OTP 2016 July 11: Power player interns with Congressman Raul Ruiz by day

It’s a rite of passage for a United States president to throw out the first pitch in a Major League Baseball game at least once during his tenure. Other than that, though, politics and baseball don’t often mix. That’s what makes the summer schedule of Palm Springs Power relief pitcher Alex Strizak unusual.

By night, Strizak is a relief pitcher for the Palm Springs Power. By day, he is an intern working for U.S. Rep. Raul Ruiz (D-Palm Desert).

Drellich: Three trades in, Dave Dombrowski still has holes to fill | Boston Herald

The Red Sox aren’t making a big deal.

“You’ve got to start with one,” Dombrowski said of how many starters he seeks. “I hope we get one. It’s not an easy starting pitching market out there. There’s a lot of clubs looking for starting pitching and there’s not a lot of starting pitchers out there.

“You can get starting pitching. I assure you I can pick up the phone and get a starting pitcher. But is it a starting pitcher that helps you? So that’s sort of the key there.”

What ...

Here’s why the Mets have few options for big deals at deadline - NY Daily News

All in? They shouldn’t be all in this year.

It’s tricky because they still enough top-of-the-rotation pitching, as long as Syndergaard proves to be OK, to try to win a championship, and this is a year when they should be all-in, considering that Yoenis Cespedes figures to invoke his opt-out clause and become a free agent, along with Neil Walker.

New York Post: Page Six: Derek Jeter Marries Hannah Davis

Breaking News:

Derek Jeter is finally a married man. The 42-year-old former New York Yankees captain married model Hannah Davis, 26, on Saturday. And rather than throw a big showbiz wedding, the couple chose to exchange their vows in a small and intimate ceremony with only close friends and family in Napa, Calif.

The ceremony took place outside at the picturesque Meadowood resort in Napa, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit beauty Davis walked down the aisle in a stunning, custom-made Vera Wang ...

Washington Post: Tom Boswell: Nationals, Mets Take Far Different Approaches In Care Of Young Arms

Boz examines pitching philosophies:

The Nats put the arms of Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman, now a Tiger, ahead of short-term considerations. Those two are guaranteed to make more than $340 million in their careers. All five of the current young Mets starters combined, including Wheeler, are assured 1/30th of that. Is that exploitation? Do the Mets want to “win now” too much? Or the Nats too little?

Strasburg is 12-0, but it’ll take a few years to see how this turns out.

FOX: Facing possible lifetime ban, Cody Stanley is living every player’s nightmare

Does it make sense that a player suspended for performance-enhancing drugs would use the same substance again while serving his penalty?

Does it make sense that the player would commit a third violation and invite a lifetime ban just weeks before he was due to appeal?

Those are the questions that free-agent catcher Cody Stanley is asking — and he said that his inability to find suitable answers makes him fear for his fellow players.

Jake Arrieta in the Body Issue

ESPN’s Body Issue is out again.  Remember that the shots, while really impressive and showing the dynamism of athletic bodies from across the sports universe, are still of naked people and NSFW.

Arrieta’s are some of the best of the bunch, but Vince Wilfork curled into a ball of potential energy looks like goddamned Atlas and I’m pretty sure I’d drown if I tried carrying a rock across the bottom of the ocean like Courtney Conlogue is doing here.

Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard injuries make bad day even worse for Mets | Newsday

There are bad days, and then there are the stomach-turning, waking-nightmare, crawl-under-the-bed-type days that the Mets experienced yesterday.

How terrible was it? Put it this way: Losing Matt Harvey to season-ending surgery was the least of their problems.

Stunning, but true. By the time Friday night’s game against the Nationals began, the Mets already were past the grieving process with Harvey. Little did they realize that saying goodbye to Harvey until 2017 was merely the start. Things ...

Quantifying Pitcher Command – The Hardball Times

We begin today’s story with MARS.

Not the delicious candy bar that sticks to your teeth; nor the planet that can grow Matt Damon’s potatoes. Rather, it is Multi-variate Adaptive Regression Splines, or MARS for short. MARS is a trademarked term, so the R or Python implementation is usually referred to as “earth.” Essentially, the MARS approach to regression improves upon basic multiple linear regression in three ways:

It breaks apart each regression line into multiple formulae (for ...

Red Sox acquire Brad Ziegler from D-backs | MLB.com

Several hours after Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel revealed discomfort in his left knee, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made a significant move to fortify the bullpen, adding righty reliever Brad Ziegler in a trade with the D-backs.

To acquire a pitcher who has 81 career saves, including 18 this season, the Red Sox parted with two Minor League players: Right-hander Jose Almonte and infielder Luis Alejandro Basabe.

McShane: Bartolo Colon named to National League All-Star team

For pinch-hitting duties, right?

Mets starting pitcher Bartolo Colon has been named to the National League All-Star team. The 43-year-old takes the place of Madison Bumgarner. This will be Colon’s fourth All-Star appearance and first since 2013, when he made the game as a member of the Oakland A’s.

Aaron Hill provides depth for Red Sox

Not a blockbuster but hopefully he can help out a third. It’s not a big move but they didn’t really give up much.

The Red Sox kicked off their midyear process of filling needs, dealing for Brewers second baseman/third baseman Aaron Hill in exchange for Triple A righthander Aaron Wilkerson and High A second baseman Wendell Rijo.

Trea Turner to join Nationals in New York - The Washington Post

He’s been getting some time in centerfield.

Trea Turner is on his way to New York, according to a person with direct knowledge of the situation. It is unclear what move might be made to clear space for him on the Nationals’ active roster, though with Ryan Zimmerman ailing from some as-yet unidentified trouble and an already short bench after Michael A. Taylor was sent down to make room for Jonathan Papelbon, the Nationals need right-handed reinforcements.

Here are the current MLB stadiums that have never hosted an All-Star Game:

Citizens Bank Ballpark, Philadelphia
SunTrust Park, Atlanta (opening next year)
Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg
Yankee Stadium, New York (the new one, of course)

There are also five active stadiums that haven’t hosted the game in more than 20 years:

Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles (1980)
Oakland Coliseum, Oakland (1987)
Wrigley Field, Chicago (1990)
Rogers Centre, Toronto (1991)
Camden Yards, Baltimore (1993)

Milwaukee Journal, July 8, 1916:

Walter B. Shive yelled down to “Wild Bill,” telling the Yank manager something about his early history. Bill was too busy with his managerial duties at the time to climb to the second pavilion, so called for his pinch hitter to ...

The Mets need their Dark Knight | SNY

Yesterday, the Mets announced that Harvey has been put on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder discomfort, which sources say could be thoracic outlet syndrome, according to Newsday’s David Lennon.

In surveying people the last 12 hours—be it insiders, media, fans, etc.—I see people split 50-50 on whether they think this is a legit injury or just a cover to get Harvey two weeks away from the team.

The Mets will hopefully make an official announcement today about Harvey’s status. In the ...

BP’s midseason prospect Top 50.

1. J.P. Crawford, SS, Philadelphia Phillies
Why He’ll Succeed: He has the broadest base of skills in the minors, and one of those skills is plus defense at shortstop. Couple that with a strong hit tool and approach, note the double-digit home run potential, and you may be looking at a perennial all-star at shortstop.

Why He Might Fail: Crawford hasn’t hit as much against upper-minors competition as you’d like to see from your top prospect, the glove and ...

Dusty Baker Says Nats Fans Could Be More Boisterous

“Some of the guys on the team wish our fans were a little more boisterous and crazy. A little bit like we see in different stadiums when we’re on the road. We also realize that a lot of our fans are new Nationals fans. A whole bunch of them were Cubs and Mets [fans], wherever they come from. That’s the dynamics of D.C., which you realize. Thus far, each sub-committee has convened twice with the Expansion Era voting in 2010 and 2013, the Golden Era voting in 2011 and 2014, and the Pre-Integration Era voting in 2012 and 2015.  However, in its short history the Era Committee process has drawn a fair share of criticism for a variety of reasons and with December’s Pre-Integration Era vote representing two full cycles under the current format it is likely that the Hall of Fame board members will review and possibly modify to the ...
