Shane Baz is the player to be named later in the Chris Archer deal | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

This was a very good trade for the Rays.

Still, the Meadows-Glasnow-Baz price tag is significant, as will be the criticism general manager Neal Huntington takes in some circles for agreeing to it — an ironic twist, given the heat he previously was under for failing to materially improve the roster.

Considerable upside aside, Baz — and Meadows and Glasnow, for that matter — is far from a sure thing. If they all reach their peaks as Archer fails to reach his, it’ll be looked back upon as ...

How MLB’s Coldest Hitter Got Hot

In the span of a few months, Calhoun went from being colder than he’d ever been to about as hot as he’d ever been. “It’s definitely pretty extreme,” Calhoun said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever really experienced anything like it.” Almost no hitter ever has. Baseball Prospectus provided The Ringer with RPA+ data for all hitters in all calendar months going back to 1950 in which they recorded at least 80 plate appearances. Only one hitter — the Dodgers’ Ron Fairly in ...

Paul Zeise: The Pirates front office looks foolish — yet again | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I’m sure they don’t believe they are smarter than everyone. I’m pretty sure, though, they know they are smarter than Paul Zeise.

The Pirates are within striking distance of a wild-card berth with an exciting young pitching staff, and there is a strong chance they will finish the season with a winning record for the fourth time in 25 years.

These are the things fans and media should be talking about; instead, they are talking about biometric data, Clay Holmes and Casey Sadler. The thing is, the ...

Ronald Acuna hits two leadoff homers | MLB.com

I watched both Braves games yesterday. Acuna put on a real showcase of his skills. I know Juan Soto is getting some well deserved attention. Having watched the two play, Soto will be the better hitter but Acuna will be the better overall player. In pretty much equal playing time this year, bWAR currently gives Acuna the edge.

Latest bigotry reminds us that baseball is a white man’s game.

When Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones famously said two years ago that “baseball is a white man’s sport,” he was castigated in some corners, lauded in others, the bifurcated reaction a pretty reasonable foretelling of America today. Jones was right, of course. Major League Baseball is a white man’s sport. Its teams are owned, disproportionately, by white men. They are run, disproportionately, by white men. The league’s top executives are, disproportionately, white men. The ...

Toledo News-Bee, August 14, 1918:

Dazzy Vance, up for the steenth time, proved a hopeless case and Manager Miller Huggins of the Yankees has shipped him to Rochester in the International.

At this point, Vance was 27 years old and had allowed 22 runs and 23 walks in 33 big league innings. He didn’t make it back to the majors until 1922. If Dazzy didn’t have the least likely Hall of Fame career of all time, he’s gotta be close.

If you need a consistent, even-keeled manager, Red Sox bench coach Ron Roenicke is the guy

Isn’t this the point of the deadline? It’s supposed to be difficult.

1. There’s a movement within baseball to get rid of the waiver trading period and extend the non-waiver trade deadline until about mid-August. While there are trades made during the waiver period, the exercise is time-consuming and creates a lot of administrative paperwork that even Major League Baseball would love to eliminate. “It’s just a stupid exercise,” said one National League official. “You pass players ...

Fangraphs: Jackie Bradley, Jr. and the Error Rule

To summarize:

1. The MLB rules state that the part of the error rule about ordinary effort is an objective standard.

2. The part of the error rule that says it’s all dependent on the judgment of the official scorer establishes a subjective standard.

3. Statcast is more 1. than 2.

IMO the standard of “ordinary effort” applies to any part of the fielding process, not the sum total. If a fielder gets an extraordinary jump, runs with extraordinary speed on an unusually efficient route, and ...

OTP 2018 August 13: ‘Don’t confuse sports with politics,’ Kosovo tells Bosnia

Kosovo’s team was scheduled to play against the Bosnia and Herzegovina side on Thursday, the first day of the tournament which runs until August 16.

However the Kosovo Basketball Federation (FBK) told local media that by late Wednesday it still had not received an answer from Bosnia’s nearest embassy in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, about the status of the team’s visa applications.

10 Yrs Later - Reflecting on maybe the Craziest Red Sox Game Of All

Consider the basics:

- In the bottom of the first inning, the Red Sox took a 10-0 lead over the Texas Rangers, sparked by two 3-run home runs by David Ortiz.

- The Rangers rallied to take a 16-14 lead.

- The Sox responded, ultimately prevailing on a Kevin Youkilis 3-run home run with two outs in the 8thinning for a 19-17 win.

- The 36 runs scored tied a 58 (now 68)-year-old record for most runs scored in an American League game.

But what made this night truly bizarre, singularly weird ...

Ramon Laureano threw the s**t out of this baseball.

Ramon Laureano has played a total of five games in the majors, all this season, all since the start of August. It’s been a fun start! He’s already had a number of defensive highlights, and his first hit in the bigs was a walk-off game-winner in extras, in his first career game.

Kenley Jansen to be sidelined about a month

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen will miss about a month while being treated for an irregular heartbeat, a source tells MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal. The timeline was first reported by ESPN’s Buster Olney.

Jansen was hospitalized prior to Thursday night’s 8-5 win over the Rockies, and after initial tests, he flew back to Los Angeles to meet with his cardiologist for additional tests on Friday. Jansen felt the irregularity at the team hotel and never made it to Coors Field.

Scary stuff - ...
