Carson Smith brings different look to Red Sox bullpen - Sports - providencejournal.com - Providence, RI

The Red Sox can really use him.

It’s Carson Smith’s offseason workout partner, former Red Sox and current Pirates All-Star reliever Mark Melancon, who probably sums it up best.

“You’ve got righties, and you’ve got lefties,” Melancon said. “And then you’ve got Carson. It’s almost like a third dimension.”

“It’s like sidearm, but it’s not sidearm, you know?” said Mookie Betts, who has done his best to forget the times he’s faced Smith. “It’s not over the top, it’s not three-quarters, but it’s ...

Book Review: The Only Rule Is It Has To Work - BaseballAmerica.com

Picking this up later today. Has anyone already read it?

Lindbergh and Miller quickly realize that getting buy-in from the players and coaches is a key aspect of any of the changes they want to implement. It’s what makes this book different and provides a consistent theme from the preseason to the end of the season.

By having the two authors trade off writing responsibilities from chapter to chapter, the book bounces back and forth in style and tone, but it works. The Only Rule Is It Has To ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-3-2016

Toledo News-Bee, May 3, 1916:

[Detroit pitcher] Harry [Coveleski] was sitting on the bench when Brother Stan was mowing down the Tigers in Monday’s moist conflict…“Atta boy, Stan, atta boy. Guess that brother of mine hasn’t got something,” he yelled as Veach fouled to Turner.

“That’s it, Stan. You’ve got his number,” he muttered as Sam Crawford hit a roller to Howard, forcing Cobb at second.

“Say, Harry, if you are going to root for Cleveland, go over on the Cleveland bench,” shouted [Detroit ...

Yankees GM: ‘We urgently need to stop the bleeding’ | New York Post

A tourniquet may be needed.

“We urgently need to stop the bleeding now,” Cashman said Monday in a telephone interview. “We’ve been saying that. We’re working towards that.”

That doesn’t mean changes are imminent — and for sure, as Cashman made clear, it bodes no trouble for manager Joe Girardi or his coaches. Yet while Cashman wants to give his current roster more time to climb out of this hole, he won’t wait too long.

“We’ll continue to do the work necessary to put ...

Vin Scully Talks Beards For Five Minutes

Longtime Dodgers announcer Vin Scully is going all out during his final stint in the booth. The season’s only a month old, and we’ve already had two great episodes of Storytime With Vin Scully. Two weeks ago, he debunked the myths surrounding the number 13, and this weekend he gave us the entire history of beards:

Pablo Sandoval to Undergo Shoulder Surgery

The Red Sox announced that third baseman Pablo Sandoval will undergo left shoulder surgery in the coming days.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedist who examined Sandoval in Florida on Monday. Sandoval, 29, had complained of shoulder soreness in early April and was placed on the disabled list on April 13.

The Red Sox did not provide an update on how long Sandoval will be out or what kind of rehab his surgery will entail, noting in a press release that more ...

The Braves Play Taxpayers Better Than They Play Baseball

Over the last 15 years, the Braves have extracted nearly half a billion in public funds for four new homes, each bigger and more expensive than the last. The crown jewel, backed by $392 million in public funding, is a $722 million, 41,500-seat stadium for the major league club set to open next year in Cobb County, northwest of Atlanta. Before Cobb, the Braves built three minor league parks, working their way up the ladder from Single A to Triple A. In every case, they switched cities, pitting ...

Francisco Cervelli’s framing an advantage for Pirates - SweetSpot- ESPN

The Pirates fully appreciate what he brings beyond his pitch presentation.

“It’s priceless,” pitching coach Ray Searage said. “Everything he does behind the plate—his execution and game calling—helps build the trust between him and the entire pitching staff. He has grown tremendously as a catcher in the two years he has been here.”

But Cervelli still feels as if he has more to do and more “love” to give.

“I feel like I’m not there yet,” he said. “I’m going to keep working until my very last ...

Facts and fiction from the first month of the MLB season | FOX Sports

I can’t see Beane trading Gray.

Fiction: Sonny Gray is certain to be traded

I’m not naive—when it comes to Billy Beane and trades, it’s always wise to bet the over. Still, the Athletics were one game under .500 in April, their revamped bullpen is performing quite well and Sean Manaea and Jesse Hahn could make their rotation even better.

Are we talking postseason? Probably not. But in 2017? Maybe. The Athletics’ farm system is improving, and Gray will remain affordable next season in his first ...

Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish breezes through his first rehab start since Tommy John surgery with Frisco RoughRiders | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

Taking a cautious approach into his first outing in almost 21 months, Yu Darvish emerged with a sense of relief on Sunday.

“I hoped I’m not going to blow (out) my elbow,” the three-time American League All-Star told reporters through an interpreter. “That’s what I was thinking.”

Darvish had no trouble of the sort and breezed through a pair of hitless frames for Double-A Frisco in his first rehab start since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March. He fanned two, allowed one walk and threw 18 ...

J.J. Hardy foot injury could lead to hot-hitting Pedro Alvarez and others in the Orioles lineup - Baltimore Sun

Things might get interesting on the left side of the infield if Hardy will be out for a while.

Showalter touts the work Alvarez has put in at third base and first base as he prepares for an opportunity like the one that’s staring at him. There’s definitely going to be a place for whichever infielder gets summoned from the minors, and who knows if Reimold will hold up with more playing time or Kim can keep up the strides he made over his month in the batting cage.

Washington Times, May 2, 1916:

Charlie Chaplin…had the honor of throwing out the first ball at the Los Angeles game, opening the Pacific Coast baseball season for 1916.

After the sphere had been tossed to the first batter to step to the plate, it was presented to Chaplin by the team’s manager. The fans gave the comedian a big hand, despite the fact that the ball, as he hurled it toward the box, fell short, bumping against the head of the umpire. There were no casualties, however.

Chaplin then ...

Improving Projections with Exit Velocity – The Hardball Times

When used in conjunction with Steamer, the impact of exit velocity was still significant, both statistically and practically. We can expect a hitter to outperform his Steamer projected wOBA by roughly three points for each mph of previous-season exit velocity. (We found a similar effect when using either ZiPS projections or an average of ZiPS and Steamer.)

10 Degrees: Is a juiced ball causing MLB’s large home run spike? - Yahoo Sports

At the risk of sounding like someone who believes in chemtrails and listens to Infowars religiously, I have a confession to make: More and more I’m convinced that juiced balls are causing a home run spike throughout baseball.

I am far from the only one. It’s hitters and pitchers and coaches and executives and even rational, cogent analysts who cannot find a reasonable explanation for the spike in home runs dating back to last August. The HR/FB rate – the percentage of fly balls that end ...

OTP 2016 May 2: The Anti-Moneyball Election

But these are not the campaigns that people will study, looking back at 2016. The surprises came from the Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump campaigns, which followed completely different models. They have broader, more emotional appeals to voters, rather than trying to slice the electorate into ever-narrowing segments (which have been the source for a generation of condescending consultant-speak: Bill Clinton’s soccer moms, George W. Bush’s security moms, and so on). They are running ...

The strange saga of Jose Reyes is nearing an end. But what then? - The Denver Post

“I’d like to know exactly what happened,” Monfort said. “It’s easy for us all to speculate on whatever happened. But until we really know, it’s hard. You’re dealing with a guy’s life.

“But if he did something wrong, he should pay for it.”

How many people don’t agree with his statement? The Commissioner’s Office will find that ascertaining exactly what happened will be difficult, if not impossible, when the witnesses don’t want to testify. ...Read More...

Exploring how MLB has turned Yankee Stadium against Yankees | New York Post

But what already is entrenched could not be changed. Carlos Beltran, Chase Headley, Brian McCann and Mark Teixeira are among the 30 lefty hitters shifted against most often (all shift stats provided by Baseball Info Solutions). No other team had four, and only the Mariners (Adam Lind, Kyle Seager and Seth Smith) had three — and that did not include Robinson Cano, whose ability to hit line-to-line would have kept him effective at Yankee Stadium even in the shift environment.

Replay catches Albert Pujols off bag and costs LA Angels in loss at Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas Somehow, what happened to the Angels and Albert Pujols on Friday night seems so obviously right and obviously wrong at the same time.

The key play in the Angels’ 4-2 loss to the Texas Rangers was an instant replay challenge, resulting in Pujols being called out for barely lifting his foot off the bag while Roughned Odor held a tag on him.

It snuffed out a promising rally, just before the Rangers turned the game around.
