SNY - Mets reportedly considering reunion with Lucas Duda

The Mets are considering a reunion with free agent 1B Lucas Duda, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Duda, 31, was traded by the Mets to the Rays last July 27 in exchange for RH reliever Drew Smith. He hit .217/.322/.496 with 30 HR in 126 games last season with the Mets and Rays

For his career—which has been spent enitrely with the Mets aside from the last two months of the 2017 season—Duda has hit .242/.340/.457 with 138 HR in eight seasons.

The Mets are reportedly in agreement with ...

New York Tribune, January 12, 1918:

The International League will be in the field in 1918, it was stated yesterday by a club owner of this Class AA organization. The circuit is not in such dire financial straits as was suspected when at the annual meeting…last month it was voted to cut former President Ed. Barrow’s salary from $7,500 to $2,500 a year.
...
The scheme to slash Barrow’s salary in such a scandalous manner was not prompted by economic necessity. It was done to intimate to Ed in no ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 1-11-2018

New York Tribune, January 11, 1918:

“Stuffy” McInnis, of the Philadelphia Americans, the last survivor of Connie Mack’s old champions, will be a member of the Boston Red Sox in 1918. The deal for his services was completed over the long distance telephone [yesterday].
...
[Red Sox] Manager Barry said…the deal for McInnis was held up because the Sox would not give up a player Connie Mack wanted, but that this angle was straightened out by telephone a few moments before the announcement of ...

Heyman | Red Sox And JD Martinez Remain In Stalemate

Six years at $30 million per? I’d rather see the Sox put that money toward getting another Manny.

Top free-agent slugger J.D. Martinez and the Boston Red Sox have been engaged in a staredown/stalemate for weeks. And judging by Martinez’s commitment to the cause, it may go on quite awhile longer.

Miami acquaintances of Martinez say he is willing to “hold out,” certainly into spring training, for what he believes should be his market value. The Red Sox have offered Martinez a five-year ...

Jay Bruce deal: Patience pays off again for Alderson and Mets

Bruce has returned to the Mets for three years and $39 million, an eminently reasonable deal for a 31-year-old-to-be who brings power and durability to an environment sorely in need of both.

Nowaday’s high price of mediocrity, I suppose, or the mehiest meh that ever mehed.

Heyman | Yankees Having Trouble Finding Taker For Ellsbury

The New York Yankees are said to be willing to pay at least half of Jacoby Ellsbury’s $22 million salary but are still having trouble stirring much trade interest at this point.

That could be because there are so many similar players still available on the free-agent market, though, and it’s possible they could find some takers later.

THT: The Boston Red Sox Are the MLB Draft Kings

Which team has accumulated the most “Future WAR” with its draft picks during the draft era while averaging the least advantageous spot on the board? Remarkably, the Boston Red Sox are the only ball club to amass over 2000 Future WAR while averaging the second-lowest picks in the draft. Only the New York Yankees have worked with a lower average pick, and they are 14th in total Future WAR.

Wrigleyville - Baseball Prospectus: COLLUSION BY ANY OTHER NAME WOULD SMELL AS FOUL

It’s not collusion. It’s sanity. It’s also the MLBPA making a very bad deal. Instead of focusing on a very small part of its membership, it should have been focusing on increasing money for a majority of its members.

So, when we see explicit reports by establishment voices like Ken Rosenthal assert that “teams are using a new playbook” when it comes to free agency, we should not be shy to critique such a system and those who perpetuate it. The evidence of collusion, or something ...

Sources: Jay Bruce returning to Mets on 3-year, $39M contract

With Bruce back in the fold, the Mets’ 2018 starting outfield is likely to consist of Yoenis Cespedes in left field, Michael Conforto in center and Bruce in right.

Conforto hit 27 home runs last season and made his first career All-Star team before suffering a dislocated shoulder in August and undergoing surgery to repair a torn posterior capsule. Although the Mets have said his rehab is going well, it’s questionable whether he’ll be ready by Opening Day.

Life of a scouting report: How the Cubs have streamlined an age-old process – The Athletic

A lot of good stuff at The Athletic recently. If you can get access at a discount, you should.

“Our scouts don’t travel to the draft,” Dorey said. “So it’s my job to really challenge analytic information we have if it doesn’t align with what our scouts are saying, and try to find the sweet spot there. I’m constantly trying to make sure that the voice of the scout doesn’t get lost in the entire profile of the player. And I think we’ve done a really good job of that, but it’s ...

“It’s going to be a new, revitalized me,” he said. “I want to prove that I’m worth it. I want to be prepared and be the leader I can be on the field. I know whatever team I do fit with, they’re going to get the best Todd Frazier they are ever going to have because I want to play better. I want to get my average up. I have a ...

This strikes me as a little short on the Phillies side.

MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince proposed a trade that might work for both the Phillies and the Marlins: Nick Williams, Mickey Moniak, and Jorge Alfaro for Yelich.

Washington Evening Star, January 9, 1918:

Barney Dreyfuss, president of the Pittsburgh National League Base Ball Club, announced today that arrangements had been completed whereby Mamaux, Ward and Grimes are to go to the Brooklyn National League club in exchange for Stengel and Cutshaw.

Two of the five players in the trade wound up in the Hall of Fame, though the Old Perfessor got in as a manager.

Dave Dombrowski’s reputation, autonomy and the pursuit of JD Martinez

What’s your team’s goal? Do you want short bursts of success or do you want sustained success? Do you want to be the Braves of the 90s or Royals of the recent past?

Small markets may be forced to think of smaller windows of opportunity. Big markets can plan for sustained success. I’d rather have the Red Sox working similarly to the current Dodgers than Ilitch’s Tigers. I like J.D. Martinez. I don’t like him enough to see the Sox go beyond five years. (I’d prefer four with a higher AAV ...

Rosenthal: Many factors contributing to historically slow free agent market – The Athletic

Ken, Ken, Ken. Teams will spend money. The players will get signed. Maybe, though, the Players Association might want some new leadership. The Luxury Tax system they agreed to gives the big markets good reason to be frugal this year. Smart management is only a problem for agents who depend on emotionally-charged decision-making.

An MLB official dismissed any suggestion of collusion, saying clubs are so secretive, they barely communicate with the commissioner’s office during free agency, much ...

Atlanta/Southeast BBTF meet up

From the depths of the much maligned, dreaded, and oft times avoided OTP thread has sprung forth the idea that we have a quorum of ATL and ATL-adjacent Primates to justify a meet up. (We can’t field two softball teams yet.) We’re banging around locations in the city for drinks, dinner and shenanigans now. The date will on or around Feb 12.
