Mariners still talking to Melky, appear to be favorites to sign him - CBSSports.com

As was first reported here, the Mariners may be willing to get into the range of the Cruz deal, which was $57 million for four years. While Cabrera has been seeking a five-year deal, four is a very reasonable offer.

Minor League Salaries Challenged in New Antitrust Lawsuit

But exempted monopolistic trusts are the best kind of monopolistic trusts!

The Miranda suit alleges that MLB unlawfully suppresses minor league players’ salaries in a variety of ways. By subjecting North American amateur players to the first-year player draft each June, Major League Baseball prevents draftees from selling their services to the highest bidder — instead forcing them to negotiate with only a single team. MLB then artificially reduces the size of the signing bonuses that entry ...

Rays and Kriseman reach agreement to allow Hillsborough stadium search

Mayor Rick Kriseman and the Tampa Bay Rays have reached an agreement to let the team search for new stadium sites in Hillsborough County in exchange for payments to the city if the team leaves before its contract at Tropicana Field expires in 2027.

Kriseman wants to the City Council to discuss the agreement at its meeting on Thursday.

Payments would be based on how many years would remain on the Trop lease if the Rays left, starting at $4 million a season until December 2018, dropping to $3 ...

CBSSports: Mets, Giants, A’s, other clubs eye top Korean shortstop Jung-Ho Kang

Kang has consistently put up huge numbers in Korea and posted an amazing .364/.457/.733 slash line in 2014 for the Nexen Heores, hitting 39 home runs in 116 games. The big question is how those numbers translate, which is why he could be viewed as a bargain by some.

Yes, that is the question.  Any speculation on how this fellow’s skills translate?

Snyder: Veterans committee doesn’t elect anyone to Hall of Fame

Olbermann: Here’s a suggestion to the Veterans’ Committee: if you can’t vote anybody into the #BBHOF, at least vote yourself out of existence.

The Veterans Committee for the Baseball Hall of Fame has elected no one from the Golden Era ballot, MLB announced in a press conference Monday at the annual Winter Meetings.

The committee chose from a ballot of nine players—Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Minoso, Tony Oliva, Billy Pierce, Luis Tiant and Maury Wills—and one executive, ...

Indians Acquire Brandon Moss

In a widely anticipated swap, the Athletics have officially agreed to ship outfielder/first baseman/DH Brandon Moss to the Indians in exchange for minor league second baseman Joe Wendle.

Moss, 31, is projected by MLBTR/Matt Swartz to earn $7.1MM this year, his second-to-last of arbitration eligibility. He is an accomplished power bat, with a 135 OPS+ and 76 home runs over the last three years…

Wendle, a 24-year-old prospect, did not rate among the Indians’ top ten prospects in the recent ...

Fred Blanding, former University of Michigan mound star, native of Birmingham, Mich., and for several years a pitcher on the Cleveland club, says he will not pitch for the Naps next year if Joe Birmingham continues as manager of that club. Blanding is sore on Birmey and says that he was badly treated last year.

He does not threaten to join the Federals, nor does he ask for more pay, he simply says he won’t play another year under Birmingham.

How Scott Boras’ demands cloud market for Max Scherzer | New York Post

If pitcher arms are really like autos, I’m assuming Boras will offer Scherzer along with a 1000 innings pitched warranty.

Boras has told me once the trade market fully clarifies, Scherzer will be pursued robustly based on the comparative lack of wear and tear on the righty’s special arm. So it is near certain Scherzer will not sign during the Winter Meetings.

Rollins may have considered Yanks but won’t waive no-trade for Mets - CBSSports.com

Scratch Jimmy Rollins off the Mets’ shortstop list.

The Phillies have told the Mets and some other teams that Rollins isn’t willing to waive his no-trade clause at this time, scuttling any chance for a trade involving the Mets and those other teams. It isn’t known whether Rollins might change his mind, but that is apparently his current stance.

After Thomas de Wolf signed with the New York Mets in 2008 to become the first player born and raised in Belgium in the Minor Leagues, Belgian Baseball has a second prospect. 18-year-old outfielder Sam Buelens, who becomes 19 on December 27, signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 2014 Buelens played for the Borgerhout Squirrels and won the championship in the Belgian Division I. He appeared in 34 games and batted .348 (OBP .448/SLG .430) with six extra base hits, 50 runs, 23 RBI and 31 stolen ...

As you may have noticed, I’ve been working on the server and making some software updates. The downtime was required so I can move forward with some of the things on my off-season to-do list. I hope the outages didn’t inconvenience you too much.

First up on my to-do list was setting things up so I could turn off advertising for those of you who generously donated to support the site in 2014. Although automating the process is still on my list, I have turned off advertising on accounts that ...

Didi Gregorius isn’t short on class and poise: scout - NY Daily News

Contrast this article with the other one I posted today. He’s either a guy who “thinks too much” or a “real easygoing guy”.

McManaman: Didi Gregorius’ stint as Derek Jeter’s replacement won’t last long

Thinking…

There’s a reason why two teams have already given up on Gregorius before he turns 25. He can’t hit. That’s why he couldn’t even crack the starting lineup on the worst team in baseball this past season.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said to have sharp baseball mind | Tampa Bay Times

So people don’t think Kevin Cash is very bright?

“Kevin Cash is smarter than what people think he is,” Boston DH David Ortiz said Friday in the Dominican Republic. “We played together and he was a guy that, his knowledge about the game was beyond guys that play the game every day. That’s what kept him playing as long as he played — his knowledge, the way he approached the game, the way he looked at the game.”

Will winter meetings ignite quiet Phillies’ offseason? | Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

The Phillies don’t agree with the adage that “it’s better to trade a guy a year too early than a year too late.”

The Phillies’ slow-moving offseason can be traced to two factors. First, as that exec said above, not a lot of teams are knocking down the Phillies’ door for their players. In short, many of the players the Phillies are trying to move have flaws ranging from advanced age, to high salaries, to declining production. The second factor in the Phils’ sluggish offseason is the rest of ...

Always innovating, Melvin open to new outfield alignments | MLB.com

Doug Melvin, innovator.

Melvin was ahead of his sport’s metric timeline. The Brewers began extensive shifting, including for right-handed batters, in 2004, when manager Ned Yost shared his boss’s foresight.
“Yost was very open-minded,” Melvin recalled of the American League champion Royals’ current skipper. “We had enough data to prove the shift worked against certain hitters. We were one of the first to put three guys on the left side of second base for right-handed hitters. A lot of teams ...
