2014 AFL All-Star Team - BaseballAmerica.com

It was nice seeing most of these guys for the first time this fall. I wish MLB televised more games online, though.

Rule 5 Draft: Who Could Go And Why - BaseballAmerica.com

Baseball America runs down potential Rule 5 picks.

Multiple sources outside of the Diamondbacks organization believe that Arizona will take Rays catcher Oscar Hernandez with the first pick. The Twins are expected to take Braves righthander J.R. Graham with the fifth pick if Graham makes it that far.

Yankees’ Cashman: A-Rod needs to shed a few pounds | New York Post

I thought he was working out like a mad man?

Nobody expected Alex Rodriguez to turn into a tub of goo while suspended for the 2014 season, but he has a few pounds to shed to hit the weight the Yankees have told him to report at when spring training opens in late February.

Sources: Padres, Dodgers agree on Matt Kemp trade | UTSanDiego.com

BOOM!

The Padres have reached an agreement with the Dodgers that would send outfielder Matt Kemp and catcher Tim Federowicz to San Diego in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal and a pair of pitching prospects, sources told the U-T.

The Padres would also receive roughly $30 million to help offset the cost of the remaining five years and $107 million on Kemp’s eight-year, $160 million contract.

According to sources, the Padres are packaging Grandal with right-hander Joe Wieland and another ...

Brandon McCarthy, Dodgers ‘close’ to 4-year deal, per report

The Dodgers have reportedly maxed out their frequent shopper card at the winter meetings on Wednesday, closing in on yet another transaction. The team is close to a four-year contract with starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

McCarthy had a sneakily good season in 2014, the first fully healthy campaign of his career. The right-hander was 10-15 with a 4.05 ERA between the Diamondbacks and Yankees. His peripherals were much ...

Dodgers Acquire Howie Kendrick

The Friedman train don’t stop y’all.

The Dodgers have acquired second baseman Howie Kendrick from the Angels, MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick reports.  According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Halos are getting back southpaw Andrew Heaney, who was just acquired by the Dodgers from the Marlins earlier today.

Kendrick has been a subject of trade rumors for much of the offseason, with teams such as the Orioles, Yankees and Blue Jays all connected to the veteran second baseman at various times.  In ...

Jimmy Rollins traded to Dodgers

Rollins down the river.

Jimmy Rollins has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, ending his 15-year stint with the Philadelphia Phillies, sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Jimmy Rollins, who has one year remaining on his contract, could provide the Dodgers with a short-term solution at shortstop until top prospect Corey Seager is ready for the majors.

It is unclear what Philadelphia acquired in exchange for the 36-year-old Rollins, a three-time All-Star shortstop who won the National League ...

The Houston Astros have agreed to a three-year, $18.5 million contract with Luke Gregerson and also have agreed to sign reliever Pat Neshek, sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney, confirming multiple reports.

Gregerson is expected to take over as the team’s closer in 2015 with Neshek, coming off a career season, helping to fortify the back end of the bullpen.

The Battered Bastardo of Baseball.

The Phillies are close to sending Jimmy Rollins to the Dodgers, and according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal and MLB Daily Rumors’ Robert Murray, sent left-handed reliever Antonio Bastardo to the Pirates in exchange for minor league pitcher Joely Rodriguez.

Bastardo, 29, posted a 3.94 ERA and 3.10 FIP in 64 innings with the Phillies last season. He struck out 81, walked 34, and owns a career 3.72 ERA. Bastardo has been efficient in six major league seasons, ...

Looking For the Real Chase Headley | FanGraphs Baseball

Headley fits in New York.

So what do we have going forward? Headley’s defensive numbers in 2014 were stellar, and while regression should certainly be expected, his ability to handle that position over his next contract isn’t likely in question. His fly ball tendency will play extremely differently in Yankee Stadium than it will in AT&T Park, as suggested by his 118 NYY PRD and 89 SF PRD figures on fly balls listed above. AT&T is more liner and grounder-friendly, though as discussed above, ...

With Jon Lester out, Red Sox can stick to their plan | Boston Herald

I am not in the “sky is falling” group of Red Sox fans now that Jon Lester signed with the Cubs. The Red Sox have ample resources to improve their rotation. Although it’s fun to see your team get the splashy, expensive free agent, those moves aren’t always the best moves long term.

General manager Ben Cherington said this week the team has 15 or 20 scenarios it’s considering to fill the two massive holes atop its starting rotation.

No matter where Lester ranked on that list in terms of ...

Slugging Korean phenom might be Mets’ best bet at shortstop | New York Post

Who is Jeong-ho Kang?

Then there’s Jeong-ho Kang, the 27-year-old Korean who intrigues the Mets enough that they have scouted him in person and on video and convened earlier this week at the Winter Meetings — at the Mets’ behest — with Kang’s agent Alan Nero. Cabrera also is represented by Nero, yet the Mets’ interest lies primarily with Kang.

Dodgers adding Kendrick, Rollins in trades | MLB.com

The Dodgers turn Dee Gordon into Howie Kendrick, reliever Chris Hatcher, catcher/infielder Austin Barnes and utility man Enrique Hernandez.

They made separate trades with the Marlins and Angels, sending second baseman Dee Gordon, starting pitcher Dan Haren, cash considerations and infielder Miguel Rojas to Miami, receiving four young players in return and flipping the key piece, left-handed starter Andrew Heaney, to the Angels for second baseman Howie Kendrick.

Oh my! Dick Enberg wins 2015 Ford C. Frick Award

Padres broadcaster Dick Enberg is the 2015 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting and contributions to baseball.

Enberg celebrated the achievement at a news conference Wednesday during the MLB Winter Meetings held this week, fittingly, in San Diego.

He began his career calling Angels games in 1968, and has worked as the play-by-play announcer for Padres telecasts on Fox Sports San Diego since 2010.

The Royals are helping a lot of guys get very rich

You too can win 89 games!

In recent years, teams had been ebbing away from paying relievers significant dollars, feeling they were the easiest pieces to find inexpensively. However, Kansas City’s run to the World Series behind a dominant trio of late-game relievers – Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland – has convinced more teams to try to invest in this area.

For the first time since after the 2007 campaign, two relievers in the same free agent class received more than $35 ...

The Rangers added Russell Wilson to their Triple-A roster to keep other teams from taking him

Well, he does have a ring.

Remember when the Texas Rangers drafted Russell Wilson last year in the Rule 5 draft, then brought him into training camp as a motivational speaker? Well, apparently, the Rangers really really liked it: worried another team would copy them, they added Wilson to their Triple-A roster.

As a Double-A player—“player”—it would cost another team $12,500 to poach Wilson. Now a Triple-A “player,” it will cost another team $50,000, and they’d have to keep Wilson on their ...

What the Jon Lester signing means for him, the Cubs and the Red Sox | HardballTalk

Good stuff from Craig Calcaterra.

So that’s what it all means for Boston, Chicago and Lester. Now, here’s what it means for you and me and everyone who yaks about baseball: we need to relax. One signing does not a pennant win or lose. You’ll see, in the coming days, an awful lot of talk about how “the balance of power” has shifted in the NL Central and the AL East and stuff like that. Don’t believe most of it. It’s in the same vein as the talk that had the 2012 Phillies winning it ...

Major League Baseball Sees Record $9 Billion In Revenues For 2014

This never would have happened if baseball had a salary cap.

With 2014 soon coming to a close, Bud Selig and Major League Baseball can look back and say, “It was a very good year.” The league will see approx. $9 billion in gross revenues for the 2014 calendar year, a new record. Adjustments are still be calculated that could push the league slightly over the threshold with the value being described as “right there” in relation to $9 billion. That figure is up from $8 billion just last ...

Red Sox discussing Wade Miley trade with Diamondbacks - Over the Monster

I would like this pickup.

The Red Sox need to find someone to top their rotation, and that’s been the major focus of the offseason to this point, but let’s not forget that the middle and back-end of the rotation are also in need of upgrades: the only pitchers on the roster at this moment who probably should be in 2015’s rotation are Joe Kelly and Clay Buchholz. The Sox have not forgotten this, as they are in active trade discussions for Diamondbacks’ pitcher Wade Miley, according to FOX Sports’ ...
