In event of rebuild, White Sox trade pieces go beyond Chris Sale - Chicago Tribune

“You can’t say you’re going to trade Player X before we do anything else because it might not be the right time to get proper value on a given player,” Hahn said. “We’re in a position right now where we have a few players who are under control only for another year, so there’s a bit of a clock on them. Guys who are controllable longer than that, there’s not necessarily any urgency to make a move until you feel like you have peaked out on value and it makes the most sense for the long-term ...

Yasiel Puig an ‘important’ part of Dodgers again

You can’t drive up the asking price by not talking him up.

He simply conceded that Puig has “re-established himself as an important part of our ballclub.”

The Dodgers nonetheless have a surplus in the outfield. Joc Pederson is the center fielder, but the corner candidates include Puig, Andre Ethier, Andrew Toles, Howie Kendrick, Scott Van Slyke, Kiké Hernandez and Trayce Thompson.

MLB To Standardize Medical Information Disclosure | BaseballAmerica.com

“This is kind of an area where we’ve been moving each year since we adopted the electronic medical records . . . to get more consistency and standardization across clubs,” Halem said. “It was largely left to a committee of athletic trainers to determine the types of records each club should maintain and how to maintain them. We’re going to formalize it a little more and contemplate pushing for guidance in terms of what has to be in and what has to be out. Just make sure everybody has ...

Commissioner Rob Manfred on CBA talks | MLB.com

Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed optimism on Wednesday that a new Collective Bargaining Agreement will be in place by the time the current deal expires Dec. 1.

“Look, I think we’re going to make a deal before the expiration of the agreement,” Manfred said at the annual General Managers Meetings. “I remain optimistic that we’ll be able to do that. Collective bargaining is one of those processes where it’s difficult to predict with certainty when things are going to take place.

Scott Boras praises MN Twins’ new front-office combo

“I’ve met with them,” Boras said Wednesday at the general managers’ meetings. “As far as the brain trust part of it, I think they’re well intact.”

Boras has far more experience negotiating contracts with Twins GM Thad Levine from his days with the Texas Rangers than with fast-rising chief baseball officer Derek Falvey, formerly the assistant GM with the Cleveland Indians. But as a combination, they seemed to hit it off with Boras here this week.

“I think it’s going to be an ...

Free-agent relievers take stage this offseason | MLB.com

We need to see more Duane Wards, Sparky Lyles, and Rollie Fingers again.

Get rid of the closers and bring back the firemen!

“The one thing I think you’re seeing a little differently is having someone that has closer-like stuff being used for two or three innings, and then balancing that with a pitch count,” Mozeliak said. “That’s a very slippery slope when you talk about in-season vs. postseason.”

Mike Pagliarulo Is Marlins New Hitting Coach

He’s no Jeter.

He started plotting his next move, getting back to his research roots: Now what? Instead of a high school kid looking for a college, Pagliarulo was the middle-aged father of two grown children and looking for another direction….

A year later, with the Marlins moving on from Barry Bonds after one season as hitting coach, Pagliarulo got the job. As he works with assistant hitting coach Frank Menechino, Pagliarulo will be tasked with helping Marlins hitters digest the occasionally ...

Pirates set to gauge thin line of free-agent pitching arms | TribLIVE

Think about that for a minute.

Leading up to free agency, the Pirates extended multiyear offers to their latest successful reclamation project in Ivan Nova. But Nova seemed determined to test what figures to be a historically thin market for starting pitching.

Nova is rated the fourth-best starting pitcher available, according to CBSSports.com.

Cubs focusing more on finding the next great closer than Aroldis Chapman or Kenley Jansen | CSN Chicago

Well then.

Chapman is looking for $100 million, said one plugged-in agent posted up at the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa during the general manager meetings. If Chapman’s camp can draw the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers into a bidding war, then maybe the 100-mph closer gets a five-year deal and doubles the $50 million guaranteed the Philadelphia Phillies would regret giving Jonathan Papelbon after the 2011 season.

Turner, Cespedes lead MLB Hot Stove rumors | MLB.com

Rumor: Yankees have reached out to free-agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes’ agency

Why it makes sense: Cespedes, a top right-handed bat who hit .280 with 31 homers in 2016, would slot in perfectly alongside lefties Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner in the Yankees’ outfield. Cespedes’ 132 wRC+ ranked sixth among Major League outfielders, he’s hit 30-plus homers in back-to-back seasons, and 20-plus in each of his five in the big leagues. Aaron Judge and Aaron Hicks, the Yankees’ two likeliest ...

I endorse this plan. I’d rather see the team spend their money on their bullpen (and/or on future free agent starters).

Newly hired Twins GM Thad Levine, who was involved internationally as a front office executive with the Rangers, said he supports reform but only with the concerns of international trainers taken into account.

“My concern is just simply about the development of players there,” Levine said. “I think sometimes we demonize the trainers down there. In practice they play a vital role in the development of the players. They’re investing a lot of time ...

they ultimately hired Marvin Miller in the spring of 1966. To say this was a watershed moment is an extreme understatement. In 2016 the MLBPA is publicly celebrating its 50th anniversary-–the pre-Miller days aren’t even acknowledged.

The owners were not happy with the appointment of Miller, and they tried to torpedo it. “We could tell from the reaction of the owners that Marvin would be good for us,” Jim Bouton later said. “They hated him. They were saying that he would bring in ...

Another old essay, but also one that I found interesting.

Sports writing—and baseball writing in particular, because statistics have become such a strong part of the modern game’s analysis—is deceptively difficult. Fifty years ago, it was enough to write colorful anecdotes about beefy jocks, gathering stories by drinking with the boys and preserving access by withholding any unflattering anecdote, describing their achievements in hyperbole and doggerel. Nowadays, a good sportswriter is ...

South Korea Charges 21 With Match Fixing

The South Korean police said Monday that they were pressing criminal charges against 21 people, including two professional baseball pitchers in the KBO League, on suspicion of match fixing.

In 2014, the pitchers, Lee Sung-min of the NC Dinos and Yoo Chang-sik of the Hanwha Eagles, deliberately walked batters in return for gifts and cash from match-fixing brokers, the police said. Lee now plays for the Lotte Giants and Yoo for the Kia Tigers.
