MiLBY: Houston Astros grow into best farm system | News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

The Astros are clearly doing something right.

“The most important measure of a system is, ‘How does it graduate its players?’” Luhnow said. “We were able to do that pretty well this year, especially in the case of Correa. The guys who came up were much accomplished, and we think that’s because they had the experience of winning in the Minor Leagues. We’re always walking the fine line between winning and development, though, and when we can do both, it’s a reflection on the scouts and coaches we ...

Lee Smith: Here Comes Dusty Baker

Ok, it’s true the Nats made something of a hash of the hiring process. A week before the club announced that Dusty had the job, news leaked that they were going to name Bud Black, a former big league pitcher who managed the San Diego Padres for eight years until he was fired midway through the 2015 campaign. Reportedly, the sticking point was that Black felt Nationals’ owner Ted Lerner low-balled him, with an initial offer of $1.6 million for one year. Eventually, Lerner offered Black three ...

Tigers prospect JaCoby Jones suspended 50 games

Tigers shortstop prospect JaCoby Jones has been suspended 50 games following a second positive test for a drug of abuse.

Detroit acquired Jones from Pittsburgh in the midseason trade for reliever Joakim Soria and he finished the year at Double-A. Picked in the third round of the 2013 draft, Jones hit .257 with 16 homers, 25 steals, and a .737 OPS in 133 total games between Single-A and Double-A this season.

‘World Series’ Ratings Hit 12-Year Game 5 Viewership High

People must have tuned in to see Joe Buck’s beard!

The final scores are in, at least for one of the big games last night, and you have to call it a home run for Fox. With an audience of 17.2 million watching the Kansas City Royals beat the New York Mets 7-2 in Game 5 of the 2015 World Series, the net saw the highest Game 5 viewership since 2003. That Game 5 between the New York Yankees and the Florida Marlins snagged a crowd of 19.9 million. Let’s add some more history to that and note that ...

FanGraphs Crowd: The Top 82 Free Agents | FanGraphs Baseball

Players are ranked by total median projected contract value — and then, in such cases where players have received the same median contract estimate, by the total average contract value. A spreadsheet containing the results is available here. Statistics are from 2015. Offensive and defensive value are expressed relative to league average. Defensive value accounts both for defensive runs and positional adjustment. One can read more about both metrics here.

Royals’ remarkable run rewards fans beyond belief

Rany, they are all good.

So here’s to the 2015 Royals, for taking us there. For being the team I’ve waited my entire life to root for. For dominating the regular season from start to finish. For being the most unkillable baseball team October has ever seen. For finishing the season with a Game 5 that so perfectly embodied their season that it’s as if they had planned it all along.

If I live another 50 years, I may never see another Royals championship. Even if I do, I will probably never see ...

Judge rules in favor of Orioles in MASN Court Case

Nearly six months after the trial hearing, and three years after the dispute began between MASN and the Nationals, the verdict is in on the court case involving tens of millions of dollars of rights fees. The thirty-page decision provides the immediate conclusion that the court has thrown out the ruling made by baseball’s panel - a victory for the Orioles - but offers no other resolution to the case.

Terry Collins, Mets agree on two-year extension, sources say | Newsday

Collins is not a good tactical manager. I’m still shocked that he let Harvey talk him into staying in the game. I’m even more shocked that he also left him in after he served up a leadoff walk.

Now, Collins has been given the opportunity to chase another championship, and to do so on his own terms. Sources told Newsday on Tuesday that Collins, 66, agreed to a new two-year contract that will keep him in the Mets’ dugout through the 2017 season.

The deal officially will be announced Wednesday at ...

Bowden: Lerner Wouldn’t Pay For Joe Girardi, so Nats got Manny Acta

“None of us should be surprised at this,” said Bowden, who resigned as Nationals GM in 2009 amid an FBI investigation of illegal scouting practices in Latin America. “The Lerner families have a history of this. When I was the GM there, Joe Girardi was the selection of the baseball people there, a recommendation by me. The ownership was not willing to pay Joe Girardi what was fair, so Manny Acta was the manager, and that was the guy who ended up running the team. Joe Girardi went on to the ...

Svrluga: View of Nats Organization Not Entirely Pleasant

Executive summary: teh Lerners are CHEEEEEEEP!

The Lerners already had shown, in their dealing with previous managers, that they don’t put much value in the position. They have never paid a premium for a manager, even as they developed a roster that was good enough to win a World Series. This, people familiar with the franchise’s structure said, is typical of how the club operates.

Let’s build a Scouting Report on Lucas Duda’s arm

You’ve got an opinion on the Eric Hosmer play. Y’know, the one where he broke from third on a ground ball that didn’t get out of the infield grass and scored the tying run in the ninth inning of the World Series? Y’know, the one where if he would have been out, the game would have been over but he wasn’t and now the Royals are world champions? That’s the one. You’ve got an opinion on the Hosmer play, I’ve got an opinion on the Hosmer play, and even if you say you don’t have an ...

Griffith has made it known that he intends to have Judge, a youngster of only 20 years, at the bag when the season opens, and it is not a secret that with this in view he intends to make some sort of a disposition of Gandil. Washington Post: Bud Black, Nationals Have Contract Issues; Dusty Baker Reportedly Being Reconsidered

If your hire isn’t worth market rate, maybe something needs to be reevaluated:

Five days after the Washington Nationals picked veteran Bud Black to be their next manager, the team did not announce a hiring Monday because contract talks crumbled over the weekend, according to people familiar with the situation. The deal wasn’t expected to be announced until after a contract was signed and after the World Series. But the playoffs ended Sunday and there was still no public word from the team ...
