Two video replays were botched in the Dbacks-Angels game last night | HardballTalk

I’m really tired of replay. It slows the game down. Managers often ask for looks when the result isn’t very close. At the same time replay officials often get the calls wrong.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-16-2015

Milwaukee Sentinel, Page 5 of linked newspaper, June 16, 1915:

[Jack] Nabors, a local pitcher in the Georgia-Alabama league, established what is regarded as a new record in organizaed baseball [in Newman, Georgia] Tuesday by pitching against the Tallageda [sic] club for thirteen innings without giving a hit or base on balls. Only forty men faced Nabors, who won his game, 1 to 0.

Well, golllllllleee. That was a heck of a performance.

You’d think a pitcher like that would go on to a successful ...

A tough day for the Yanks yields sobering Tanaka lesson | New York Post

Even after these lousy results, the Yankees remained third in the AL with 288 runs scored. It’s rather mind-blowing to look at the many currently below-average bats in the Yankees’ lineup — Carlos Beltran, Stephen Drew, Didi Gregorius and Chase Headley, plus the fill-ins for the injured Jacoby Ellsbury — and then realize that the Yankees stand in serious contention BECAUSE of their offense, not despite it.

Hamilton thinks about giving up switch-hitting

You can’t? Somebody should tell Pablo and Shane.

“It’s on my mind all the time,” he said. “Here lately, a bunch of guys have done it. Pablo (Sandoval) did it. Shane Victorino did it. It’s something you can’t do in the middle of the season. You can’t go from being left-hander to facing righty-on-righty. You can’t do it in the middle of the season.

“But it’s something I’ve really been thinking about to do. I’m starting to feel a little more comfortable left-handed. It’s something I’ve got to keep ...

Seven straight Red Sox losses, but not a negative word here - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

The press and fans have every right to complain. Of course, although it might feel good to vent, it doesn’t mean the venting actually does anything to improve the team’s chances.

Byron Buxton’s first MLB hit was a triple because of course it was | MLB.com

According to Statcast, his speed topped out at 21.39 mph, which is A) fast enough to get you pulled over in a Massachusetts school zone and B) .41 miles faster than Billy Hamilton’s last triple, hit on May 13 against the Braves and maxing out at 20.98 mph. It’s even faster than Jarrod Dyson’s triple on May 10, which clocked in at 21.03 mph.

San Diego Padres likely looking for sizzle in Bud Black’s successor | FOX Sports

So, what if the Dodgers’ Joc Pederson had not made that amazing catch on a potential game-winning hit by the Padres’ Justin Upton with two on and two outs in the ninth on Sunday?
Would a dramatic victory and series triumph over the rival Dodgers have mattered to the Padres’ itchy ownership? Or would they have just gone ahead and fired Bud Black as manager anyway?

NY Daily News:  Mets designate pitcher Dillon Gee for assignment

With Gee seemingly out of options, the Mets announced Friday he would make a spot start against the Braves on Sunday. Gee, looking to prove he belonged in the rotation, was crushed and the Mets DFA’d him Monday.

In six seasons with the Mets, Gee went 40-37 with a 4.03 ERA.

Tampa Bay Rays Looking To New Tech To Study Pitching

But does it measure The Will to Win?

So, it comes with little surprise that the Rays and markerless bio-mechanics company KinaTrax have announced a deal that will allow the Rays to keep track of their pitchers’ form. The two organizations released a statement today, saying that KinaTrax will install a software-hardware product suite in Tropicana Field for use in the 2015 MLB season.

The system will be able to track a pitcher’s mechanics in real-time during a game. It does not use any sort ...

3 reminders that long extensions for young players are still risky

Jedd Gyorko

He was a 24-year-old rookie middle infielder who hit 23 homers while playing half his games in Petco Park. How do you not want to lock that guy up? The only real question is when to stop offering him more and more years on the extension. He had a 113 OPS+ when he was 24, which meant it was reasonable to expect even more from him as he entered his prime, and that even more would mean he would be a perennial All-Star.

Instead, he was one of the worst everyday players in baseball ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-15-2015

Pittsburgh Press, June 15, 1915:

Keliher, first baseman of the Worcester team, had the distinction of playing through yesterday’s New England league game with Fitchburg without a putout, assist or error.

As of May 2007, 24 MLB first basemen had played an entire game without a fielding chance. That makes it just slightly more common than a perfect game, which has occurred 23 times in MLB history.

A-Rod redirects Yankees offer to donate HR bonus money - NY Daily News

Cost of lawyers and a lot of negative publicity. What a mess.

It is believed the only reason the Yankees made any suggestion to settle with a charity donation was because of the enormous cost of litigating the case — which would entail bringing in the U.S. Attorney’s office for the testimony A-Rod gave them in the Biogenesis case, along with the many witnesses in that case.

Regardless, if it’s war he wants with them again, the Yankees are said to be confident they will win it and prepared ...

Chris Sale dominant again with 12 K’s, but Rays win to complete sweep

At the least, some fine company.

Sale was the third pitcher since data is available to strike out 12 in four consecutive starts. Martinez did it in 2001 (he had a streak of five in ’99) to go with a four-game streak in 1997. Randy Johnson strung together five straight of 12 or more in 1998. This was Sale’s 24th game with 10 or more, in 97 starts.

“The maturity of Chris Sale from this year to last year is going through the roof, just on and off the field,” Parent said. “It seems like ...

Economics take toll on talent pool in MLB | TribLIVE

“We like two-sport athletes, and we absolutely covet three-sport athletes,” General Manager Neal Huntington said. “We think they are a much better athlete. We believe in our developmental system. We feel there is a little bit more ceiling.”

Jacoby Jones, a third-round pick in 2013, played outfield and second base at LSU. But the former prep football player has played shortstop in the Pirates’ system.

“The mobility, agility stuff, quick short-yardage stuff,” Jones said of football ...

New York Mets promote Virgin Islands native Akeel Morris

Gee will be unavailable for a few days after starting Sunday’s game. Bobby Parnell will not be asked to work a third straight day on Monday as he returns from Tommy John surgery. And Sean Gilmartin’s availability for the series opener against the Jays also is questionable since he logged two innings on Sunday.

So Morris—a 10th-round pick in 2010—appears a very brief safety net and an appropriate choice because he already is on the 40-man roster and within relative proximity.

Vic Black, also ...

Kenny: The end of FIP as we know it

Professor Jon Heyman comments: “We’re going to have to sit shiva.”

What McCracken found became the foundation for how we would understand pitching. There is a wild variance in the batted ball. Defense and luck are huge components in run prevention. What was known as the “peripherals,” the strikeouts and walks, would’ve been better known as the “essentials.” For the past 14 years, you could reliably find out how good an outing was by looking at a pitcher’s strikeouts and walks.

This ...

Cubs Den: The Starlin Castro Dilemma

This article sums up my feelings on Starlin Castro quite nicely.  To wit:

It would almost seem unfair. After five years of playing with trash and for nothing, to be jettisoned at the very first period of success. There is no room for sentimentality in sports, and especially with this era for the Cubs, of course. Sentimentality is partly why the Cubs ended up in the mess that they did.

...

I don’t want the Cubs to keep Starlin for the sake of it. I want Starlin to make himself kept.

It didn’t impact his pitching.

All while still recovering from an intense morning of HBO binge-watching.

“I watched the last episode of ‘Game Of Thrones’ today and I was really drained,” Wilson said. “It was very up and down. I was very worried it wasn’t going to turn out well for Daenerys Targaryen. My wife and I are big fans of her. Part of my routine is to spend time with the wife and the dogs. Usually it relaxes me, but today it was like, ‘Oh man.’”
