As expected, Homer Bailey’s 2015 season is over and he will undergo ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction in his right elbow, better known as “Tommy John” surgery.
Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek will perform the surgery next Friday in Cincinnati. Recovery from Tommy John surgery typically takes one year, meaning the Reds expect Bailey to return sometime next season.
Bailey, who turns 29 on Sunday, missed the end of 2014 with a right elbow flexor mass injury and had surgery to ...
He can now retire to pursue he’s lifelong dream - hunting and killing Zack Greinke.
Carlos Quentin, who’s been playing at Triple-A for the Mariners after being released by the Braves last month, has decided to retire at age 32.
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Quentin left the Tacoma team Thursday after going 3-for-17 in five games.
Atlanta acquired Quentin from San Diego as part of the Craig Kimbrel trade, but his inclusion was strictly to help balance out the money and the ...
Right now, I think Betts is the better ballplayer. For all the significance of Bogaerts simply being in the majors at such a young age—younger than Betts was at debut—the facts are that we’ve had a pretty good look at him, and he is, right now, about an average major-leaguer. And right now, in my assessment, Betts is better than that. (Another month of Betts’ slump might make me reconsider.) I’m taking the better now player, even if he is short and doesn’t have the ...
Surely, knocking off Jim Breuer would even things out?
A study done by the dating app The Grade shows men and women who support the Yankees are liked more than Mets fans, per Chris Perez and Natalie O’Neil of the New York Post:
Photos posted by Yankees fans were “liked” 46 percent of the time while Mets fans only have a 38 percent “like rate,” according to the study.
The study is based on 400,000 “swipe interactions” from 6,000 app users who listed sports teams as an ...

Because draft picks are not eligible to be traded for 12 months from their signing date, the Padres and Nationals are not allowed to confirm that Turner has indeed already been traded, and he remains in the Padres organization at this time. However, it’s public knowledge that Turner will be changing organizations mid-summer, creating an awkward situation where the Padres are stewarding another team’s asset. As I wrote after the trade was made and Turner was unofficially revealed as the ...
I wonder if they’ll play “Seven Nation Army” every five minutes to make Orioles players feel at home.
Moving the series was a monumental task, but one the Rays have been able to execute under the leadership of VP of Operations Rick Nage, team President Brian Auld, and VP of Sales Brian Richeson. Nafe said the air has been like post season play, with sudden mobilization to make the series happen.
Tickets are general admission for the weekend, lower-bowl only, and according to Brian Auld the ...
For the last three years the baseball world’s been waiting for Bryce Harper to break out. Yes, his forearm muscles have certainly popped onto the scene, which isn’t quite the impact everyone around the sport expected when the Nationals took him with the first overall pick in the 2010 amateur draft.
All told, in parts of three seasons Harper’s put up a slash line of .272/.351/.465 with 55 home runs. Solid, respectable numbers. The key number when talking about Harper is games played. ...

My real purpose in doing this was to educate myself about the 30 major league rotations. If I can force myself to do this once a week—which I probably can’t, but if I could—then I would develop a stronger understanding of who was in the rotation right now for all 30 teams, who their #1 starter was, etc. I’m old; I have a hard time lodging all of that information in my head.
I have all of John’s books. He’s had a tough couple of years physically. If you’ve enjoyed his books in the past, help keep them coming by purchasing this year’s book. It may be too late to use the info in fantasy draft but it’s still a good reference.
One last thing before we get to the goodies. If you happened to peruse the comments section of the Gameday (highly, highly recommended if you don’t already), John passed along an update of The 2015 Baseball Prospect Book. To quote Mr. Sickels from ...
I estimate only 10-12 Primates care about the NBA, but with our own thread, we won’t detract from what this site is really about: more trolling than ever.

Major League Baseball average game times are down almost 8 1/2 minutes from 2014, thanks to the league’s new pace-of-game rules.
That’s good news not just for fans, but players as well; ESPN reports that MLB officials and the players union are in discussions to drop the fines for slow play the league could impose beginning Friday.
According to Major League Baseball, through Wednesday’s games, the average nine-inning game time of just under two ...

MLBTR introduced its DFA Tracker back in August of 2013, and has endeavored to keep tabs on every single DFA since. In addition to tracking whether a trade, release, or outright is pursued, the tracker further reflects the fact that an outrighted player can be claimed, can be assigned to the minors with their original team, or (if they have sufficient service time or have been outrighted before) can elect free agency. (It also covers the rare scenarios of the return of ...

Pittsburgh Press, May 1, 1915:
RULES FOR THE ROOTER
Always refer to the umpire as a __!!!__*?*?*__!!!
Don’t forget to pound the man sitting in front of you with your fist when the home team makes a home run.
Greet the opposing pitcher every inning thusly: “We’ll get you this time, you big hunk of neufchatel.” He’s probably a college graduate, you know.
After consuming the contents of a pop bottle, hurl the empty receptable at the batboy. It will waken him up a bit.
Call each player who ...
Right-hander Kris Medlen, a popular signing among Royals fans last winter, is inching closer in his comeback bid from his second Tommy John surgery.
Medlen told MLB.com that he will be heading to Surprise, Ariz., on Monday to begin throwing against hitters. If all goes well, he could start a 30-day rehab assignment sometime in May.

When Nexen Heroes first baseman Park Byung-ho, two-time South Korean baseball MVP, steps into the batter’s box Thursday, he will have more than a few sets of watchful eyes tracking his movements.
According to the Heroes, a Seoul-based Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club, scouts from six Major League Baseball (MLB) teams have applied for credentials to watch the Heroes at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul this week.
Sandy Alderson said on Thursday that if the Mets called up Herrera or Matt Reynolds, it wouldn’t be to sit on the bench.
Once Herrera joins the club, Daniel Murphy will shift to third base until David Wright returns from the DL, according to Mike Puma (April 30).

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he’d like to watch a baseball game with Teddy Roosevelt — and possibly rapper Pitbull.
Asked who he would take if he could bring “any historian or inventor” to a baseball game, the potential 2016 GOP presidential contender said that he’d probably bring the United States’ 26th president - but that he might want to have Pitbull there as well.
“The reason you like baseball is that you can actually have a conversation with people,” Mr. Bush said. ...Read More...

One of the worst things that comes out of civil unrest like we’ve seen in Baltimore are the armchair civic leaders, lecturing people from the comfort of their homes and lives which have absolutely no connection to the unrest in question about what they should or should not be doing.
You’ve seen them on your Facebook feed. Quoting Martin Luther King under the delusion that they have more to say about being, for example, a black person or a poor person in a place where black and poor people ...

It’s to the point where Hamilton is so convincing he doesn’t even have to try. And he hasn’t been trying.
In his Texas press conference, Hamilton never once took responsibility for causing the Angels a lot of heartache. Instead, what he said was Moreno should have known better. That strikes me as a very different message than the one he gave him when selling him on the $125 million deal, which is among the all-time worst from a team ...
Pittsburgh Gazette Times, April 30, 1915:
Benny Kauff, the Ty Cobb of the Federal League was the indirect cause [yesterday] afternoon of more genuine excitement at the Polo Grounds than that field had known since September 23, 1908, when Fred Merkle lost a pennant through failure to tag second base. Kauff, who at noon time deserted the Brooklyn Federal League club and signed a three years ironclad contract with the New York Nationals, attempted to play centerfield for the Giants. President James ...

None of this matters much, to be sure, except as an unexpected reminder of the massive and relentless add-ons and distractions of modern-day ball. The Kiss Camera, the racing mascots, the T-shirt cannonades, the God Bless, the deafening rock, the home-team anthem, the infield sweepers’ dance, the well-plaqued Hall of Heroes, the retired numbers, the gymnasium-sized souvenir shops, the Texas steak restaurant in right (with its roped-off waiting areas thoughtfully supplied with overhead ...
