Buck gives Ubaldo the boot to the bullpen as Gallardo returns from the DL.
As Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez struggled through May and slumped to the status of, statistically, the worst starting pitcher in the majors, his job remained his because the answer to any questions about a replacement was a question of its own: “Who else?”
Manager Buck Showalter on Tuesday finally had an answer. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo will return from the disabled list Saturday and start in Jimenez’s place ...

Beginning this morning, all open seats to Friday’s Rays-San Francisco Giants 7:10 p.m. game at Tropicana Field will be available for $5 with 100 percent of proceeds benefitting the Pulse Victims Fund (gofundme.com/PulseVictimsFund), set up for the families of the victims.
Also planned for Friday:
The Nationals placed right-hander Jonathan Papelbon on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to Monday, with a right intercostal strain.
Is this supposed to bring people in or keep them away? Tip: Dan is a big hugger.
In addition to 10 FanGraphs-affiliated folks, writers from ESPN, FiveThirtyEight, Sports Illustrated and Baseball Prospectus will be in attendance. Seven of these attendees—Dave Cameron, Carson Cistulli, Dan Szymborski, Ben Lindbergh, Jonah Keri, Emma Span and Meg Rowley—will participate in a sold-out “VIP Q and A pregame panel.” Tickets to the Statgeek Picnic, which will be attended by all the guests, are still ...
This doesn’t sound promising.
“I don’t know, it’s hard to say,” Holt said when asked when he might begin a rehab assignment. “I wish I could. It’s been frustrating for me. Some days I feel good. Some days I won’t feel as good.”
The Red Sox already have begun considering trade options as they prepare to look toward the latter part of the season, and left field is a position that is still without a left-handed-hitting complement to the right-handed Chris Young. Holt could negate ...

Is it really panic time? Mets fans should be happy Harper isn’t GM. Travis is scheduled to come back in less than a week.
Yes, Travis d’Arnaud is on his way back from his shoulder injury, and he could provide some of the much-needed pop for the Mets’ offense.
But it’s clear that gambling on d’Arnaud staying healthy for months at a time is a longshot at best, especially now that he has had a problem with his throwing shoulder in addition to various other injuries.
As it is, d’Arnaud ...
Milwaukee Journal, June 14, 1916:
Ed Walsh came back at Comiskey park yesterday to say farewell to the game, of which he was one of the most brilliant ornaments. The iron man of former seasons lasted less than three tinnings, and although he tried to look fate squarely in the face when he walked from the box to give way to Reb Russell, it was noticed that his strong right hand made a motion as if to brush away a tear.
It was Walsh’s final start as a White Sock. He made a relief appearance in ...Read More...
I’m referring instead to the core principle with which the Cubs have been trying to build a championship roster since team president Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer were hired after the 2011 season, a principle that distinguishes this rebuilding project from almost every other one in baseball history: They’re building an offense from within and a pitching staff from spare parts.
This flies in the face of more than a century of conventional baseball wisdom, which states that (1) ...

That’s a pretty nice discount.
The Reds have reached an agreement with No. 2 overall draft pick Nick Senzel and will sign the Tennessee third baseman for a $6.2MM bonus later today, reports MLB.com’s Jim Callis (on Twitter). The second pick came with a value of $7,762,900 this season, meaning that Cincinnati will save $1,562,900 on the pick. That money can be reallocated to other picks further down the team’s draft board.

Cuban infielder Yulieski Gurriel has been declared a free agent and can sign with any Major League team, a source told MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez.
An American (un?)success story.
It was there that a Brewers scout (re)discovered Winkelsas’ arm, which the pitcher claimed was restored by hauling garbage cans.
New York Mets manager Terry Collins will remain hospitalized overnight in Milwaukee after requiring medical attention less than 30 minutes before Sunday’s first pitch against the Brewers.
Collins complained of feeling ill, but had improved by the time he departed Miller Park for Froedtert Hospital, assistant general manager John Ricco said.
The 67-year-old Collins, the oldest manager in the majors, departed the clubhouse without requiring assistance.

Why would Baez be a non-starter?
Kyle Schwarber, Javy Baez and top catching prospect Willson Contreras are expected to be non-starters in talks. But the Cubs have a handful of other intriguing young prospects (and possibly Jorge Soler) who could be made available.

This overestimates Clayton’s value. Teams don’t pay $8 million per win. They pay $8 million per win on the free agent market.
Clayton Kershaw, even at $32 million, is a giant bargain. And this goes well beyond the raw amazement he generates, though any opportunity to showcase Kershaw’s line is one gladly taken. Look at this. It’s like fine art sketched out in number form: 100 2/3 IP, 59 H, 18 R, 17 ER, 6 BB, 122 K, 1.52 ERA. That belongs in the MoMA.
So, how does that translate to a bargain? ...

The Rays feel they have the answer to their bullpen woes: Blake Snell.
Actually, it’s the domino effect of adding their top prospect to the rotation, which they will do Thursday when the left-handed rookie is scheduled to make his second big-league start. Snell is needed because Matt Andriese is headed to the bullpen to assume to role Erasmo Ramirez played earlier this season — a pitcher who can get outs and get a lot of them.

Pittsburgh Press, June 13, 1916:
Babe Ruth of the Redsox is some athlete. He is not only a good pitcher, but can produce at the bat. He was used as a pinch hitter yesterday and made good with a home run.
Man, it’s too bad pitchers only make 38-40 starts per year. I guess we’ll never see what Ruth could do if he got 500 at bats. He could hit 15 or 20 home runs in a season!
That looked like it hurt. (Sorry, you’ll have to click the link because I can’t see any way to embed the video.)
Juan Uribe had the Most Ridiculous play Sunday when he was stretchered off the field after he tried to field a 106 mph ground ball from Mike Trout that ended up hitting his groin.

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, who was Dayton’s mayor when Voinovich was governor, said that Voinovich’s “support for projects like the baseball stadium, the Schuster Center and RiverScape MetroPark were essential and he intervened to ensure that Dayton was identified as a destination along I-70. His work in the U.S. Senate was incredibly important for sustaining Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. My prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, said ...Read More...
