Major League Baseball retaliates with surprise drug tests for protesting Dominican prospects

Last week, in protest of Major League Baseball’s plan to implement an international amateur draft, Dominican prospects and their trainers boycotted an annual MLB showcase event. This forced Major League Baseball to cancel the workout, after briefly considering bringing in replacement players (because idiots will never learn).

This week, just by coincidence, Baseball America’s Ben Badler (who is all over this story, and who you should follow) reports that Major League Baseball has called ...

Tech me out to the ballgame: Replay, ‘K-Zones’ causing major league headaches

The philosophy of replay was ostensibly simple: Get the call right. Yet during a season in which time of game is a priority, baseball is dealing with an unintended consequence of replay: the spirit of replay on second-base tag plays. Former managers Joe Torre and Jim Leyland, both of whom work in the commissioner’s office, are vexed that replay has resulted in nitpicking.

“I think this is an example of where the technology is too good,” Leyland said, “Where, in this case, we’re kind of victims ...

With or without Cubs clinching Series, Ricketts family has $2B ballclub

Its about time the Ricketts family caught a break.

And now, as if on cue, the team’s breakthrough into the World Series after a 71-year drought promises to pump up those revenues and boost the franchise’s value beyond the already stunning $2.2 billion that Forbes estimated this year. And that estimate, for those counting, does not include Wrigley Field and other assets tied to the 2009 purchase price.

Regardless of what happens in the World Series, experts say, the Ricketts family has won ...

Maddon, Francona punching tickets to Cooperstown?

One of the subplots of this World Series that has a million of them is the legacies of Terry Francona and Joe Maddon. They are regarded as two of the best managers in the game today, and both have fun personalities in an era when many managers are look-alike, think-alike robots who rarely say anything too interesting and avoid controversy like those brussels sprouts sitting in your fridge for the past four months.

Projected Arbitration Salaries For 2017 - MLB Trade Rumors

As explained here, Matt Swartz and MLB Trade Rumors have developed an accurate model to project arbitration salaries.  This is the sixth year we’ve done these projections, and I’m proud to present the results for 2017.  The number in parentheses next to each player is his Major League service time (Years.Days) through 2016 (172 days constitutes a full year of Major League service, per the collective bargaining agreement).

The Super Two cutoff will be 2.131. Service time data in this post ...

Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians stars repping Puerto Rico in World Series

An Indians-Cubs World Series is more than a meeting of two franchises in the midst of long title droughts—it’s also the first meeting in the Fall Classic of three ballplayers born in Puerto Rico, the Cubs’ Javier Baez and the Indians’ Francisco Lindor and Roberto Perez. Lindor and Baez are two of the brightest young players in the game—Lindor was an All Star this year, and Baez has been the postseason’s breakout star—and both credit Perez as a role model (at 27, he’s the elder statesman; Baez ...

The World Series beat the NFL in the ratings last night

Austin Karp of SportsBusiness Journal reports that Game Five of the World Series between the Indians and Cubs beat the regular-season Eagles-Cowboys Sunday Night Football game in the ratings. Pretty decisively too: the Cubs and Indians generated a 15.3 rating. The Eagles-Cowboys: 11.6. It’s the first time a World Series game has beat the Sunday Night Football rating head-to-head since 2011.

There are a lot of people who have sent me this info and have asked me to write a “Hey, maybe ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-31-2016

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, October 31, 1916:

Larry McLean is now an actor. The once sky-scraping catcher has been filmed as the high priest in a Chinese drama. Larry says every time the director tells him to put a stern look on his face he thinks of the National League umpires, and the pictures show him sad enough to make an audience weep.

Whatever film it was, it appears to have been lost to the ages as McLean isn’t listed in IMDB.

Just to the left of the McLean story is an article about Elmer ...

OTP 2016 October 31: Stepping Up to the Plate: A Brief History of Baseball Players in Politics

South of the United States, players like Bobby Avila, Aurelio Lopez, Raul Mondesi, Magglio Ordonez and Melido Perez became involved in politics in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela. It’s a similar story for several Japanese baseball players too.

But success in the baseball stadium does not guarantee victory in the political arena. Walter “Big Train” Johnson, the Hall-of-Fame pitcher for the Washington Senators, lost a race for U.S. Congress for the GOP in 1940 when he ...

The perfect play that helped save the Cubs’ season took only 3 seconds

This was a shocker.

“Lester gets rid of the ball quickly. Rossy has a quick release, a strong, accurate arm. Baez is the best guy I’ve ever seen putting quick tag on a guy,” said Cubs third-base coach Gary Jones, who works with the team’s infielders. “It’s a combination of everything coming together. If all three of those things don’t happen, we don’t get him. They work in tandem, and that’s the result you get.”

If the Indians are to pop champagne again in 2016, they’ll do so from Cleveland’s friendly confines | cleveland.com

The bright side for the Indians.

The last century of Cleveland sports has produced only a handful of major professional championships.

Only the 1920 Indians and the 1964 Browns secured the title with Lake Erie nearby. And in a year in which Cleveland sports have morphed from sorry to spectacular—the Browns and their unrelenting futility aside—it would be appropriate for the Indians to cap 2016 with an in-town celebration for the ages.

Jason Heyward got his hits in Game 3.

The first step on the road back, to quote Miguel Montero, could be a seeing-eye single delivered at the right time in Game 5. No team that has hit like this Cubs team stays cold forever.

Fox’s “Commercial-Free Break” During the World Series Could be a Win For Everyone

Though we’re all conditioned to expect a barrage of ads following the third out of any frame, Fox is experimenting with a new model. During Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday, the network declined to go to a break in the middle of the third inning, instead cutting to its studio team….

If a sponsored studio hit allows Fox to recover anywhere close to the income it loses from forgoing a commercial break, this is a win for everyone.

Commercial breaks invite viewers to change the channel, ...

Fernandez had a blood-alcohol content level of 0.147, well above the legal limit of .08. Other fluids in his body ...

Oakland A’s, Smashmouth in Twitter war

Days after San Jose band Smashmouth used its Twitter account to defend 49ers general manager Trent Baalke from criticism, the band was back at it again Friday — and this time, the target of the band’s ire, the Oakland A’s, fired back.

Before it was over, A’s pitcher Sean Doolittle had jumped in to try to keep the peace, but the “All Star” performers and the 1989 World Series champions were too busy taking their swings to back down.

The tweet tiff began with a fairly innocent ...

Why this is Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez’s most important offseason | The Seattle Times

It’s difficult when a king has to abdicate his thrown throne.

Hernandez was throwing the bulk of his pitches low and away, off the plate in hopes of hitters chasing and avoiding solid contact. When he was able to command his pitches to the corners of the plate, that approach was effective. But the mechanical issues and meandering command from start to start wouldn’t allow him to maintain that success. Hitters recognized it.

“He pigeon-holed himself to one spot of the strike zone much more ...
