DSPN: Unspinning The Mythical Gyroball, The Demon Miracle Pitch That Wasn’t

The shuuto isn’t new or unique. Its first introduction to Americans was as “the great equalizer,” the pitch that constantly bedeviled Tom Selleck in Mr. Baseball. Only the name is exotic. In MLB, the shuuto has been thrown for decades, but under a different identity. You know it as a two-seam fastball, or a circle change, or a screwball. It’s any pitch that breaks to a pitcher’s arm side. The shuuto in Japan generally falls somewhere between a change-up and a fastball in velocity, but it’s ...

The Adventures of a Gaijin Fan: Three Games in Japan

QVC Marine Field is one of the most unique venues in NPB. Fans in the upper deck can see the ocean behind the right field wall. The sea can play havoc with the winds, but were calm on this day. It’s an outdoor stadium, but the turf is artificial, which allows doorless Audi convertibles to cart in relief pitchers without breaking the field. The most unique in-play feature is the vast stretch of foul territory; during a game in mid-May a runner advanced to second on a sacrifice fly to the ...

Tony Gwynn’s Family’s Lawsuit Against Big Tobacco

The family of Gwynn, who played for the San Diego Padres from 1982 to 2001, filed the lawsuit against Altria Group Inc., the company formerly known as Philip Morris. They allege the company induced Gwynn to start dipping when he began college at San Diego State University in 1977 with free samples of their product, knowing its health risks. As The New York Times reports:

For 31 years—1977 to 2008—Gwynn used one and a half to two cans of smokeless tobacco (usually Skoal) per day. It was the ...

Braves trade minor leaguers for draft pick (and Matusz)

The Braves made another trade Monday that underscores the importance they place on the June draft in their rebuilding plan.

They traded minor league pitchers Brandon Barker and left-hander Trevor Belicek to the Orioles in exchange for left-handed reliever Brian Matusz and the No. 76 pick in next month’s draft. That brings to five the number of picks the Braves hold among the first 80 picks in the June 9-11 draft, Nos. 3, 40, 44, 76 and 80.

The Braves immediately designated for assignment ...

Mike Mowrey was put out of yesterday’s game after he had been called out at second on a close play. He laid on the ground and gave an imitation of swimming. Umpire Byron promptly ordered him from the field.

Marlins Sue Season Ticketholders, Vendors Bankrupted by Small Crowds

Then last year the Marlins sued Axelband, alleging he had illegally backed out of a two-year season ticket deal. He might have reacted angrily, but that’s just not the kind of guy he is. “I wasn’t shocked, just disappointed,” he says. “After all these years, I wondered, why now?”

Axelband isn’t alone. In fact, the Marlins have sued at least nine season ticketholders and luxury suite owners since 2013. That virtually never happens in sports, experts say. Two stadium vendors are also locked in ...

NYP: Bartolo Colon told Nationals: ‘Throw it down the middle, [I’m] not swinging’

I paid good $ to see BartoLOLo swing the bat at Nats Park and instead this happened:

Colon later admitted he has battled lower-back soreness for the last two-plus weeks. Not wanting to risk aggravating the back, he kept the bat on his shoulder and was called out on strikes three times.

“I thought it wasn’t worth it to swing,” Colon said. “I swing at the balls pretty hard and I thought, ‘Not worth making my back worse,’ so I told their catcher from the beginning, ‘Just throw it ...

Please don’t take away our glorious intentional walks

I love the proactive approach of our commissioner, but this is silly. If the traditional intentional walk goes away this is what we would miss:

1. The chance of a pitcher throwing a ball away. It happens.

2. Taking a pitcher out of his rhythm by forcing him to throw four pitches intentionally out of the strike zone, which are usually at about 75 percent effort.

3. Giving the home team a chance to steadily rain boos on a visiting pitcher the entire time he is intentionally walking a hitter. ...Read More...

Judd Apatow to co-direct ‘30 for 30’ on Dwight Gooden, Darryl Strawberry

What if I told you the story of the ‘86 Mets could be littered with penis jokes?

Hollywood A-lister Judd Apatow will co-direct an upcoming “30 for 30” documentary on 1980s Mets superstars Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry.

ESPN announced last week that the “Trainwreck” director would work with “You Don’t Know Bo” director Michael Bonfiglio on “Doc & Darryl,” which is set to air July 19. Here’s the trailer.

The film reunites former ace pitcher Gooden and star slugger Strawberry at a diner ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-23-2016

Pittsburgh Press, May 23, 1916:

Ray Caldwell of the New York Yankees, owes his late start this spring to a peculiar accident which befell him in the spring training came at Macon, Ga. While carving his initials on his favorite bat the knife slipped and cut into the top of his right index finger.

When a pitcher starts fooling with a bat there’s no telling what will happen to him. People should never monkey with machinery they don’t know anything about.

Caldwell was actually a pretty decent ...

Plate umpire Rackley leaves game

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Plate umpire David Rackley left Sunday’s Dodgers-Padres game after getting hit in the groin by a foul bunt attempt by Joc Pederson.

Rackley immediately collapsed and was down for about five minutes and was tended to by a Padres trainer. He had to be helped to his feet. He left the field under his own power, and handed a ball to a kid on his way to the tunnel.

And then they played another 12 innings.

Yu Darvish set to join Cole Hamels in rotation | texasrangers.com

Daniels also had a broader vision. He looked ahead to a time this season when Texas would have two aces—Hamels and Yu Darvish—at the top of its rotation. That one-two punch might compare favorably with any in the game and potentially make the Rangers a formidable October team.

That vision is about to become reality. Darvish, fully recovered from Tommy John surgery, made his final Minor League rehab start on Sunday, and he likely will return to the rotation next Saturday against the Pirates in ...

OTP 2016 May 23: Baseball owners hear from Democratic, Republican strategists

Baseball owners heard from Democratic and Republican strategists Wednesday on the opening day of their spring meeting.

Jim Messina, co-chair of Priorities USA Action, spoke to them along with Matt Rhoades, chairman of America Rising. Messina was campaign manager of President Barack Obama’s successful re-election campaign in 2012 and Rhoades was campaign manager four years ago for Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus Humiliated in Homophobic ‘Nightmare’ at Padres Game

The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus was at the center of a disturbing incident that happened at Petco Park on Saturday night. Called upon to sing the Star-Spangled Banner, their singing was replaced with a recording of a woman, nobody stopped it, and they were led off the field afterward while being taunted by homophobic fans in the stands.

Uncertainty Reigns With Draft Just Three Weeks Away - BaseballAmerica.com

This year’s draft sounds even riskier than normal.

“There’s more comfort this year with the high school class than the college class,” one scouting director said. “It’s not a clear-cut Top 10 group . . . not as high-end a group as you would have hoped for this year.”

A’s place Sonny Gray on DL

Sonny Gray’s disappointing season has taken another turn for the worse, as the A’s placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a strained right trapezius.

Left-hander Daniel Coulombe was recalled from Triple-A Nashville to replace Gray on the 25-man roster.
This is the first career DL stint for Gray, who is 3-5 with a 6.19 ERA in nine starts.

The A’s make another move on the Angels for “worst luck in the West”.

AP: Plumbing issues in Yankees’ dugout at Oakland Coliseum

And Shooty forgot to bring his plunger.

There were plumbing issues in the visitor’s dugout at the Oakland Coliseum before the start of Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees.

Several maintenance workers spent nearly an hour trying to fix a backed up toilet while a member of the Coliseum staff mopped up the standing water seeping into the dugout. Yankees manager Joe Girardi and some New York players sidestepped the mess as they made their way to the field for pre-game workouts.

To this point Kelly has been frustrating. Great stuff but little consistency. So, I’m not going to get excited about one game.

Kelly could bring the rotation to the next level, and something extraordinary may be on the way.
