Tom Seaver on how Mets are mishandling their ‘stud muffins’ | New York Post

Stupid fight-winning computer!!

The right-hander with 311 victories over 20 major league seasons and the leader of the world champion 1969 Mets also is keeping a close eye on the pitching renaissance going on at Citi Field. He is doing that the old-fashioned way, looking at box scores every morning.

He loves what he sees of the Mets young staff, which includes All-Star Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and the injured Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler.

He wants to see one number increase ...

Mets get Braves’ Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson | MLB.com

Mets get some help. The Braves save some cash and add more pitching depth to their minor league system.

Stuck among the National League’s worst offensive teams for most of this summer, the Mets on Friday saw their season-long hunt for offense finally bear fruit. The club announced late Friday that it has acquired third baseman Juan Uribe, utility man Kelly Johnson and cash from the Braves, in exchange for pitching prospects John Gant and Rob Whalen.

Baltimore Brewery Commemorates Cal Ripken Jr.‘s Streak with New Beer

Heavy Seas Beer, a Baltimore-based brewery, will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130 consecutive games played with a special “Fielder’s Choice” brew featuring Ripken-themed packaging.

Apparently Wade Boggs will try to drink 2,131 of them.

A Zack Greinke Story - Joe Posnanski

Figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a Greinke thread around, given the streak. Plus, there’s a fun story from Posnanski.

So Gordon was pretty excited when Greinke called him into the video room. He figured that Greinke must have found something in his swing, something small, some little flaw that he could fix and it would turn his entire season around. He followed Greinke to to the monitor. Greinke turned it on.

Orioles’ free fall continues as Yankees complete sweep with 9-3 win - Baltimore Sun

Jones has the right attitude.

The Orioles dropped to 19-30 on the road this season with their ninth loss in their past 12 games away from Camden Yards. They couldn’t leave New York quick enough, looking to salvage their nine-game road trip with three games against the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend

“What else are you going to do, dwell on it? No man. That’s not good for sports,” said Orioles center fielder Adam Jones, who was 0-for-4 Thursday and 2-for-12 in the series. “It’s not good ...

Grand Forks Daily Herald, July 24, 1915:

HITLESS INDIAN GIVEN RELEASE

[Jim] Thorpe’s inability to hit anything except straight ball pitching, which opposing twirlers took care that he did not get, proved too great a handicap for even this great athlete. Passed on to ther Jersey City club of the International league, his weakness was so apparent to all pitchers that the hitless Indian was dropped from the class AA league as valueless.

As I’ve said before, Thorpe hit .303 with solid power numbers ...

Mets promote Michael Conforto, place Michael Cuddyer on disabled list

I will go on record as saying this is a bad idea. Setting this kid up as the offensive savior is not a smart thing to do after less than 50 games at Double-A.

The Michael Conforto Era has begun in Flushing.

The Mets announced on Friday that they purchased Conforto’s contract from Double-A Binghamton on Friday and placed outfielder Michael Cuddyer on the 15-day disabled list.

MLB Players’ Association upset by Colin Cowherd’s comments on Dominicans

As punishment, he should be forced to watch only ESPN content for the next week. I know that’s cruel but if even one person, let alone a whole country, is offended the punishment must certainly be the harshest possible.

Talking on his national radio show, which is simulcast on ESPNU, Cowherd was making a point about whether a general manager had the capability of stepping down from the executive office and adeptly handling managerial duties, as the Miami Marlins’ Dan Jennings has been asked to ...

Source: Cubs chasing Cole Hamels, David Price not in play yet | CSN Chicago

MLB sources confirmed to me this afternoon that the Cubs have been in discussions with the Philadelphia Phillies on a deal for Cole Hamels who has three years left on his current contract plus an option year. While he is an expensive piece he fits the needs of the team to upgrade their rotation while adding a player who would be a part of the team beyond the rest of this season. The Cubs will probably add an additional starter for depth perhaps as a rental type but that is not expected to be a ...

The Change: Collin McHugh and Bad Fastballs | FanGraphs Fantasy Baseball

Nice analysis from Eno Harris.

For how often he throws his breaking balls, McHugh is still getting excellent whiffs on those pitches. But don’t let that blind you to the fact that his fastball is not very good. With every tick he loses on the pitch, the more likely he is to give up home runs on it. He’s been hiding the pitch since he got in the league, but there’s not really any place to hide the fastball further when you’re throwing it less than anybody else in baseball not named R.A. ...

Acquiring Kazmir gives players a lift on and off field - Houston Chronicle

“I feel an obligation to support them in a situation where I can do something to help them win,” Luhnow said. “They care as much as anybody, because they’re on the team.

“I think when you don’t make a move, even though sometimes that’s the right thing to do, people can misinterpret it as they’re not being supported. Now I would never make a move … just to make them feel supported, but it’s the right move to make, and it’s in our domain to make it.”

A moment of hard truth about the Mets’ owners | Capital New York

Accordingly, when someone like Ben Zobrist, a utility player long coveted by the front office, becomes available, Alderson faces this: WFAN’s Ed Coleman reported that the Mets don’t want to pay the remaining balance on Zobrist’s 2015 salary, between $2-3 million.

That’s outrageous. That amount is a small fraction of the found money the team has recovered from the insurance policy on David Wright’s contract—75 percent of his $20 million contract after the first 60 days missed. It’s an even ...

Bowden: Anatomy of a trade (INSIDER)

BODES!

I’ll be honest, the first trade proposal is usually lopsided and often downright embarrassing. I can’t tell you how many times a GM has offered me two utility players for an All-Star. But it’s important to be polite and respectful … while offering a quick counter that favors your team, albeit with a little less margin. That puts the conversation on track if it’s going to go anywhere. Then you have these conversations with other teams. Working on multiple deals at the same time—with an ...

Top 10 Fantasy Prospects: Conforto Coming? - BaseballAmerica.com

1. Michael Conforto, of, Mets

Update: Conforto raked at high Class A St. Lucie and has been even better since a promotion to Double-A Binghamton, slashing .317/.401/.518 in 43 games.

Prognosis: Drafted No. 10 overall just a year ago out of Oregon State, Conforto is forcing the Mets’ hand into considering a callup quicker than they would like. An inept offense and an injury to Michael Cuddyer have Conforto on the precipice of a major league stint and scouts believe his lefthanded bat and ...

Rosenthal Report: Tigers may be willing to trade Price | FOX Sports

Robothal’s latest.

The question remains: How good can Puig be?

He has made an effort to be a better teammate since the All-Star break, sources say. But the far more relevant concern is his performance.

Puig’s OPS in July is only .623, and he remains vulnerable to high velocity. Scherzer struck him out three times Sunday, with fastballs registering 95 and 97 mph and a slider registering 87.

Consider:
Puig, in 62 at-bats this season ending on fastballs between 89 and 94 mph, has batted .403 ...

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred says trade deadline may need to be moved back

Keep the trade deadline where it is.

Commissioner Rob Manfred thinks baseball may need to consider moving the trade deadline back to give teams in the hunt for a wild card more time.

A second wild card in each league was added in 2012, keeping more teams in playoff contention long past the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. And those clubs may not have enough time to evaluate whether their rosters are good enough to get one.

“I think that the July 31st deadline is something that we may want to ...
