some of the athletes.

Benny Kauff: $85,000
Lee Magee: $60,000
Gene Packard: $25,000

Sinclair has about as much chance of getting that kind of money for his players as the Kaiser’s son would have in Paris.

Interestingly, all of the baseball people named in this story were either jailed, banned, or ...

The Impending Battle Over the Future of Televised Baseball

The case — Garber v. Office of the Commissioner of Baseball — may not be the highest-profile lawsuit currently proceeding against MLB. But from the league’s perspective, it’s almost certainly the most important.

Long-time Fangraphs readers are probably already familiar with the Garber suit, as we’ve previously covered the case on a number of different occasions. By way of a brief recap, though, the lawsuit essentially alleges that MLB violates federal antitrust law by assigning its ...

Cardinals close to acquiring Korean reliever

Oh has an agreement in place with the Cardinals, according to multiple reports out of Korea, and the righthander is expected to finalize a new contract as early as Monday, when he’s scheduled to take a physical in St. Louis. The 33-year-old righthander had 41 saves this past season for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan, and he has not only 357 career saves but also two of the best nicknames for a ninth-inning reliever in the world: “Stone Buddha” and “The Final Boss.”

OTP - 2016 Jaunary 11: Political playoffs set to begin

These excessively long seasons and postseasons are not only the province of professional football, or presidential election cycles. Major League Baseball, the onetime spring and summer sport, now plays its World Series into November, while professional basketball, formerly a winter sport, plays out a season that routinely stretches into June.

At least in regard to those last two sports, there are action heroes to carry the day. There is Matt Harvey throwing the fastball and Steph Curry burying ...

Nationals Acquire Ben Revere From Blue Jays For Drew Storen

The Nationals and Blue Jays have officially struck a deal that will send outfielder Ben Revere to the Washington and reliever Drew Storen to Toronto, as Jon Heyman first reported on Twitter. A player to be named later will also head to D.C., and the Nats will kick in cash sufficient to offset the differences in the players’ anticipated 2016 salaries, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.

Kriseman’s proposal would allow Rays to look at possible stadium sites | TBO.com and The Tampa Tribune

Sure it is.

Mayor Rick Kriseman sent the city council another agreement with the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday in an attempt to determine whether the team stays in the city or leaves.

The new proposal adds a few twists to Kriseman’s original proposal, which would have cost the team up to $24 million to leave Tropicana Field before its lease with the city expires in 2027.

Kriseman called the deal beneficial to “taxpayers, baseball fans, and to those seeking the clarity necessary to invest in ...

Yes, the 15 MLB teams with Fox TV deals were reportedly in talks to lift blackout restrictions for the upcoming season, so the Padres may soon be back on my list of viewing options. But even if reports are true, a mere half of the league is not good enough. If the powers-that-be want fans to support local teams, they must make it easier to do so. Otherwise, said fans and local teams don’t win, and that’s a shame.

Former Cardinals scouting director to be indicted for hacking the Astros today

Costa says between 5-12 charges will be filed. While the charges are yet unknown, the Federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act would cover such activities. The FBI has been investigating for months. There are serious ...

Manny on PEDs, Hall: ‘Sometimes you think you’re doing right, but you’re not’ | Chicago Sun-Times

Why would players already talented enough to play at high levels in the majors, already capable of making millions in the game, capable of lasting a decade or longer in the majors, take performance enhancers? Take the chance?

After all, those are the players in question when it comes to the Hall of Fame debate – exemplified most by Bonds and Clemens if you believe the timelines of their alleged uses.

“Life is like that. You make mistakes,” Ramirez said. “Everybody makes mistakes. ...

Denard Span gets 3-year contract from Giants | MLB.com

The Giants and free-agent outfielder Denard Span have agreed to a three-year deal, pending a physical.

The deal is reportedly worth $31 million ($10.33 million per season) plus performance bonuses.

Span, who turns 32 in February, is coming off a season in which he played just 61 games because of various injuries. The initial thought throughout the industry was Span would seek a one-year deal to re-establish his value, but his versatility and play when healthy—posting a career-high 184 hits in ...
