San Diego’s handling of Triple-A skipper Murphy highly unusual

Pat Murphy is the Padres’ Triple-A manager. The Brewers want to hire him as a major-league coach. And the Padres have balked at letting him go.

A simple case of a team valuing an employee? Perhaps. But some in the industry view the Padres’ actions as highly unusual — and perhaps a sign that the Pads want Murphy to replace manager Bud Black or, at the very least, join the team’s coaching staff.

The Padres’ 20-20 record is fueling industry-wide speculation that Black could be in trouble. ...

Jacoby Ellsbury injuries are part of the $153M equation - Yankees Blog - ESPN

Yankees fans, speaking from experience, I suggest forming a support group.

Jacoby Ellsbury has shown some signs this season as to why he is a $153 million man. Nearly a quarter of the way through the season, there have more than a few flashes when Ellsbury has shown the ability to get on base and create runs, while playing excellent defense. It has been a reminder of how dynamic he can be.

But the issue with Ellsbury’s big deal the whole time—besides the fact that he has only had one truly ...

Health department data shows increase of critical violations at Arrowhead, Kauffman

Buy me some peanuts and rat feces, I don’t care if I violently get ill….

The number of critical health violations keeps going up at food stands at Kauffman Stadium & Arrowhead Stadium.

Critical violations at Kauffman this season (as of early May) have nearly surpassed the numbers for the entire 2012 season
“That should be a message to the managing company that we’re still doing inspections, we’re still citing violations, and probably they need to change some of their practices,” said ...

Full Count » Hanley Ramirez on shoulder: ‘There’s some pain in there’

Hanley plays the Green Monster as if he thinks it’s electrified. It’s OK, Hanley, you can touch it. Alas, he’ll probably be out there all year. Maybe they should move him to 1B next year to replace Napoli before moving him into Ortiz’s DH spot in 2017.

Yoan Moncada notches first minor league hit - Sports - The Boston Globe

Now that his first hit is out of the way, I hope he can soon get that whole “walking on water” thing out of the way.

And then, finally, the reprieve arrived. Once again batting lefthanded against righthander Evan Beal, he swung at a 91-mile-per-hour first-pitch fastball on the hands and cued the ball down the third base line. He beat the throw by plenty, and the ball immediately was sent out of the game for authentication by MLB officials.

Perhaps he took a deep breath. Other members of the ...

You can’t stop Jimmy Paredes, you just hope he doesn’t have to wear a glove!

Jimmy Paredes homered and had a career-high four RBIs, and the Baltimore Orioles overcame a home run by former teammate Nelson Cruz in a 9-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

Paredes singled in two runs in the fourth inning and added a two-run drive off Danny Farquhar (0-2) in the sixth. Starting on a regular basis for the first time in his career, Paredes has reached base in 20 straight games and ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-20-2015

Toledo News-Bee, May 20, 1915:

Canadian soldiers in France who want to spend the intermissions between battles in playing baseball will be supplied by American leaders of the game with the paraphernalia which they cannot obtain readily abroad.

The soldiers complained first to their friends and relatives in Canada that baseballs, bats and gloves were scarce in France. Official attention was called, with the result that President Ban Johnson of the American league and others were appealed to.

TV Ratings Up, But Teams Still Dependent on Cable Providers

Baseball is dead.

Before getting to baseball’s dependence on the health of major cable companies, here is a brief look at some early season numbers. The first month of the season has seen big increases in viewership for national games on Fox Sports 1 and MLB Network, including double the amount of viewers aged 18 to 34 watching game on Fox Sports 1. The Chicago Cubs have doubled their ratings after their increased commitment in the offseason as well as the arrival of Kris Bryant. The Kansas ...

Film Nerd 2.0: Heartbreak at the Center of the Original ‘Bad News Bears’

The boys laughed at a lot of the film, but Toshi grew quieter as the film played. For Allen, all it took was Tanner (Chris Barnes) calling someone a “booger-eating moron” and he was all aboard. He laughed at the baseball errors, he cheered for every terrible thing Tanner said, and he told me Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley) was “awesome.” When Buttermaker had his big breakdown and tells Amanda that he doesn’t want to see her between seasons, Toshi moved from the chair where he was sitting to the ...

Is lineup protection a myth or reality? It’s both, and that paradox is telling. - Beyond the Box Score

Lineup protection exists—it also doesn’t. Baseball players are aware of lineup protection and modify their approach because of it, even though their managers might have a different idea entirely of what lineup protection means. Batters think about protection, too, and part of successful hitting is the ability to think with the game as it’s happening. However, modified approaches don’t alter results in any meaningful way, as analysts such as Tom Tango and Jeff Sullivan show.

The ...

Q & A with “Benchwarmer” Author Josh Wilker

Josh Wilker, the author of “Cardboard Gods,” one of the best-ever baseball books not necessarily about baseball, is back with another memoir.  This time, it chronicles his first year as a new father, and the insecurities (and joys) therein.  “Benchwarmer” presents his son Jack’s first year, while also detailing, in almanac form, the annals of all-time benchwarmers/sad sacks. Its not the easiest subject matter to traverse, as Wilker lays his first-time fatherhood neuroses and raw ...

Velocity and the Likelihood of Tommy John Surgery | Community – FanGraphs Baseball

Don’t want to get hurt, stop throwing so hard.

As you can see these results are more in line with Dr. Fleisig’s results (25% Major League pitchers). I don’t think it’s unreasonable there are some differences, however. This would depend on our methods of gathering the data and how we defined what a Major League pitcher is. My definition was very loose. Basically if a pitcher came up and threw one inning, then I put him in the results. The reason why I didn’t have a stricter definition of ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-19-2015

Pittsburgh Press, May 19, 1915:
