BenFred: Harper would make the Cardinals must-see TV

Bryce Harper sure loves his shows.

It turns out he spends his off nights like Cardinals fans during the past three postseasons — on the couch, clicker in hand, trying to dodge the sting of watching other teams’ champagne celebrations.

A recent Washington Post column named the TV series the Nationals star is into these days. “Suits,” “Yellowstone” and even some old-school “Gray’s Anatomy.”

So, how would you react if Harper became a Cardinal?

Dodgers’ impressive run needs that final exclamation point

The Dodgers came within a victory of a winning the World Series last season.

That wasn’t much of a consolation, was it?

The Buffalo Bills once came within a Scott Norwood field goal of claiming a Super Bowl and that didn’t earn them a piece of the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Championships are all or nothing and the Bills still have an empty trophy cabinet. The four consecutive Super Bowl appearances they made are remembered less as an achievement and more as a failure for their inability to ...

Cincinnati Reds’ Shed Long, who can be a ‘game changer,’ is working on his consistency

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – A few hours before Shed Long made his debut in the Arizona Fall League Wednesday, Barry Larkin gave a scouting report of the 23-year-old second baseman.

He can hit for power. He can steal bases. He plays strong defense.

Batting leadoff for his Fall League team, Long showcased all of it. He went 1-for-4 with three RBI, two walks and one stolen base. The No. 8-ranked prospect in the Reds’ farm system by MLB.com, he’s trying to make the leap to the Majors.

The seven managerial decisions that could decide the NLCS

MILWAUKEE – The challenge is to guess right, and then hope a line drive finds a glove for no reason other than good fortune, and that’s the whole job. That, and keeping 25 men with little in common but their work clothing from inflicting permanent harm on each other. That, and agreeing with mostly everything sent down from your boss’ office. That, and appearing tranquil and not panic-stricken for the TV cameras.

That, and bearing the responsibility if any of the above happens to go ...

Yankees believe Luis Severino was tipping his pitches in ALDS, though there’s more to his struggles

Friday afternoon, one day before the Red Sox and Astros open the ALCS at Fenway Park, Yankees manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman will hold their annual end-of-season press conferences at Yankee Stadium. New York won 100 games this year, but a four-game ouster in the ALDS qualifies as a disappointing season.

Among the topics Boone and Cashman will surely be asked about: Luis Severino. The staff ace finished the regular season with a 3.39 ERA (129 ERA+) in 191 1/3 innings, ...

Chili Davis Reportedly Fired as Cubs Hitting Coach After 1 Season

The Chicago Cubs fired hitting coach Chili Davis after one season, according to Bruce Levine of WSCR-AM.

Davis, 58, was a three-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion during his playing career for the San Francisco Giants (1981-87), California Angels (1998-90, 1993-96), Minnesota Twins (1991-92), Kansas City Royals (1997) and New York Yankees (1998-99).

He hit .274 in his career with 350 home runs and 1,372 RBI.

So, who do they blame if the same thing happens next year?

Texas Rangers: Decline in single-game ticket sales has cost the Rangers an estimated $54 million in revenue since 2012 | SportsDay

Some people should NOT be allowed anywhere near a calculator.

In 2012, coming off a second consecutive World Series appearance, the Rangers set a club record with 3,460,280 tickets sold. They followed that with 3,178,273 tickets sold in 2013.

The drop from 2012 to this season is 1,353,173. That is the 10th-largest decrease within a seven-season window in baseball history.

Using the $40-per-ticket estimate, that also translates to a revenue shortfall of $54 million.

The Biggest Problem With Bullpenning - The Ringer

In his 1970 treatise on punishing pitchers, The Science of Hitting, Ted Williams advised aspiring sluggers that their first time at bat in a given game is “a key to effective hitting, a key to the day you are going to have and therefore a key to your baseball life.” For Williams, the primacy of the first plate appearance was simple. “You figure to face a pitcher three or four times in a game,” he wrote. “The more information you log the first time up, the better your chances the next ...

Decline in single-game ticket sales has cost the Rangers an estimated $54 million in revenue since 2012

In May, when fan interest had gone into a nosedive, the Rangers issued a statement to The Dallas Morning News in which the club said another decline in attendance would not impact the long-term payroll and baseball-operations budget.

That resolve is about to be tested.

The final numbers have been posted. For the Rangers, it was a bloodbath that will put a strain on finances and raise a question as to whether a disenchanted segment of the fan base can be retrieved.

The Rangers have yet to finalize their list of interviews for their vacant managerial spot, but have done significant due diligence on at least five external candidates, two sources confirmed Wednesday.

The Rangers are also giving strong consideration to internal candidates Don Wakamatsu, who finished the season as the interim manager, and assistant general manager Jayce Tingler, who finished the season as the bench coach, the sources confirmed.

MLB Wants Casinos to Pay It a Cut from Wagers Placed on the Sport

Kenny Gersh, Major League Baseball’s executive vice president of gaming, said the league is seeking a fee from casinos if sportsbooks are going to profit off legalized sports gambling.

How Alex Cora earned the Red Sox’s trust—and how he repaid it as they ended the Yankees’ season

NEW YORK – Long before he led the Boston Red Sox to a franchise-record 108 victories, before he drubbed the New York Yankees by managing a near-perfect postseason series, before the American League Championship Series beckoned and a World Series berth stood four victories away, Alex Cora needed a favor.

When he called Rick Porcello and Chris Sale in January, they were glad to hear from him. Over the previous two months, as he prepared to drop into the snake pit that is the Red Sox ...

Kris Bryant turned down huge multiyear deal

The Cubs made an attempt to lock up Kris Bryant to a multiyear deal in the neighborhood of $200 million, but the superstar third baseman turned down the deal in recent months, a source confirmed to MLB.com on Wednesday. ESPN’s Dave Kaplan was the first to report the offer and its rejection. The club has not confirmed such an offer.

Bryant and agent Scott Boras are inclined to proceed on a year-by-year salary increase through arbitration before Bryant becomes a free agent after the 2021 season. ...

Arizona Diamondbacks to explore MLB trade market as offseason begins

They will have to be very creative to get a team to take on a big chunk of his contract and bring back young talent.

Right-hander Zack Greinke is a possible example. He is owed more than $31 million a year over the next three seasons, and if the Diamondbacks were to find a taker – even if it meant paying down some of his contract – they potentially could bring back young talent in a trade and free up money to be spent strategically on smaller, upside plays in free agency.
