Rosenthal’s improvement is a stretch : Sports

It’s not so much throwing strike one rather than ball one, said Rosenthal. “It’s throwing quality strike one and not just throwing it over the plate,” he said.

Manager Mike Matheny touched on one aspect of his game that Rosenthal hadn’t referenced — the fact that Rosenthal has been pitching exclusively from the stretch. Matheny would like to see most all his relievers do that.

“It’s simplified pitching,” Matheny said. “I’m waiting for somebody to convince me otherwise, ...

Hanley Ramirez, Pablo Sandoval take center stage in Boston Red Sox debacle

Debacle? It was a loss. Despite their inconsistent play, despite their breakdowns, despite their failures to play up to expectations, this team has enough talent and, more importantly, time (5.5 back of first) to right the ship and win the division.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-5-2015

El Paso Herald, June 5, 2015:

Should the Boston Braves fail in their efforts to tear off another National league championship, William N. Jarvis, a local baseball enthusiast, has agreed to walk from [Cambridge, Massachusetts] to Philadelphia and return, having as his guardian a big mud turtle, Lucy Lee.

Jarvis and a friend, Fred Woodland, made the bet, the latter standing to lose $100 if the Braves land the bunting, while Jarvis will be compelled to walk the entire distance.

Lucy Lee is to ...

Astros plan to remove Tal’s HIll for 2016

The Astros have received preliminary approval from the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority their plans for a $15-million renovation to Minute Maid Park that would include the removal Tal’s Hill in center field and moving the flag poles so they’re no longer in play.

Braun leaves Brewers for right thumb procedure

Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun left the team Wednesday to travel to California to undergo a second cryotherapy procedure on his troublesome right thumb.
Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell downplayed the significance of this latest development, saying the procedure was pre-planned and referring to it as “maintenance.” But it was the first public indication of any kind that Braun’s first such procedure in October, during which a specialist injected a needle into the base of Braun’s thumb to ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 6-4-2015

Pittsburgh Press, June 4, 1915:

The Chicago National League club may may have new stands next year. The present structures are regular eyesores. They have been patched and repatched and their plans altered so many times that the Cubs’ park is the worst-looking architecturally of any in the major leagues.

The Cubs did have new stands in 1916, but it didn’t happen the way the writer expected.

“Today he pitched like an ace, and that’s what we need,’’ Mark Teixeira said after Tanaka shut down the Mariners 3-1 at Safeco Field on Wednesday to give the Yankees a sweep of the series. “He was throwing 95, throwing his splits, you are just really happy to see that.’’

McCullers spins complete game gem

Righty Lance McCullers, the rookie with lightning, was the one still searing that 96 mph so late in the game, in just his fourth big league start. The 21-year-old kid’s first complete game since high school — and the first nine-inning complete game of his life — was so near….Hinch on Wednesday went to the mound before Davis stepped in, as suspenseful a moment as any pitch itself. Closer Luke Gregerson was warm in the ‘pen, with McCullers’ chance to go the distance in the balance.

Pittsburgh was ranked the second-best city in the United States for baseball fans, according to a recent study by WalletHub, a web-based personal finance company.

The study rated 272 cities based upon 11 metrics split into two categories — “teams and performance” and “costs and fan engagement.” The study took into account MLB and college teams. The Pirates and the Pitt baseball team represented Pittsburgh in the study.

“There’s been rumblings for a couple years now if whether ...

Baseball’s worst long-term contracts - Beyond the Box Score

This week, I will be covering the worst long-term contracts in baseball. While I did end up ranking these contracts, please don’t see these rankings as set in stone. I could have very easily ranked some of these contracts differently, depending on how I feel about how a particular player will perform going forward. The point is that there are a lot of bad contracts in baseball, and the ones listed below are some of the worst of the worst.

A Post-Nuke Fenway Park Is In “Fallout 4”

Sharp-eyed James McKenna spotted the above image in the trailer, which appears for only a few frames. It does seem to be Fenway Park, rusted and repaired and now serving as some sort of redoubt. It’s not an exact replica of any specific part of Fenway, but given the batter sculpture and loading bays and traffic bollards, they appear to have taken a few liberties with the Gate B entrance.

Confusion within the Diamondbacks? Prospect Peter O’Brien’s position still undetermined

This was news. Only a couple of days prior, O’Brien had been called a potential everyday, big-league catcher by manager Chip Hale. Shortly after the tweet was sent out it was confirmed by a Diamondbacks official….........

Starlin Castro wants to take charge of his problems - Chicago Tribune

Castro, however, has an issue with his own lack of urgency that he claims has led to many of his six fielding errors in his past 11 games.

“The errors come when I stay back,” said Castro, who has committed 12 errors this season. “Simple as that. If I have time to attack the ball, I’ll never make an error. If I stay back, I’ll make an error because I really don’t move my feet. I stay back and ball travels more and has a chance to make a bad hop. If you attack the ball, I use my legs ...

Nationals’ Strasburg Diagnosed With Strained Left Trapezius - NYTimes.com

Washington manager Matt Williams said Tuesday the trapezius was the cause of the neck and upper back discomfort. Strasburg is 3-5 with a 6.55 ERA in 10 starts and failed to last four innings in four of five outings in May.

New York Mets’ six-man rotation about protecting arms, young and old - Mets Blog - ESPN

Of course, they don’t even know if it will be effective.

“It’s not without precedent. That’s the significant thing,” said John Thorn, the official historian for Major League Baseball. “In baseball, almost everything has precedent. Even when we went from a one-man rotation to a two, or from a two to a three, it was from the worry of overuse and the shrinking number of off-days. That has been a constant since the 1870s.

“The Mets are different in that it’s a ‘prophylactic’ use of the six-man ...

With Burns on third, Doyle flied to Moran in right. He trotted down to first. After the catch Burns started in from third and would have scored easily. Moran whipped the ball in, but ...
