MURRAY CHASS: FIVE PERCENT IS NO SOLUTION

Come, Bob Watson, come! The game is afoot!

As if blacks and Latinos don’t have enough difficulty getting managerial jobs, the Counsell and Jennings hirings show how much more difficult it is.

Manfred underlined that reality in a memo he sent to all clubs earlier this month.
“In those instances when a qualified internal candidate is under prime consideration to fill one of these positions, I will be open to communicating with Clubs about the possibility of allowing a different interview ...

Alex Rodriguez ties Babe Ruth for 4th on all-time RBIs list at 1,992

Because RBIs were not considered an official statistic until 1920, there is some discrepancy as to how many RBIs Ruth should be credited with. However, Elias Sports Bureau, the statistician of Major League Baseball, has Ruth at 1,992 for his career.

bb-ref has Ruth at 2214 RBI. If you ignore everything before 1920, it becomes 1990 RBI. So it would seem that they’re ignoring everything before 1920 and have two extra RBI unaccounted for. Maybe they came from the same game as Ty Cobb’s two extra ...

Measuring MLB’s best game-callers

No Vin Scully?

1. How do you measure game-calling?

Here’s a fun task: Try quantifying something as ephemeral as game-calling. Well, after a decade of research, that’s just what we’ve managed to do—by crafting a statistical model that attempts to quantify the value of everything from stolen-base prevention and directing pace of play to identifying hitter tendencies like swing behavior in various game situations and knowing which batters expand hit zones in RBI opportunities. Sound ...

MLB.com: Rays 5, Athletics 2

The Rays don’t seem to be attracting much notice this season and I wanted to highlight them. They lost their GM and manager during the offseason, traded away various players including ones who had been a key component of the team in the past, and didn’t make any big splashy free agent signings (as usual). Things haven’t been easy during the season either as Alex Cobb went out for the year without throwing a pitch, Drew Smyly only made three starts before going on the DL and is out for at least ...

Fans angry after Miami Marlins players skip charity event | Miami Herald Miami Herald

When I read the headline, I didn’t think it was a big deal. Committing to the event and not showing up, however, is weak.

Caught up in the disappointment of a seven-game losing streak, the handful of Marlins players who had committed to attending the event skipped out, bringing ire from fans Friday who paid between $100 and $175 to be there.

Although the event was optional for players to attend, team president David Samson said he was disappointed that none of the ones who had committed showed ...

Inside Baseball: Blue Jays tried for Hamels, stick with Gibbons; plus notes - CBSSports.com

According to sources, the Blue Jays inquired about Cole Hamels but were told Hamels would not waive his 20-team no-trade clause to go to Toronto, as is his right (Hamels, meantime, has handled things professionally; he hasn’t complained and generally pitched well for the non-contending Phillies). That Hamels call was a blow to the Phillies, who likely saw Toronto, with all its young pitching talent (Aaron Sanchez, Daniel Norris, etc.) as a potential landing spot, especially considering their ...

NYTimes Columnist: Bryce Harper coming to Yankees, A-Rod is worse than Satan.

Come for the arrogance:

When Harper was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, he told the magazine that two of his goals in baseball were to play in Yankee Stadium and to do it in pinstripes.

When I reminded Lerner, one of the Nationals’ owners, of those comments this week, he laughed.

“Every 16-year-old kid says that,” he said.

But not every 16-year-old kid is Bryce Harper. And what Bryce Harper wants, Bryce Harper seems to get.

Stay for the random shots at A-rod, who had ...

A Baseball’s Exit Velocity Is Five Parts Hitter, One Part Pitcher

But now we have Statcast. The new technology that collects data on the position and velocity of the ball and the players on the field is beginning to change what we know (or thought we knew) about all sorts of things — pitching included. And that’s raising new questions about how much effect a pitcher can have on a ball once it’s put in play. The answer might be: a lot.

Paul White: For baseball lifer, game goes on

I will always remember calling the Baseball Weekly offices to try and get an answer to a baseball question about playoff tiebreakers. When the person who answered the phone didn’t have the answer, he said, “Let me get Paul.” I was surprised when Paul turned out to be Baseball Weekly’s editor, Paul White. We then had a very nice conversation about the MLB playoff tiebreaker, Baseball Weekly, and baseball in general. I appreciated his time. I have always appreciated his writing. Enjoy your ...

Dodgers suspend Erisbel Arruebarrena for remainder of 2015 season

S ANGELES—Dodgers shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena has been suspended by the team for the remainder of the 2015 season “for repeated failures to comply with his contract,” the team announced on Thursday.

The infielder hasn’t played for any of the four Dodgers minor league affiliates currently in season, and was held back for extended spring training at the club’s facility at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.

“Erisbel is still a developing athlete. Our plan is to work with him in Arizona for a ...

Red Sox have quite a stockpile of talent in Greenville - Sports - The Boston Globe

“Potential means you haven’t done anything yet.” ~ Bill Parcels

With Moncada joining the rest of the group in Greenville, a significant piece of the Sox’ future could be taking shape. Of course, it’s also possible that one or three or even all of those players will encounter adversity, perhaps even get swallowed by it. In A ball, the potential for a future everyday role or even stardom is constantly qualified by the reality of attrition.

Perhaps players in the group won’t make the ...

Brewers pitcher Will Smith ejected for using foreign substance

Umpires just don’t understand.

Brewers reliever Will Smith was ejected from Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Braves after umpires found a foreign substance on his arm.

With one out and Jace Peterson at an 0-1 count, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez asked umpire crew chief Jim Joyce to take a look at Smith’s arm, where he claimed to have seen something that wasn’t exactly sweat. Joyce went up, touched Smith’s arm, and quickly and calmly ejected him.

It’s not like it was particularly ...

Holding Separate Elections For Player and Non-Player Candidates Would Greatly Improve the Hall of Fame’s Era Ballot Vote Process

By holding separate elections for players and non-players, the Committee would be able to continue to add candidates who lasted 15 years in BBWAA voting while also having enough room on the ballot for candidates such as Grich, Evans, Hernandez, and Whitaker whose Hall of Fame cases are strengthened by advanced metrics but were too quickly dismissed by BBWAA voters.  In addition, putting the non-players on their own ballot would not only give the Committee space to select a solid candidate like ...

Remembering How Mike Trout’s Road to the Red Sox Was Detoured

It was simply more comforting getting the chance to see a player play more baseball. Both Red Sox scouts had seen him a bunch. (“He was a kid who was fun to watch. He was fun to scout,” Fagnant said. “I never dreaded that 5 1/2-hour drive to Millville ...

wtop.com | Marvin Hudson is a stooge

Marvin Hudson is, by most accounts, not a bad umpire. He’s been in the league since 1998, and has been largely forgettable, which is one of the qualities an umpire should strive for.

He has been these things to most every team. Most every team except, that is, for the Washington Nationals.

Hudson was born in Marietta, Ga., just outside of Atlanta. This is interesting only because since 2012, when the Nats flipped the switch from perennial doormats to contenders and forged their rivalry with ...

5 things MLB can learn from baseball in Japan. | SportsonEarth.com : Molly Knight Article

This.

1. Really make hitters stay in the batter’s box.

Sorry Bryce Harper. I love you forever, because you’re the best, but you were wrong Wednesday night when you argued balls and strikes, took a leisurely stroll toward your dugout, and then flipped off MLB’s new “stay in the batter’s box” rule by tapping the chalk with your toe after the home plate umpire told you to get your ass back in there.

At first I was against this particular pace of play rule change, because I thought it would be ...
