The slow-but-sure demise of the Batavia Muckdogs (New York-Penn) franchise might soon open the door to a new chapter of Minor League Baseball history. If all goes according to plan, the Muckdogs will soon become the only majority black-owned team in baseball.
The Muckdogs have reached an agreement to sell the franchise to a group of black businessmen in the Washington area who plan to move the team next season to the D.C. suburb of Waldorf, Md., according to three sources who requested ...
According to then Dodgers general manager Fred Claire, the Piazza swap was negotiated by Fox television executives without his knowledge. Their intention was not to improve the Dodgers but to incentivize Marlins owner H. Wayne Huizenga to sell Fox a Florida regional sports network he owned. As Claire later pointed out, there was nothing typical about the trade. It happened in May, not at the trading deadline. Piazza didn’t go to a contender but to a team bent on losing 100 games. It wasn’t ...
According to Dave, Martin O’Malley might have a better chance of being the Democrat nominee.
See that flat line across the bottom? That’s the Phillies. Their 24-17 start hasn’t moved the needle, at all, on our forecasts expectations for their chances of reaching the postseason. Okay, that’s not exactly true; they’ve gone from a 0.1% chance of winning one of the two Wild Card spots in our preseason forecast all the way up to a 0.3% chance of getting to the play-in game now. But their odds ...
Considering the vast amount of time that is lost at every game by the custom of solemnly pawing, inspecting and arguing over every foul ball that happens to bounce off a wall, why not save the time and give somebody a nice, new job? Why not have at every ball park an official known as “Ball Inspector,” whose duty it shall be to receive all fouls returned to the field, pass upon them and then return them to the pitcher or condemn them as unfit for further play?
The Red Sox do hold club options that max out at $16 million for the next two seasons. For now, the organization is respecting Ortiz’s choice to retire with more than $150 million earned and burgeoning businesses he wants to nurture.
“I’m happy with the decision that I made,” Ortiz said, “and my feet are happy with the decision that I made, and my wife is happy with the decision that I made. I’ve got to wait until next year when I ...
Last year’s fluke record raised expectations to unrealistic levels. The Twins, as they were at the start of last season, are in the middle of a rebuild.
Amid all the losing the Twins have assembled a highly rated farm system. The young core—first-round picks Byron Buxton and Jose Berrios, plus Smith-signed international prospects Miguel Sano and Max Kepler—is one they can potentially build around. This is a team on the rise, albeit with a massive step backward taking place this season. The ...
“It’s no secret,” Weaver said. “My stuff isn’t that great.”
It is unfair to compare almost any pitcher to Kershaw, who sports a 22-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season and has struck out at least 10 batters in his last six starts. But the juxtaposition is especially sharp with Weaver, whose neck and shoulder stiffness have transformed his pitches into sluggish, inconsistent offerings.
According to Fangraphs, Weaver’s fastball is averaging just 82.8 MPH this season.
CUTSHAW CLOUTS OUT FREAK HIT; BALL CLIMBS FENCE; A HOME RUN
Cutshaw, Bewildered All the Way Through, Runs Back and Forth Between Bases, Not Knowing What to Do Until Some One Tells Him He Has Made a Home Run; Then He Walks Home, Scoring Tally.
This one’s completely absurd and the whole article is a fun read. Apparently the ball hit something on the fence on the fly, bounced straight up, balanced on the top of the wall for what seemed like an eternity, then dropped ...
The problem can only be managed. Hopefully, Collins will protect Wright from himself.
“This is the first time this year where I’ve come to the ballpark where I felt the significance of it—the back. Most of the days have been fairly mediocre. Today was more toward the bad. I didn’t really know what to expect. I thought the extra treatment and the extra preparation that I put in would help. And I wanted to give it a go. Terry just kind of said no-go. More than anything, I’m mad at the situation. ...
Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon has been living a double life that gives new meaning to his nickname “Big Sexy” — siring two secret love children with a woman while married to his devoted wife of 21 years, The Post has learned.
The 42-year-old hurler has been dragged into Manhattan court by Alexandra Santos, 38, who claims the $7 million-a-year player is a deadbeat dad who failed to pay child support for their elementary-school-age kids.
The Red Sox are halting Rodriguez’s rehab stint after the pitcher told the club he is still experiencing soreness in his right knee.
“It’s something he came to us (with),” Boston manager John Farrell told reporters in Kansas City on Tuesday. “We were trying to evaluate the performances and talk to him about what he was feeling and talk to him about what we’d like to see, if possible, and that’s where he revealed, that, he’s on occasion feeling this.”
The alarm has gone off concerning Michael Pineda’s miserable season.
“It’s easy to say it will turn, but it’s been too long,’’ pitching coach Larry Rothschild said following Pineda’s latest lousy outing Tuesday night at Chase Field, where the Diamondbacks hung a 5-3 loss on the right-hander in front of 30,913. “We are almost a quarter of the way through his starts. We need to straighten it out, especially in the stretch. He is going through a major bump in the road right ...
Three hours is too long. I love baseball. I’d love it even more if the games were 20-30 minutes shorter.
Through Monday, the average time of a nine-inning game this season was 3 hours, 26 seconds. At the same stage of last season, about six weeks after MLB implemented much-ballyhooed new pace-of-game rules, the average game time was 2:53:33. That pace did slow, however, and the average time by season’s end wound up at 2:56:14.
“We’re thrilled to be keeping Double-A, New York Mets baseball here in the community but with a new name that everyone in Binghamton can call its own. The new name will bring in a new era that proudly represents a crown jewel of the community.”
The Binghamton Mets were bought after the 2015 season by Florida-based Main Street Baseball, but the sale was rejected by the Eastern League after the buyers announced that they wanted to move the team to Wilmington, ...
OAKLAND, Calif.—Major League Baseball gave Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor an eight-game suspension on Tuesday for his role in a weekend brawl with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.
Heyman, citing an unnamed source, said Odor plans to appeal the suspension.
Without naming sources, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan reported that Odor will also face a $5,000 fine.
Jeff Francoeur knows a good airline to get him out of town.
The Braves fired manager Fredi Gonzalez on Tuesday, after one of the worst half-seasons in the franchise’s 140-year history was followed by its worst-ever start to a season. They have a majors-worst 7-28 record.
An announcement of the firing and his replacement was expected from the team later Tuesday.
Although it’s widely known that the Braves are in the midst of a rebuilding effort that gutted the major league team while ...
But the Mets got good news on Monday when the left-handed Matz visited a doctor and was found to have no ligament damage in his throwing elbow, according to a person who was briefed on the matter. The person requested anonymity because the Mets made no formal announcement.
