Terry Collins not helping rookies by removing them in big spots | New York Post

Somebody needs to tell Terry his priority at this point is developing his youngins, not winning an extra game or two.

“For me, I was trying to get someone on base and maybe create something,” Collins said. “He’ll have his chances down the road, believe me. He’s going to be a good hitter. But [Chapman] absolutely mows down left-handed hitting so I went with a right-handed hitter.”

Why MLB games are FIVE MINUTES longer this season

But as with two-homer games on Opening Day, this pace would not hold. Baseball added back four minutes per contest last year, and this year’s games will almost certainly set a new record. Despite a few small changes for the 2017 season—requiring managers to decide more promptly whether to challenge an umpire’s call and making intentional walks automatic—the average nine-inning contest is now 3 hours, 5 minutes—the longest average in baseball history and up five minutes from last year. That’s ...

Passan: Free Giancarlo Stanton: Why the Marlins need to trade baseball’s home run king

What would Jeter do?

For the next 16 days, the Marlins can present contending teams with an alluring possibility: Trade for the hottest hitter alive, a 6-foot-6, 250-pound machine whose 10 home runs in his last 11 games give him a Major League Baseball-leading 43 this season. Stanton cleared waivers on Sunday, multiple sources told Yahoo Sports, allowing the Marlins to deal him to any team through the end of August.

Giancarlo Stanton’s 43rd homer sets club mark | MLB.com

Does this season keep him from getting traded or help him get traded?

“He’s that good,” second baseman Dee Gordon said. “He’s one of the best players in the game. And he’s healthy. He’s killing people. He was averaging like 35 homers and he didn’t even play 150 games those years. For him to be able to play this whole year is pretty cool.”

Cleveland Indians ownership steps up, will players follow? Terry’s Talkin’—Terry Pluto | cleveland.com

Mired.

Since the All-Star break. Bradley Zimmer is batting .203 (.651 OPS).

In August, Zimmer is 0-for-22. He has been sitting out more games against lefty pitching as Francona doesn’t want to put too much pressure on the rookie.

A major difference between Frazier and Zimmer is the latter is a far superior outfielder, a huge upgrade in center field. He is 13-of-14 in stolen bases. While the 24-year-old rookie had a brain belch where he didn’t run out a pop up, he usually has impressed with his ...

Will Duquette make an August trade? Probably. Will it make a difference? Most likely not - BaltimoreBaseball.com

How long can Duquette keep the Orioles viable?

Both of Duquette’s deals this July fit into that same category, and received a collective ho-hum from me and much of the fan base, Of course, acquiring shortstop Tim Beckham looks so far like a stroke of Duquette genius, and Jeremy Hellickson has been solid in two of his three starts.

And, so, I suppose it’s no harm, no foul if Duquette makes another deal this month to acquire a player that can be eligible for a potential playoff roster (trades ...

Sullivan: Let’s Watch Rafael Devers Take Aroldis Chapman Deep

Kung Fu Who?

Even before Sunday, Devers was doing pretty well. He’d advanced through Portland, he’d advanced through Pawtucket, and he’d run a .939 OPS over some dozens of chances in the major leagues. Devers, as a rookie, has taken a firm hold on the Red Sox’s third-base position, which earlier had proven a crippling weakness. Now, though, Devers truly has his breakthrough moment. See, he batted against Chapman in the ninth inning of a one-run game, and he tied it up. He tied it up with ...

BAR: One Joey Votto streak ended, another continues

Joey Votto’s 17-game hit streak ended on Sunday, but he still has another even more impressive streak going – he’s reached base more than once in 18 straight games, the longest such streak in Reds history.

He’s only three games from tying the longest streak in baseball since 1900, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Ted Williams, Votto’s hitting role model, owns the record, reaching base in 21 consecutive games in 1948. Pete Rose and Barry Bonds both had 20-game streaks. Rose with the ...

Derek Jeter will bring old-school baseball style to the owner’s box | New York Post

Mystique and Aura are coming to Miami to rid the game of all your soulless numbers.

Jeter believes in scouting, talent, heart and soul, and he will look to fill the Marlins roster with the same kind of winning player he was during his 20-year championship career with the Yankees. In doing so he will slow down the rush to analytics that is now being portrayed the answer to all of baseball’s questions.

Consider this comment Jeter made to me at his locker several years before he retired.

White Sox Moncada works to handle offspeed | MLB.com

“My focus is try to hit a good pitch, a pitch that is in the strike zone,” said Moncada through interpreter Billy Russo after finishing 1-for-4 with a double in the homestand finale. “Fastball is your first approach, but when you see a breaking pitch or an offspeed pitch, you have to make an adjustment.

“You have to be sure that offspeed pitch is in the strike zone because if not, you are giving a favor to the pitcher. You have to be prepared for that and do something to adjust in your at-bats ...

Angels’ Parker Bridwell fires gem vs. Mariners | MLB.com

Unheralded is an understatement.

With Sunday’s outing, Bridwell (7-1, 2.88 ERA) has allowed two or fewer runs in nine of his last 11 starts, and the Angels are 11-1 this season when he toes the rubber. Keynan Middleton earned his second save of the season by inducing back-to-back flyouts after allowing three hits among Seattle’s first four batters in the ninth.

“I’ve just kind of gotten more in a groove,” Bridwell said. “The way I like to pound the zone, it’s kind of my game every time. If I can ...

Red Sox 3, Yankees 2: Rafael Devers saves the day in the ninth

In a freshly tied game in the ninth, Reed issued his own leadoff walk. He recovered, though, even after his manager attempted to pull him in the middle of an at-bat. Farrell came out of the dugout to insert Craig Kimbrel once Reed fell behind Jacoby Ellsbury, but he was prohibited from doing so because the team had already made a mound visit during the at-bat.

“I messed up. I know the rule,” Farrell said. “I messed up trying to get Kimbrel in the game.”

COONEY: Odubel Herrera’s continued mistakes could cause a stinky situation for Pete Mackanin | Kevin Cooney | buckscountycouriertimes.com

Perhaps it’s because the Phillies coaching brass as a group now is resigned to the fact that “Odubel being Odubel” means having to swallow these kinds of brain fart moments every once in a while.

“I’d prefer, instead of looking at all the positives and the negatives, I prefer to say that he’s more positive than negative and if you look back on the last six, seven weeks, he has not made many mistakes,” Mackanin said. “Today was an innocent mistake.”
