Running list of 2014 40-man roster additions | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

On the surface, getting added to a 40-man roster may feel like a small move. It doesn’t guarantee a Major League spot. In fact by rule (and math), 15 of the players on said roster aren’t with the big club at any given time until September when rosters are allowed to expand.

But it does provide two things for the players involved. The first is protection. To be more specific, that’s protection from the Rule 5 Draft, coming up Dec. 11. Players who were 18 or younger when they signed their first ...

Female Sportswriter Asks: ‘Why Are All My Twitter Followers Men?’ | ThinkProgress

It makes good business sense for teams to engage with fans where the fans can be found, physically and virtually. But while food, drink, and shopping posts on Pinterest will bring women to a game or a team store, they won’t bring women into the sports discussion.
And in the long run, that’s not good for women sports fans, women sports reporters, or for sports and our broader, more informed conversations about them.

The article is an interesting read but…does it really matter? I come from ...

On Thursday Weeghman received a telephone call from Terre Haute, Ind.

The Phillies shouldn’t settle for a rational Cole Hamels trade - SBNation.com

The Phillies need to be looking for fair value, not an overwhelming win. Of course, determining fair value can be difficult. Ultimately it depends on the quality of a team’s talent evaluation skills, the player development people, and luck. If your scouts and metrics evaluate prospects well and your coaches help the players play to their potentials, a team can make fair deals. If the players don’t end up getting hurt once they get on your team (the luck part), everybody will talk about what a ...

Examining our assumptions about Pablo Sandoval

It’s dangerous using run-based park factors in projecting a batter’s performance in a new park. Some hitters are particularly suited for specific parks. From what I’ve seen I’d expect him to get a pretty nice boast coming to Fenway.

(Sandoval should expect a boost in his numbers if he moves from AT&T Park in San Francisco to Fenway Park — but not as much as you might think. Sandoval’s adjusted OPS+ last season was 111, the same as that of Brett Gardner, who posted a .749 OPS in ...

Update on Marlins’ free agent moves; Behind-the-scenes nuggets on Stanton negotiations | Sports Buzz

A bunch of Marlins tidbits.

All Marlins talk in the wake of today’s press conference for Giancarlo Stanton’s historic 13-year, $325 million deal:

### By accepting below-market salaries of $6.5 million and $9 million over the next two seasons, Stanton has given the Marlins flexibility to augment. And the Marlins are acting quickly.

According to a source, the Marlins have made a two-year, $20 million offer to free agent first baseman Adam LaRoche, who hit .259 with 26 homers and 92 RBI for ...

Red Sox Claim Juan Francisco

“We don’t need a DH because we have Dioner Navarro,” said no Juan ever.

The Red Sox have claimed Juan Francisco off waivers from the Blue Jays, Boston announced today…

Francisco is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to take home a $2.2MM payday through arbitration… Last year, Francisco posted a fairly typical .220/.291/.456 slash over 320 plate appearances for the Jays, swatting 16 home runs in the process.

Royals playoff run inspires team executive to come out

Mets unveil new dimensions at Citi Field - Newsday

Still, the Mets believe the added benefit of a more homer-friendly environment is worthwhile, especially because their young arms have healthy strikeout and ground-ball rates that should keep them from being burned by the changes. The Mets calculated they would have hit 17 more homers last season with the new dimensions compared to 10 more for opposing hitters. Lefties would have been the biggest beneficiaries.

Baseball Prospectus | Baseball Therapy: Against the Grind

We know that over the course of a season, plate discipline erodes as hitters presumably get more tired. It’s hard to get enough sleep out on the road and after a while even a fun job becomes just another job. Well, if players lose plate discipline, they are probably bleeding away strikes, and that can have a significant effect on a team’s chances. Maybe there are some managers who are just better at handling the grind, and in minimizing the penalty to be paid for fatigue and boredom at the end ...

The family legal fight over Ryan Howard’s finances

It’s sad that stuff like this goes on.

In addition to his struggles on the field, Howard was engaged in a nasty legal fight with his family over control of his finances, a fight that included his twin brother and lifetime confidant suing him for more than $2.7 million - and Howard countersuing with allegations of fraud and mismanagement of the fortune that he had amassed.
