Week 1, rave reviews. Clay Buchholz at the top of his game, newly minted Rick Porcello with a strong debut marred by one bad pitch, Justin Masterson triumphantly returning, Wade Miley battling the Bombers and Joe Kelly dazzling them.
Second go-round, not so much: Only Porcello so far this week has managed to complete five innings. Buchholz was hit with a seven-spot in the first inning Sunday night in New York and gave up 10 runs (9 earned) in 3⅓ innings in the Bronx. Masterson was gone with ...
Alienated enough of their dwindling fan base yet?
It’s not out of the question. It’s not crazy. Certain aspects of a Hamilton-back-to-Texas deal make a lot of sense.
I feel like Hamilton would be on the field enough, motivated enough that he would bring some punch to this team. And he would at least provide entertainment. That’s more than you can expect from most of this current Rangers’ outfield.
Why should they trade for him? Apparently Tim Cowlinshaw thinks the Rangers haven’t ...Read More...
The Royals have called up outfielder Terrance Gore from AA Northwest Arkansas, according to 610 Sports, to replace outfielder Alex Rios on the roster. Rios will be placed on the 15-day disabled list and will likely miss at least a month with a broken left pinky finger.

Right-hander Carlos Carrasco was hit in the face in the first inning by a line drive off the bat of Melky Cabrera and had to be taken off the field on a motorized stretcher.
Carrasco suffered a bruised jaw, but X-rays at Lutheran Medical Center showed no signs of a concussion or head injury. It is not known how many starts Carrasco will miss.
Scary moment in last night’s Indians game. It looks like Carrasco is going to be OK - if so, he’s a very lucky man.
Of course, this set-up forced them to put Hanley Ramirez at 3B last night.
This combination of skills is the first, and biggest part of why the Boston Red Sox are starting the season with an unorthodox bench. I took a survey of all 30 teams on RosterResource.com, and Boston appears as one of two teams that run the same guy out as the team’s only bench shortstop AND the team’s only bench third baseman AND the team’s only bench center fielder (along with the Indians and Mike Aviles).

Pittsburgh Press, April 15, 1915:
[Columbus, Ohio] City employees will be permitted to see the opening game of the season at Neil park today without the loss of salary. City council Monday night, by a vote of 14 to 2, declared a half holiday for this afternoon, which will give all of Columbus’ employees a chance to get in the Hulswitt parade.
“Hulswitt” being Rudy Hulswitt, the manager of the Columbus Senators. This was about the only fun Columbus baseball fans had that year; the 1915 Sens went ...Read More...
Has anyone reported on the specific language in Hamilton’s contract?
Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio reported Wednesday that Hamilton’s agent, Michael Moye, told teams involved in the free-agent bidding that the player would allow protective language if he received the right deal.
Moreno said at the time of the signing that Hamilton’s deal included no such language. But it turns out that the owner indeed tried to guard against a relapse by Hamilton, fully aware of the player’s ...

Is he really suggesting Grady Sizemore and Jeff Francoeur aren’t long-term solutions in Philly?
I’m very pro-bobblehead. I got two last season and I’m set to pick up another three at Fenway this year!

How is this delivery legal? He jumps ahead, regains balance, then releases the pitch. It’s the middle step which looks illegal to me. Does MLB really want to encourage more pitchers to try this delivery?

A lot of stuff happened in yesterday’s Mets game.
Apparenty, the Wilpons don’t want to be late on the next round of bank payments.
“Secondary considerations” was how Mets GM Sandy Alderson last month characterized the team’s decision to have Matt Harvey start the third game of this season at Washington, and subsequently, the second home game at Citi Field, instead of Opening Day at either stadium.
Well, that second home game was Tuesday night. And Harvey didn’t disappoint, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings while striking ...

I MOCK this draft! MOCK IT!
1. Arizona Diamondbacks – Dillon Tate, RHP, UC Santa Barbara
Tate was number one last time and he has done nothing to change that. If anything, there is less competition now then there was a month ago. This pick would appear to be down to Tate or Rodgers. There is an outside chance with the Diamondbacks could go off board and decide to try and spread out their large bonus over multiple picks….
2. Houston Astros – Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary HS (FL)
Kris Bryant and Joey Gallo have more in common than their prodigious power.
“The biggest piece of advice, especially as a kid, is just to enjoy it,” Gallo said. “I know it’s cliché, but just to have fun. Growing up—when you start getting that pressure that you’re going to get drafted and colleges—you kind of lose the fun in the game and why you played it in the first place. I’ve gotten it back now and I really enjoy playing it. But in high school, it was tough having scouts at every game. I ...
Maddon and Epstein both said before the game they weren’t concerned about Lester’s move becoming an issue. Maybe, but now Lester’s “dead arm” issue from spring training has led to a poor start to his Cubs career.
“It might take him a little while to get into a good routine yet, but I have no doubts he will,” Epstein said.

I’m always on the lookout for pitchers with the potential to have a jump in performance. Jimmy Nelson season looks promising.

Pittsburgh Press, April 14, 1915:
A few lines from the Pacific coast chronicle the death of one of the greatest ball players the game has known. His skin happened to be black and he never shone in the majors, however. He was [Bill] Monroe, an infielder, who went to the coast with Rube Foster’s negro team…Those who have seen him play say he was a Lajoie and a Wagner combined.
I was stunned to learn that Monroe isn’t in the Hall of Fame. That’s a traveshamockery.
Monroe was indeed one heck of a ...Read More...
The Harvey Effect has definitely impacted the Citi Field ticket sales, as the attendance for Tuesday’s game is expected to be near 40,000. Monday’s home opener was the second largest crowd at Citi Field (43,947) behind the 2013 All-Star Game. Once fans figured out how the rotation would unfold on the team’s 10-game homestand, tickets for Harvey’s starts have spiked. The attendance for his scheduled Sunday start is expected to be near 40,000 as well.

In which a Reddit user discusses his theory that Mike Trout really wants to be a meteorologist.
I developed this theory by spending a day looking through all of Trout’s photos on Twitter ... and I saw a pattern start to form. I saw the Trout tweeted about weather rather often, and has been for a while.
Another user notes that on Twitter “Trout follows 17 different meteorologists and 20+ weather related accounts.”

Wilmington could be the home of a Double-A Eastern League franchise as early as 2016, a possibility revealed earlier this month because of a legal matter involving the potential sale of the Binghamton Mets.
The late Matt Minker, who founded the Blue Rocks and built Frawley Stadium for their 1993 rebirth, long envisioned Wilmington’s location and metropolitan population as ideal for an Eastern League franchise. He nearly secured one for a move several years before his death in 2007.
Now his ...
