Kyle Schwarber not medically cleared to play field as World Series moves to Wrigley

Schwarber, whose amazing return from injury and subsequent success, has become the biggest individual story of this World Series. After a Game 2 performance in which he had two hits and two RBIs against the Cleveland Indians as the Cubs’ designated hitter, Chicago was clamoring to see whether Schwarber would defy the odds again and get the OK from doctors to allow his surgically reconstructed knee to patrol the outfield.

“Just too much risk associated with playing the field at this ...

Jose Altuve voted Sporting News MLB Player of the Year for 2016

Altuve may himself be on his way to Cooperstown, as through his age 26 season, he has 1,046 hits, a career line of .311/.354/.437 and 199 stolen bases. The only second basemen with more hits at such a young age were Hall of Famers Roberto Alomar, Bobby Doerr and Mazeroski. This award is not about Altuve’s career path, though. It’s about this season, and this season, he was spectacular.

Voting by MLB players

1. Jose Altuve, Houston Astros-84

2. Mookie Betts, Boston Red ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-27-2016

Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger, October 27, 1916:

After almost a year of baseball peace, war again threatens. So far it is confined to personal differences between President Tener, of the National League, and President Johnson, of the American League, but unless the grievances of these two are adjusted, it is a forgone conclusion that the major leagues will be drawn into a fight.

The tl;dr version (as far as I can tell) is that John McGraw implied his team had thrown the final game of the ...

The Strange Story of Why Belize is Full of Chicago Cubs Fans

Why the Cubs—and why Belize? Like a lot of stories from this part of the world, it began with pirates. In this case, however, the outlaws were local TV impresarios, not swashbuckling Johnny Depp look-alikes. In the early ‘80s, there were no television stations in Belize, the only country in Central America whose official language is English. (Anyone with a set would use it to watch VHS tapes.) In 1981, however, Belize City business couple Arthur and Marie Hoare began transmitting the famous ...

Beats: belize, cubs This is why baseball is so white

There are a lot of thoughts on how to bring more black children into baseball, like community programs that try to provide opportunities to inner-city minority children. But there is still a core group of people who talk a lot about baseball as if it’s sacred because of the vague American ideals it represents. We know they exist in baseball’s mainstream because they come out of the woodwork every time baseball doesn’t look the way they think it should. But as sportswriter Will Leitch told ...

Andrew Miller: Girardi’s bullpen calls sometimes ‘created a mess’ | New York Post

I saw this a few times and scratched my head. When you have two guys of their caliber you warm them up once before you bring them into the game. It helps maximize their effectiveness and innings.

“I know when Chapman came back to us for the Yankees this year, Dellin and I were kind of up in the air about what order we would pitch,’’ Miller said. “And in some instances it created a mess because we were both warming up next to each other.

“I think all managers, Joe, Tito [Terry ...

ESPN: Jose Fernandez, friends reportedly had strong odor of alcohol after deadly boat crash

Miami-Dade County authorities say the strong odor of alcohol was found on Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two other men in a boat when they died in a crash last month, according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald.

The warrant, released by the Miami-Dade state attorney, alleges investigators found evidence that the boat’s driver was speeding and driving with “recklessness” that was “exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol.” It does not identify who was ...

Rob Manfred Hints At Meeting With Indians Ownership To Discuss Racist Logo

Manfred hinted to Golic that he has plans to speak with team ownership about the use of the logo during the offseason:

Well, I understand that particular logo is offensive to some people, and I understand why. On the other side of the coin, you have a lot of fans that have history and are invested in the symbols of the Indians. I think that after the World Series, at an appropriate point in time, Mr. [Larry] Dolan and I have agreed we’ll have a conversation about what should happen with ...

MLB Succeeding Where the NBA is Failing

The best team in the American League was swept. The favorite to win the AL Pennant was swept. Oh, the best team in baseball escaped a possible elimination game in the first round. Now, we’ve got a Cleveland/Chicago World Series.

And that’s where the NBA is failing.

The NBA season is already chalked full of headlines. Old faces in different places: Dwyane Wade to the Bulls; Derrick Rose to the Knicks; Al Horford to the Celtics. Struggling teams like the Timberwolves, Magic and Jazz are now ...

Sullivan - Corey Kluber’s Outing Reflected the Times

I don’t think anyone would’ve hit Corey Kluber on Tuesday. Good pitchers look their best when they constantly execute, and Kluber seemed to make fewer mistakes than normal. He was on top of his game, in other words, so the Cubs shouldn’t get too down on themselves. But in another year, perhaps the inside edge wouldn’t have been so forgiving. Those have always been rule-book strikes. Only more recently have they become more common actual strikes. Corey Kluber just pitched a game of the ...

Racist ‘Data Study’ Says You Need A Dad To Be Good At Baseball

“It takes a father to make a professional baseball player,” the study’s introduction says. “This is perhaps not a novel insight–anyone who has seen baseball movies from ‘The Sandlot’ to ‘Field of Dreams’ will instantly recognize the deep connection baseball has to father-son relationships in America. What is new is having the data and analysis to show that the effects are more than anecdotes or nostalgia.”...

Cubs-Indians World Series Game 1 draws best game 1 overnight rating since 2009

The Cleveland Indians win over the Chicago Cubs in game 1 of the 2016 drew a 12.6 overnight rating (on average 12.6 percent of the TVs in the largest 56 markets were tuned-in) per Sports Business Journal’s Austin Karp.

That’s the best World Series first game number since 2009 when the Phillies versus Yankees drew a 13.8 overnight rating. Per Karp the game was up 20% from last year’s 10.5 overnight (Royals-Mets) and up 58% 2014 (Giants Royals).

MLB cancels its Dominican showcase after players protest an international draft

Ben Badler of Baseball America Reports that Major League Baseball has cancelled its Dominican national showcase, which was scheduled for today and tomorrow. Why? Because, Badler reports, trainers and players in the Dominican Republic planned to skip the showcase in protest over Major League Baseball’s push to implement an international draft.

The kicker: Major League Baseball explored bringing in lesser prospects to serve as replacement players for the showcase

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-26-2016

Bridgeport Evening Farmer, October 26, 1916:

Manager Donovan, of the Yankees, will advocate a new rule this winter. “Wild” William says the measure requiring a change pitcher to pitch until the batter facing him has been either put out or has reached first base is one sided. Not that he thinks it is not all right to impose that condition on a relief pitcher, but why not subject a relief batter to the same requirements?

Wild Bill had a point. I’ve always have thought it was sort of weird that ...

A ‘Major League’ interview with director David S. Ward

Ward: Well, part of the setup in the third movie is that they did make it to the World Series but lost when “Wild Thing” gave up a walk-off homer in the seventh game and he just retires from baseball. Even though he’s older, he’s coming back to mentor this young fire-balling reliever they have. They also need a set-up man and Eddie Harris (played by Chelcie Ross) teaches “Wild Thing” to throw junk because he doesn’t have the heater anymore. He does set-up work while he’s mentoring the ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-25-2016

Bridgeport Evening Farmer, October 25, 1916:

One of the tragedies of baseball is the passing from the limelight’s glare of “Smoky Joe” Wood. The rival of Johnson for the American league twirling honors a few years ago, he has now passed into the discard.
It was a pitching duel at Hot Springs, Ark., [in the spring of 1913] that ruined Joe’s career. The Red Sox were pitted against the Pirates in a workout game…[Wood] put everything he had on the pellet. The next day Wood was unable to lift his ...

Arizona Diamondbacks land Red Sox exec Amiel Sawdaye

The exodus of talent leaving the Red Sox over the last year does not fill me with hope.
