For ballpark design, it could be different game in future - Chicago Tribune

Seats with touchscreen monitors? Sorry but what is this guy smoking? There is barely room (and sometimes no room) for cup holders. With smartphones, why would you even need a monitor?

Nor does NYU sports business professor Robert Boland. But he can envision seats with touchscreen monitors being installed, giving spectators access to the producer’s feed from the truck along with more statistics and maybe even bringing gambling to the stands.

“Or some sort of interactive community where (you can ...

Slate.com: WAR Means This

The art of sabermetrics—first brought to the mainstream by Michael Lewis’ 2003 book, Moneyball—is, essentially, the math of baseball. Since the book’s publication, a new breed of baseball personnel—such as the Cubs’ Theo Epstein (formerly of the Red Sox) and Boston’s Ben Cherington—have followed in Oakland A’s general manager and Moneyball star Billy Beane’s footsteps, and the way a winning team is built has changed fundamentally.

The most crucial statistic to understanding ...

How to Cloak Your DNS to watch the Dodgers on MLB.TV

The most subversive thing I’ve ever read in the LA Times.  Columnist Chris Erskine gives detailed instructions on how to mask your DNS to watch Dodger games on MLB.TV, avoiding antiquated blackout rules and telling Time Warner cable to…..well, who needs them anymore?

Manfred: Rose will be allowed to be part of All-Star Game

What are the odds?

Commissioner Rob Manfred says Pete Rose will be allowed to participate in activities surrounding this summer’s All-Star Game in his hometown of Cincinnati.

Rose, baseball’s career hits leader and a former Reds star player and manager, agreed to a lifetime ban from the sport in 1989 after a Major League Baseball investigation concluded he bet on his team to win while he was managing the club.

Manfred said initial thoughts about Rose’s role at the July 14 game will come from ...

The early leaders in MLB’s “Franchise Four” thing have been announced

Posnanski: The Best Pitcher In Baseball History

Poz’s selection may angry up the blood.

How good was Roger Clemens? Well, yesterday I pointed out that his career is better than Sandy Koufax and Johan Santana.

But Matthew Namee — who was once Bill James’ research assistant — does me one better. He sent Tom Tango a comparison that shows that Roger Clemens is, basically, Sandy Koufax PLUS Pedro Martinez, the two greatest short-career pitchers in the game’s history.

How does he figure that? Start with Pedro:

Clemens in Boston: 81 WAR, ...

Julio Lugo charged with kidnapping, gun posession

Former Devil Rays infielder Julio Lugo (2003-2006) has been charged in court with kidnapping, according to multiple reports out of the Dominican Republic.

Lugo last professionally played baseball for los Leones del Escogido, and last played stateside for the Braves in 2011.

Lugo’s arrest warrant was issued in the cities of La Romana and Santo Domingo for kidnapping and the posession of fire arms. According to the paper, Lugo and four men held their hostage and his girlfriend at gunpoint, ...

Poz - Koufax not one of greatest living players

If I was listing the four living players who best exemplify what baseball means to me, I would include Koufax, Mays, Aaron and Rose, those players who filled my imagination as a boy. If I was to list the four most thrilling players who are still living, I might include Koufax and Rickey, Bonds and Pedro (or Ryan). If I had to list the four most iconic players still living, I might say Yogi, Mays, Aaron and Koufax.

But four greatest living players? Realistically, Koufax just isn’t on that ...

A Tale of Two Dingers – The Hardball Times

Interesting. Do chicks dig the backspin?

So my initial puzzle as to why there was such a great difference in distance between these two home runs has been resolved. Multiple analyses using both Home Run Tracker and StatCast data show the primary reason for the different distances is the backspin. Everything hangs together nicely. In fact, the closeness of the StatCast distance to the independently determined distance from Home Run Tracker provides additional confirmation that the TrackMan ...

Kris Bryant is starting in center field for the Cubs

A weird, but not necessarily wussy, decision.

No. 1 prospect Kris Bryant, who played exclusively third base in the minors and made his long-awaited big-league debut at third base last week, is starting in center field for the Cubs today.

Bryant got his feet wet in center field Wednesday night, shifting to the outfield from third base when Dexter Fowler left the game with a groin injury.

Fowler remains out of the lineup this afternoon against the Pirates, so manager Joe Maddon has Kris Bryant ...

Joe Nathan Out For Year With Torn UCL

I don’t know how you beat the Tigers now…

Tigers righty Joe Nathan has torn the ulnar collateral ligament as well as a tendon in his right elbow, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports on Twitter...

Nathan, 40, opened the year as Detroit’s closer despite a challenging 2014 season in which he posted a 4.81 ERA. He struck out just 8.4 batters per nine while walking 4.5 per nine, both of which were the worst marks of his career since he moved to the pen.

That was obviously not the output that the ...

Pittsburgh Press, April 23, 1915:

If J. Franklin Baker goes through with his determination to play with the Upland [Pennsylvania] team of the Delaware County league it will in all probability mean that he will never be permitted to play in organized baseball again.

“Baker can’t make a fool out of me,” said [Connie] Mack, “and if he thinks that he can have a little jaunt in the Delaware County league and then at his pleasure report to me and expect to find a place on my team, he has made the ...

Inside details of how A-Rod’s 660 fight with Yankees will play out

Does A-Rod even exist?

According to two sources familiar with the situation, when Rodriguez goes deep with number 660, the Yankees will have a precise period of time — two weeks, as per one of the sources — to declare this as a marketable milestone. If they were to do this, then Rodriguez would sign over the rights to his image and associated branding for the price of $6 million.

The same drill would go into effect should A-Rod tie Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and Bonds (762), as ...

Barry Bonds’ obstruction of justice conviction overturned

$55 million of your tax dollars, all for this.

or obstructing justice, a development that could help the former San Francisco Giants slugger win a place in baseball’s Hall of Fame.

The decision by an 11-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals leaves prosecutors without a single conviction against Bonds, who was the subject of a years-long investigation into illegal steroid use and was tried in 2011 in a federal court in San Francisco. The jury hung on perjury charges and ...

Chris Rock delivers seven-minute monologue on MLB’s diversity problem

NSFW

The decline of African-American players in Major League Baseball has been a hot-button topic for a few years.

In 2014, just 8.3 percent of big league players were African-American.

Comedian Chris Rock took on this matter in a hilarious, yet poignant seven-minute monologue for the latest edition of HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.”

Rock managed to explain his concerns while also dropping gems like this:

“Baseball isn’t 20 percent black anymore. It’s eight percent and falling ...

My opinion? Well, you know how some people are “on your side”, but you really, really wish they weren’t?...

Baseball agent Scott Boras wants “panels” consisting of baseball experts to help decide if a first-year player is worthy of making the team out of spring training…

“The union or somebody may come in and say they’ve made a claim that this player is major league-ready, and to place him in the minor leagues would not be appropriate from a skills standpoint. Then, all of a sudden, it’s ...
