Bryce Harper Has a New, Lower Gear

tl;dr Harper is not swinging for the moon and it’s paying off.

What’s interesting, at least to this author, is that Harper is willing to tinker with a gift that allowed him to reach the majors at 19. What’s perhaps troubling for the opposition is that he continues to look for ways to improve despite already possessing an NL MVP on his resume and returning close to that form thus far in 2017. He’s still just 24 — he won’t turn 25 until October — and is four months younger than Aaron ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-5-2017

New York Sun, July 5, 1917:

Barney Dreyfuss and the Pittsburg Pirates slipped over a long shot on the baseball public when the announcement was made last night that Hugo Bezdek had been selected to succeed Jimmy Callahan as manager of the Pirates.
...
Bezdek is assuming charge of the Pirates with possibly scanter qualifications, judging from his past experiences, than any other pilot has in the big leagues for many a day.

The new Buccaneer boss has never managed a ball club in organized ranks. ...

OTP 4 July 2017: On July 4, Palm Springs celebrates with family, fireworks, baseball

Thousands gathered in Palm Springs to celebrate the Fourth of July on Tuesday with distinctly all-American traditions: family fun, fireworks and a baseball game.

As temperatures climbed above 110 on Tuesday afternoon, valley residents gathered to await a Palm Springs Power baseball game and fireworks show. They bought water, beer and snow cones as the opening pitch approached.

“It’s very American,” said Rafael Candelario, a Marine stationed at Twentynine Palms who drove to Palm Springs for ...

Benintendi hits two homers as Red Sox sparkle in Texas

Price, it has since been learned, sharply criticized Eckersley for an on-air comment about Eduardo Rodriguez pitching poorly in a minor-league injury rehabilitation game that day.

“Standing up for my teammates,” Price said. “Whatever crap I catch for that, I’m fine with it.”

Logan Morrison isn’t happy about MLB inviting Gary Sanchez to the Home Run Derby

Rays 1B Logan Morrison criticized MLB’s decision to include Yankees C Gary Sanchez in the All-Star Home Run Derby.

“Gary shouldn’t be there,’’ Morrison said. “Gary’s a great player, but he shouldn’t be in the Home Run Derby.”

Morrison has a pretty good case to be included, with 24 homers that, going into play Tuesday, ranked second most in the majors. Sanchez, who joins teammate Aaron Judge among the four AL players in the eight-man field, had 13 homers.

“I remember when I had 14 home ...

Cardinals call up Weaver, vow that he won’t ‘just sit’ in the bullpen | Cardinal Beat | stltoday.com

“The best place for a rookie pitcher is long relief.” ~ Earl Weaver.

“We’re going to give him a chance just like everybody else down there really,” said Matheny. “We don’t want to take him out of the Triple-A rotation to have him just sit down there (in the bullpen) and have him be an emergency-type backup guy. I just don’t want to hem him in from the beginning, that he’s only going to be in a situation where we need a guy to cover, three, four five innings.

“I plan on ...

AP: 1918 World Series key in US love affair with national anthem

Happy Fourth!

The World Series was in town, with the Cubs hosting Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox. The Chicago games were played at Comiskey Park, the home of the White Sox, instead of their new home at Wrigley Field, what was called Weegham Park at the time, because it held more fans. But in a city jittery over the bombing and weary from the war, Game 1 that day attracted fewer than 20,000 fans, the smallest World Series crowd in years.

When they got there, they didn’t make much noise, though ...

SI: Mets prospect Logan Taylor injured after being attacked by homeless man

Finally, here’s an injury to a Mets player Ron Darling can’t blame on the training staff.

Taylor, who was in town with the Las Vegas 51s to play the Salt Lake Bees, was approached by 33-year-old Joshua Cruz, who was carrying a tire iron and a sock filled with rocks, detective Greg Wilking told ...

Stroman says he has blister on hand

Toronto Blue Jays ace Marcus Stroman says he left his start against the New York Yankees Monday due to a blister on his throwing hand.

After the Jays’ 6-3 loss to the Yankees - the team’s fifth in a row - Stroman told reporters that he has never dealt with blisters in his career and called it an “epidemic” this year in baseball.

“Just got a blister,” said Stroman to MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm. “I’ve never had a blister ever in my life. Nothing remotely close to having a blister. It’s crazy. ...

Home Run Derby slugfest: Yankees’ Judge joins Marlins’ Stanton in lineup

Marlins Park is one of the stingiest ballparks in the majors in terms of yielding home runs. Only AT&T Park in San Francisco has permitted fewer home runs since Marlins Park opened in 2012.

But it might not stand a chance in the Home Run Derby on July 10.

On Monday, an array of sluggers — most notably New York Yankees sensation Aaron Judge — agreed to take part in the slugging contest that serves as an appetizer to the All-Star Game one day late

With defending champion Giancarlo Stanton ...

MLB umpire Angel Hernandez sues league for racial discrimination

MLB umpire Angel Hernandez has filed a lawsuit against the league and commissioner Rob Manfred alleging the league discriminates against minority umpires, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Hernandez’s suit claims that MLB is biased against minority umps when it comes to high-profile positions. There has only been one minority crew chief in league history and only one minority umpire has worked the World Series since 2011.

“The selection of these less qualified, white individuals ...

MLB—Rays, Red Sox invest in tighter international talent market

The top of this year’s class does not include a talent like that, nor anyone quite as exciting as Venezuelan infielder Kevin Maitan ,whom signed with the Braves for $4.75 million last year. The two consensus prospects in this class are Venezuelan catcher Daniel Flores, set to sign with the Red Sox, and Dominican infielder Wander Samuel Franco*, who finalized a deal with the Rays. Flores, a promising defender with prodigious arm strength and power, is expected to sign for just north of $3 ...

Hummel: After 56 seasons, La Russa has plenty to offer in new role | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

This argument is so 2001. It isn’t, and never was, an either or choice.

Mets’ emerging catching prospect could make d’Arnaud expendable | New York Post

Interesting perspective.

“The first time I ever met Yadi, the first thing he asked me was what kind of relationship I had with my pitchers,” Nido said over the phone about the Cardinals catcher, whom he lists as an idol and friend. “From a guy I’ve never met, he asked about the relationships. And that kind of opened my eyes, and I realized even him, who’s had that much success, is not worried about hitting primarily. It’s about handling your pitching staff, knowing everyone on the ...

NL All-Star Zack Cozart expects Cincinnati Reds teammate Joey Votto to deliver on donkey pledge

Cozart said on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight that when Votto made the donkey pledge to him, “it started off as just ha, ha, ha ... but it got real really quick.”

He said that he expects Votto to fulfill his promise and now has to search for some land for the donkey to roam.

“Oh yeah, anybody that knows Joey Votto knows that donkey is going to be here,” he said. “This is happening—a legit, real donkey. No name picked out, but that will be the next order of business, that’s for sure.”

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-3-2017

Butte Post, July 3, 1917:

Blind in one eye, William Forsythe, a 19-year-old pitcher, is trying to make his way in baseball fame despite his infirmity and a crippled pitching hand, like the famous “Miner”’ Brown.

Forsythe lost the thumb of his right hand several years ago, but a stumplike portion allows him to get a firm grip on the ball. He has a choice assortment of curves and pitches with great speed and control. He recently fanned 35 men in two games, holding his opponents to three hits in ...
