How the Cleveland Indians Turned Their Crushing World Series Loss Into a Historic 2017 Season

Lots of interesting tidbits in here.  I’m not just saying that because the Cubs won the World Series.

In Game 7, Indians ace Corey Kluber failed to strike out a batter for the first time as a major league starter. After pitching just four innings, he watched the rest of the game on a television in a small room behind the Indians’ dugout, where he saw Davis homer off Chapman to tie the game in the eighth. (The lockers in the Cubs’ clubhouse had just been covered with protective plastic in ...

Fulton County [Pennsylvania] News, September 27, 1917:

“I hate to discourage you, but your professional baseball players will make bloomin’ poor bombardiers, unless they go through a lot of training,” is the way Lieut. Lester Elliott of the Australian army expresses the situation, following a morning’s exercise with the Cleveland Indians.

“One of the training stunts for the soldiers in the intensive camps in France requires that the bombers shall throw almost without a rest for two hours. ...

Yankees Fan Ejected For Tipping Pitch Locations To Gary Sanchez

Everyone involved said afterward that it was bizarre but that the umpires handled the situation properly. As for the ejection, Joe Girardi said, “Rightfully so. That shouldn’t happen.” Rays manager Kevin Cash said “The Yankees handled it really well and got him out of there.”

CATCHER: Chance Sisco, Norfolk/Orioles

For the second straight year, the 2013 second-round pick gets my vote as the top catcher. Sisco, 22, played most of this season at Norfolk after getting a four-game “cup of coffee” with the club’s top minor-league affiliate to end 2016. In 97 games with the Tides, he hit .267 with seven home runs, 47 RBIs and 23 doubles. Sisco’s offensive numbers were down across the board (his .736 OPS, for example, was about 80 percentage points lower than his ...

Breaking down Girardi’s likely playoff rotation strategy | New York Post

. Don’t overthink this.

Luis Severino will start Wednesday night against the Rays, putting him in line to start, with five days off, the wild-card game. Brian Kenny, the MLB Network’s intellectual provocateur, floated a fascinating idea on Tuesday: Save Severino for Game 1 of the ALDS, probably in Cleveland against the Indians — and consequently the do-or-die Game 5, if necessary — and turn the wild-card affair into a “Bullpen Game,” starting the fireballing Chad Green and working ...

Clinching scenario: Chris Sale could use a rest

Neither case is ideal. Eight days is a long time between starts.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Tuesday night he hadn’t decided whether Chris Sale would pitch again in the regular season. If Sale did, it would be in the regular-season finale on Sunday. But that would mean he would face the Houston Astros, with a potential rematch four days later in Game 1 of the Divisional Series.

Of course, this all presumes that the Red Sox clinch the AL East.

If Sale doesn’t pitch, he’ll get eight ...

Baseball league to allow agents starting in 2018

Following a meeting of its board of directors, the KBO said only those who have passed a qualification test set by the Korea Professional Baseball Players Association will be allowed to represent KBO players. Each agent or agency may only work with a maximum 15 players, and with no more than three players from the same club.

That’s an interesting restriction. I wonder how it’ll play out?

Molina undergoing MLB concussion protocol

Molina took the first shot directly off his mask and fell over frontwards onto his knees. He was soon back to his feet as Matheny and trainer Chris Conroy came from the dugout.

“That first one obviously gave us some concern,” said Mike Matheny. “Went out and saw him, the medical team was okay. He was ready to go, he just needed a second.”

“We’ve been through that conversation many, many times. He was fine. Trainer kind of put him through a couple of things and everything was ...

Bridgeport Evening Farmer, September 26, 1917:

NEW YORK BETTOR MAKES $120,000 BY GIANTS VICTORY

With the National League pennant clinched on Monday, wagers were paid off yesterday, and [Arnold] Rothstein’s confidence in the ability of the Giants to capture the flag—a confidence born last fall—netted him the tidy sum of $120,000.

He wagered on the Giants at odds varying from 100 to 1 to even money, but the bulk of it was places at 5 to 6.

Goodness. It’s almost like Arnold Rothstein knows what’s ...

Mookie Betts left the game in the eighth inning with left wrist pain, Eduardo Nunez reaggravated his knee injury and left in the fifth inning and Drew Pomeranz, the Red Sox’ clear No. 2 starter, lasted only two-plus innings, allowing five runs while pitching with lower-than-normal velocity for the second straight game.

Everybody’s gonna party like it’s 2003 (or 2004)?! Aaron F. Boone! Bloody Sock! Grady F. Little! Varitek vs. Jeter! The Slap! Big Papi! What else are we forgetting?

Baseball’s postseason has regularly been swallowed up by the NFL, and despite lesser TV ratings and alarm bells going off over long-term CTE issues, the NFL continues to dominate — last year’s Cubs-Indians World Series was an exception to the rule.

But there’s a chance that baseball could again have a postseason to ...

OTP 25 September 2017: CC Sabathia won’t visit the White House if the Yankees win the World Series

Ballplayers, however, will likely continue to speak up. The latest: Yankees starter CC Sabathia, who was asked yesterday whether he would visit the White House if the playoff-bound Yankees won the World Series. From the Daily News:

“Never. I just don’t believe in anything that is Trump. So there wouldn’t be any reason for me to go at all. I just think it’s stupid. I just think it’s dumb that he’s addressing players and stuff that he shouldn’t be. But it is what it is, and ...

DeWitt Q-&-A: Matheny is ‘right guy to lead us into the future’

I completely wrote off this team earlier this year. Although they might fall short in their playoff push, they still proved me wrong.

DG: The team hasn’t made a deal like that where it packages a group of prospects for a single player since 2009, for Holliday. Are you more reluctant to make a deal like that?

BD: I think clubs who have premium players have high expectations in terms of prospects. They want your best prospects, the very top. And multiples of them. Even close to the major ...

Dodgers’ Dave Roberts keeps Yasiel Puig on bench after baserunning blunder - LA Times

After a season filled with positive press, a crack in the narrative is exposed.

“When I put a player in the lineup, every situation, every pitch, every out is important,” he said. “It’s important that I guys I write in the lineup, I can trust them. So that’s all I’m going to say about it.”

Puig took off for second base with two outs in the ninth inning but was thrown out when he didn’t slide, saying he felt something in his left ankle as he neared the base. Roberts said Puig was ...
