(David) Wright to sit rest of season due to balky shoulder

NEW YORK—Back when David Wright initially jammed his left shoulder in June, sliding to second base on a routine play, he never could have envisioned the injury consuming his summer. He never could have imagined sitting at a late-night press conference in the bowels of Citi Field, as he did Tuesday, announcing that he will miss the rest of the season due to “persistent inflammation” in the joint.

“This season,” Wright said, “has left a sour taste in my mouth.”

With it now ...

Sports on Earth:Delessio:Picking Up the Pace

In other news, Sports on Earth is still alive.

The Atlantic League is experimenting with rules to improve the pace of play:

In the eighth inning of a game against the York Revolution on the first weekend in August, Brendan Harris, an infielder for the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks, was intentionally walked. The free pass got an ovation from Ducks fans at Bethpage Ballpark, but the cheers weren’t for the baserunner as much as for the method used to put him there.

Rather than having ...

Nationals down Braves to stretch division lead to 9, largest in DC franchise history

WASHINGTON—Mathematicians will say the Washington Nationals can’t clinch the NL East until next week. Practicality says they essentially wrapped it up Tuesday night when they sent nine hitters to the plate against Ervin Santana in the first inning of another win over the Atlanta Braves.

The Nationals beat their division nemesis for the second time in two nights, winning 6-4 to push their lead to nine games with 19 to play. Atlanta had been a thorn in Washington’s plans for about a year ...

GIF: Dodgers make three throwing errors on one play

The Dodgers jumped all over the Padres early in Monday night’s game (GameTracker), but Los Angeles gave two runs back in the sixth inning thanks to a trio of throwing errors. On one play.

Even the final throw back to home - though not an error technically - was screwed up.  Quite a display.  The Dodgers still won despite all this nonsense.

VIDEO: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 15, is huge, destroys baseballs

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has a familiar name, and the body/swing combination in the video below are pretty familiar as well. Check it out, keeping in mind that he’s only 15 years old—and if you want to zero in on just one swing to save time, I recommend jumping to the 1:25 mark:

Man, I hope he’s got the goods.  Who was more fun to have around than Vlad Guerrero?

Milwaukee Sentinel, September 9, 1914:

Only partly dressed, Ad Brennan, Chicago Federal pitcher, jumped from a moving train that was about to carry him through Buffalo on Tuesday. The porter forgot to call Brennan. He carried the remainder of his clothes in his flying leap from the train and used a convenient bush as a dressing room.

Man. Most people would perform feats of daring to leave Buffalo.

Anyway, the joke was on Brennan. He didn’t even pitch in that series.

ESPN: Stark: Sides close on collision rule clarity

Major League Baseball and the Players Association are nearing an agreement designed to “clarify” confusion over the new home plate collision rules, sources told ESPN on Monday, with an announcement possible as soon as Tuesday. [...]

Primarily, the clarification of Rule 7:13 would remind umpires that while the intent of the rule was to protect catchers from violent collisions at the plate, the wording was not intended to be interpreted so strictly that it would allow runners to be called safe ...

Leake concerned with longevity, not personal win-loss record

Leake, another face of Neolution.

“I’m like Bronson Aroryo always was,” he said. “I don’t really worry about the wins and losses. I’m more impressed with longetivity numbers than the immediate numbers.”

In his five years with the Reds, after coming directly from college to the Reds rotation, he is 52-30. More importantly to him, he pitched 192 innings last season and didn’t miss a starter.

“Making every start and throwing 200 innings is what I’d rather do every year than go out and win 15 or ...

mlb.com: 2015 regular season schedule revealed

Major League Baseball on Monday revealed the 2015 regular-season schedule, which will begin with the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball opener on April 5 (teams TBD) and then, by the following day, if there are no postponements, all 30 teams will have participated in traditional Opening Day games.

Cincinnati, which will host its first All-Star Game since 1988 and its record fifth overall, naturally will be one of those 15 host ballparks on that first Monday of action, when the Reds will face the ...

Kevin Towers’ replacement to help decide Kirk Gibson’s fate with Diamondbacks

Sabermetrically inclined general manager or entry-level student, what’s the difference?

La Russa intimated that the scouting department would get stronger if Towers were to remain and oversee it.

La Russa believes analytics and metrics can play an important role “before the game, but not during the game,” and sees it as an area the club can “beef up.” He said that might come in the form of a more sabermetrically inclined general manager. But it might not.

“It could be something that’s just ...

I’m not going to wake up and be like, ‘I’m going to play this year and then not anymore.’ To me, it’s going to be how things go through the season and how I feel, and then I’m going to be like, ‘Mama, it’s over.’ I’m going to let her know.”

Rock Island Argus, September 8, 1914:

The relative positions of the Boston and New York National league teams underwent no change as a result of yesterday’s games at Fenway park. Boston won in the morning, 5 to 4, and New York in the afternoon, 10 to 1. The largest crowds ever recorded in Boston at two baseball games in a single day attended.

10 Degrees: Why WAR doesn’t always add up

Do not consider the following a declaration of war on WAR as much as an invitation for its greatest adherents in the sabermetric community to practice what they preached to the mainstream media during baseball’s analytical revolution: Please do better.

During our Twitter back-and-forth, Cameron asked for a solution. The clear one seems to be wait for better data until weighing fielding numbers equally with batting ones, but WAR doesn’t exist that way, and it’s not going away. ...

[Freddie] Freeman Finishes At .135 Against Marlins

MIAMI — Freddie Freeman had a hit in each of his last five games against the Marlins, but the Braves All-Star first baseman still finished with an almost unfathomable .135 average (10-for-74) against them this season….

He has hit a combined .314 with 57 extra-base hits (16 homers) and 64 RBIs in 124 games against everyone else….

Probably not of interest to anyone who isn’t a Braves or Marlins fan, but falls under that always interesting category of “Curious Baseball Stats.”

With a first-inning double in tonight’s game against the Cardinals, his 48th of the season, Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy broke the doubles record for catchers, per ESPN Stats & Info on Twitter. Ivan Rodriguez held the record previously, doubling 47 times in 1996 though two of those doubles were hit as a DH. 41 of Lucroy’s 48 doubles have been hit when he has been in the lineup as a catcher (six at first base, one at DH)...

NY Times: The Man Who Spins Pinstripes Into Gold

Brandon Steiner’s mind was churning as he watched the groundskeepers carrying their rakes off the Yankee Stadium infield.

“I can sell those,” he said. “I can put a plaque on them and have Derek sign them.”

“Pre-Steiner, we had two sets of bases for the season, and we’d repaint them and put them back on the field,” ...
