Dodgers, Astros redefining starter use—and winning

Why? Because as we saw last October, when the games really begin to matter, the traditional roles go out the window. “Starters” and “relievers” don’t matter nearly so much as “pitchers” do, because it’s simply about getting 27 outs as effectively as possible. More and more, that means starters leaving early and relievers coming in often, rather than having one pitcher turn over a lineup several times—because such a strategy no longer correlates as well to actually winning games as well as it ...

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, August 3, 1917:

George Kelly, the 21-year-old utility player of the New York Giants, was purchased by the Pirates last night, according to an announcement made by Pittsburgh officials.

Kelly will probably get a chance today to play first base for Bezdek’s club…The rangy player had little chance of landing a regular job with the Giants on account of the surplus of high-grade talent which surrounds John J. McGraw.

High Pockets got into eight games with the Pirates, who ...

Dan Duquette explains the Orioles’ frequent trades of interational signing bonus slots

“We’ve been utilizing the international slot money to help us acquire some pitching to help our team,” Duquette said. “A lot of the other clubs will invest it in pitching to help us in the future or players to help us in the future. We use it to try to strengthen our pitching staff now while we have a window of opportunity with the position players we have here. That’s just utilizing a trade resource to impact your team now rather than three, four, five years down the road.” ...Read More...

Fangraphs: Lars Anderson Discovers Japan

I loved everything about this article. The umpires, the practice players, Manny Ramirez givin’ out nicknames.

“What is lacking in profanity between umpires and players is made up for by the music that is played during batting practice and the game. Apparently, all of the music with English lyrics is unedited.

“The other day, they played Eminem’s seminal hit, ‘My Name Is.’ This track was pre-sobriety Eminem, when his work delighted the kids while horrifying the parents. The song ...

The Kid Who Didn’t Die At Riverfront Stadium

On April 22, 1981, an Ohio teenager named Randy Kobman skipped school to go to Riverfront Stadium to see the Cincinnati Reds play the Atlanta Braves. In the bottom of the 8th inning, Reds slugger George Foster fouled a pitch from Gaylord Perry into the grandstands behind home plate. The ball caromed off the the press box and headed back toward the field. Kobman, sitting in the front row of seats in the stadium’s second deck, moved toward the aisle to make a play for the bouncing ball. He ...

Bill James: Career Won-Lost Record

The purpose of this research is to try to get a clear answer to this question:  Over the course of a substantial career, does a pitcher’s won-lost record become a reasonably reliable measurement of how good he really was?  In other words, we know that in a single season, a pitcher can pitch extremely well and be stuck with a won-lost record of 12-15, just because his team doesn’t score runs for him, while another pitcher—a teammate even—might pitch not as well, but might wind up with ...

Pudge’s induction, voting debates and more: A Q&A with National Baseball Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson

“Writers have done a very good and discerning job of making sure those that are in that gallery of plaques belong there. I think you would be hard-pressed to find anybody in that gallery that doesn’t belong, but you surely can find people on the outside for whom you can make the case.”

The Complicated Life and Death of Hideki Irabu

No one had noticed anybody come or go for days when, just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, a man emerged from a tidy three-bedroom house near the end of a cul-de-sac in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. His screams pierced the suburban idyll of the affluent neighborhood, with its hilltop homes and panoramic views up toward Los Angeles and out over the Pacific. Deputies from the L.A. County sheriff’s department arrived quickly. In one of the bedrooms, they found the friend the man had come ...

Roster maneuvering would give Yankees ideal rotation setup | New York Post

Six starters isn’t a good idea.

Because these Yankees, as they try to capture their first American League East title since 2012, will be best served with a six-man rotation as long as all six of their current options remain healthy. Actually, going with six represents the Yankees’ optimal likelihood of keeping all six guys, not a one of whom lacks concern about either health or innings limits, active and productive.

“In theory, it sounds great,” Girardi said before the Yankees fell short ...

Andrew Benintendi, one year later: How Boston Red Sox stud OF has managed peaks and valleys since MLB debut | masslive.com

Since April, Benintendi has been a first-hand witness to the growing pains of the majors.

The 23-year-old hasn’t been able to find a groove at the plate all season, hitting .204 in May, .295 in June, then .222 in July.

“I feel like this year especially it’s been more frustrating because obviously these pitchers have got a scouting report on me and I’ve got one on them and it’s just this game of going back and forth,” Benintendi said. “Definitely still learning how people try to pitch me and ...

Texas Rangers: Does road the Rangers appear to be heading down lead to the eventual departure of Adrian Beltre? | SportsDay

“Yes, it absolutely would change my mind,” Beltre said Tuesday before the Rangers hit three long home runs and still lost 8-7 to Seattle. “At this stage of my career, I’m not here for a rebuild. But I don’t think it will be. I think there is a possibility of this team playing better this year. I’m still focused on this year and don’t want to think about it right now, but it would change things for me.”

General manager Jon Daniels said bluntly Tuesday that Beltre need not worry.

“I ...

Pittsburgh Press, August 2, 1917:

Dr. Richard C. Hoblitzel, first baseman of the Boston American League baseball team, has volunteered and undergone examination for a commission in the dental reserve corps, it was announced today. Dr. Hoblitzel said he was uncertain when he was likely to be called.

Just your everyday “quality starting first baseman in his late 20s going to France to be a military dentist” story.

Pittsburgh Press, August 1, 1917:

Ping Bodie says he was chatting with [Walter] Johnson one day and remarked that if Johnson would fire one every now and then close to the batter’s skull, few would stay up to the plate and try to get a hit. This is what Johnson said:

“No, Ping; I never tried to hit any batter, and I never will. The minute any manager tries to get me to hurl one at a batter’s head, that quick I will cut that team. If I cannot beat them honestly, I will lose.”

Between Johnson and ...

One drunken mistake can change your life forever. Just ask Toronto Blue Jays fan Ken Pagan

You might not recognize Pagan’s name, but if you’re even a casual follower of baseball, you know what he did.

Last October, during the seventh inning of the American League wild card game between the Jays and the Baltimore Orioles at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, a beer can flung from the stands nearly hit an Orioles outfielder in the middle of play.

Sports commentary tends to embrace hyperbole, so let’s just say it felt like the Lob Heard Around the World…

But there’s a disconnect ...

In a broad sense, we definitely had trial balloons going up on all different fronts. Small ...

Olney: Grading the 2017 trade deadline - Buster Olney Blog- ESPN ($)

This may be true for most teams but it’s not true for all teams. Don’t get me wrong, though, it’s not easy. Teams with the most resources (including brain power) can, and should, do both.

The other day, an evaluator talking about the landscape of the trade market cited the essential purpose for the trade deadline: Either you advance and attack your weaknesses, or you retreat strategically. As best they can within their context, teams should either work to improve their playoff hopes or they ...

Cleveland Indians Scribbles: Why it was wise to keep Francisco Mejia—Terry Pluto | cleveland.com

Some of the best trades are the ones you don’t make.

11. Did you notice that Lucroy was traded by Texas to Colorado for ... get this ... a player to be named later! Heading towards free agency, Lucroy is batting .242 (.635 OPS) with four homers and 27 RBI. The two-time All-Star catcher had an awful season at a very bad time. Remember that Mejia, Yu Chang, Greg Allen and Scott Armstrong were all headed to Milwaukee in the deal for Lucroy last July. He vetoed it and was later traded to Texas.
