NYT - Scandal Erupts in Unregulated World of Fantasy Sports

A major scandal is erupting in the multibillion-dollar industry of fantasy sports, the online and unregulated business in which players assemble their fantasy teams with real athletes. On Monday, the two major fantasy companies were forced to release statements defending their businesses’ integrity after what amounted to allegations of insider trading, that employees were placing bets using information not available to the public.

U.S Supreme Court rejects San Jose’s bid for Athletics

The U.S. Supreme Court closed the door Monday on San Jose’s bid for the Oakland A’s, turning aside the South Bay city’s claim that Major League Baseball has used illegal monopoly powers to block the relocation.
The court said without comment that it would not take up the case on appeal. The decision ended San Jose’s attempt to lure the A’s away from Oakland by challenging baseball’s unique exemption from federal antitrust laws, which restrict monopolies and encourage competition. ...

Bernanke: More execs should have gone to jail for causing Great Recession

Bernanke loves baseball for the same reason he chose economics as his profession: the power and clarity of numbers.

“The numbers are so concrete,” he says in a conversation in the Nats press box before a game against the Miami Marlins on a sunny afternoon last month. “In baseball, you’ve got all the data going back to the 1880s for all the players, and if you understand how to use numbers, it makes it come alive.”

CC Sabathia checks into alcohol rehab, will not pitch in postseason

It hurts me deeply to do this now, but I owe it to myself and to my family to get myself right. I want to take control of my disease, and I want to be a better man, father and player.

Cubs’ Kris Bryant has top-selling MLB jersey

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant had the best-selling jersey in all of Major League Baseball during the regular season, according to sales on the league’s official website.

The 23-year-old Bryant is the youngest player to lead the top-20 list, though youth is a theme among those that come off the racks the quickest.

St. Barry - Who Should Replace Matt Williams

So it would make sense, as the Nationals look for Williams’ replacement following his inevitable firing Monday, that they would veer the opposite direction, that they would hire someone with experience. It’s a typical response in sports: The defensive coach in football failed? Hire an offensive guy. Davey Johnson was too laissez faire with his players? Bring in the Big Marine.

Yeah, yeah, the Nats finally fired Matty. Now what??

Nationals fire manager Matt Williams after two seasons

I wonder if he has lost the clubhouse now.

The Washington Nationals have fired manager Matt Williams after two seasons, according to James Wagner of the Washington Post.

The Nationals were projected by many to be World Series contenders in 2015, but failed to make the postseason, going just 83–79 and ceding the NL East to the New York Mets.

Williams took the job in 2014 as a first-time skipper and led the Nationals to a 96–66 record, earning NL Manager of the Year honors. Washington was ...

A’s look for reasons behind disappointing season

Quick, trade someone for John Mabry!

Manager Bob Melvin has a reputation for getting through to guys, and it’s clear the A’s don’t fault Melvin for the unfortunate mix; he recently received a two-year contract extension. Oakland’s front office, not a big proponent of the “chemistry” theory, recognizes that this particular group simply didn’t click.

“Anytime you have so many new players, getting the clubhouse to come together is going to be a challenge,” assistant general ...

Pittsburgh Press, October 5, 1915:

The baseball scores by innings carried to him from the ball grounds by carrier pigeons is the latest “wireless” stunt of Justice W. H. Crum, of Conemaugh [Pennsylvania]. Squire Crum is a cripple. He is unable to get around like other rabid fans.

Lauber: Keeping John Farrell, Torey Lovullo benefits individuals, team | Boston Herald

The Red Sox bring back Farrell and lock up Lovullo as well.

And so, Dombrowski came up with what he called a “fallback plan.” He asked ownership to offer Lovullo a two-year contract that would pay him a salary that Dombrowski described as being in the “upper echelon” of bench coaches. In turn, Lovullo would forfeit any managerial opportunities that figured to come his way.

Dombrowski approached Lovullo during the Red Sox’ final homestand, and after thinking about it for several days, ...

As for Murphy, who spent six seasons managing in the Padres’ system at various levels, he talked late last week about this experience and the biggest regret that he had.

Although it may be true for teams with bad front offices people, for 99.9% of the teams there is no way the manager and coaching staff should know the players better than the General Manager.

Marlins express interest in Bowa as Phils make coaching changes

Break out the Bushmills!

Bench coach Larry Bowa, hitting coach Steve Henderson, first base coach Juan Samuel and pitching coach Bob McClure were all offered contracts for 2016. Henderson and McClure are expected to accept the offers, but Bowa and Samuel could move on for other opportunities.

According to sources, the Phillies have granted the Miami Marlins permission to speak with Bowa about their manager’s job. The Marlins have already interviewed Bo Porter and Manny Acta for that job.

Mark Buehrle to throw two innings on Sunday, then retire

Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports that Blue Jays starter Mark Buehrle will pitch two innings on Sunday, then retire. He is not expected to be included on the Blue Jays’ post-season roster.

Two more innings would bring Buehrle to 200 innings for a 15th consecutive season. The 36-year-old has vastly outpaced the competition in this category, as his closest competitor since 2001 is James Shields, with nine 200-inning seasons.

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: For baseball’s wild-card format, changes could be on the horizon - The Boston Globe

Dumbest idea ever.

Here’s an idea from a longtime baseball executive: invert the current format. In other words, have the wild card teams battle it out over five or seven games.

This would reward teams for fighting so hard for the wild-card spots. The feeling is that by the trade deadline wild-card teams have given up, in many cases, top young talent to compete for one game.

The Division Series and Championship Series would be seven games, according to this plan, and the World Series? It ...

Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos wants to remain with Toronto next year but he’d prefer his contract not be ‘a story’ | National Post

Smart guy.

Only one detail has ever been leaked about his contract: that it covered five years and that it expires on Oct. 31. Even that much information is too much for his taste. He understands why players’ salaries are public, but he sees no reason why contract details of other club employees should be revealed.

Yelich, Gordon Have Special Days as Marlins Sweep Phillies - The New York Times

Dee Gordon got his 200th hit of the season in the opener, and Christian Yelich tied a club record with hits in eight straight at-bats as the Miami Marlins won the nightcap 5-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday.

Yelich was 5 for 5 in the first game, a 7-6 victory, then hit safely in his first three at-bats in the second. In the first game, Gordon became the first Marlins player since Hanley Ramirez in 2007 to record 200 hits with a sixth-inning single.

Ode to Affeldt

Everything about that game felt flat, lifeless, colorless, like the whole scene had degenerated into black and white. I was sitting in the scout section with the Royals’ general manager at the time, Allard Baird, and we were talking about family and life and anything that came to mind to distract us from the dullness of the game itself.

And then Jeremy Affeldt entered.

If Astros and Angels win, then there is an AL West tie between the Rangers and Astros and they will play (at Arlington) to determine who goes to ALDS and who faces Yankees (who will host WC game if they win against Orioles) in WC game.

If Astros lose and Angels win, then Angels and Astros face off (in HOU) for Wild Card spot at Yankees.

If Astros win and Angels lose, then Rangers are AL West champs and Astros are in WC game
