David Price plagued with left elbow woes again | MLB.com

Ugh.

A topsy-turvy season for Red Sox lefty David Price has added another twist, as the starting pitcher will miss his start Friday and will likely go back on the 10-day disabled list with recurring left elbow woes, a source told MLB.com. Brian Johnson will start Friday night against the Royals.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-28-2017

Chicago Eagle, July 28, 1917:

Harry Heilman [sic], Tiger outfielder, had an experience recently which…will keep him glued to his seat in the Pullman when traveling about the country.

The Tigers were going from Boston to Baltimore to play a Sunday exhibition game. The train hesitated at New London, Conn., and Heilman got off to get some sandwiches…While he was purchasing the grub the whistle blew and off went the rattler minus Heilman.

Harry had the change from a five-spot and a couple of ...

Athletics Stuck On Frazier Or Torres From The Yankees For Gray

Heyman reports.

The Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees aren’t believed close to any deal yet in talks about Sonny Gray, as Oakland is said to have asked for packages that include either outfielder Clint Frazier or shortstop Gleyber Torres, two young players the Yankees have suggested are off-limits.

The A’s, in a deep sellers’ market, have named the very top prospects in talks to this point. From the Brewers, they are believed to like outfielder Lewis Brinson, and from the Braves ...

Rangers ‘confident’ in trading Yu Darvish | MLB.com

MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal first reported Thursday night that the Rangers plan to move the right-hander and are “confident” they will get a quality trade for Darvish.
This latest twist thrusts Darvish to the top of the trade market, surpassing Oakland’s Sonny Gray and Detroit’s Justin Verlander despite a brutal outing Wednesday night that saw Darvish allow 10 earned runs in only 3 2/3 innings against the Marlins.

The Dodgers were reportedly interested in dealing for Darvish even ...

MLBTR: Rays To Acquire Lucas Duda

The Duda now abides in St. Pete.

Though the Rays have their own breakout offensive performer at first in Logan Morrison, the team has room for another big left-handed bat. With outfielder Colby Rasmus hanging up his spikes mid-way through the year, the Rays could utilize Corey Dickerson in the outfield to allow Duda to step in at DH.

Smith, 23, was a third-round pick in the 2015 draft. He made his way to the Rays as the player to be named later in the winter deal that sent Mikie Mahtook to the ...

Rosario notches second four-hit game for 51s | MiLB.com News

What Amed Rosario needs to work on.

In the seventh, Rosario lined an 0-1 pitch to center before completing his night with a run-scoring single to center in the ninth.

“Whenever he stays up the middle with his approach, you know he’s on,” Lopez added. “The main thing for him right now is to control the strike zone and have better at-bats, and make sure he’s up the middle with his approach. We want him to get to know the zone a little better and he’s doing well with it.”

For Phillies, emulating Astros’ ascent requires much more than high picks | CSN Philly

Luck has always been part of The Process.

“It’s similar in a lot of ways (to the Sixers’ process) and I know [Sam Hinkie], he used to be in Houston. He and I have talked a lot about what he was doing here and what I was doing there — there are a lot of analogies. You have to be patient to wait for the results to manifest themselves. Sometimes you get a good roll of the dice, sometimes you don’t.”

BAR: Hoarding prospects a proven strategy

The Dodgers are the model big-market team right now. They need to win the World Series to be fully appreciated, however.

The top farm system in 2015? The Cubs, the 2016 World Series champs. Not counting the Cubs since it’s been too recent — of all the teams with the top farm system, all but three have been in the playoffs at least three times within five years of being named the top farm system. Those three were the 2006 Diamondbacks, National League West winners in 2007 and 2011, the 2014 ...

Pittsburgh Press, July 27, 1917:

A new use for baseball slang has been found. The story is told by a writer describing the experiences of Americans inside the German lines…It was necessary that one American having knowledge of [the news] should acquaint another with what was going on, but the Germans were on watch, listening for every word.
...
[An American said to another:] “Nix on any of these spangled delicatessens (German officers) getting wise, but the umpire-in-chief has chased Heinie out ...

Bryce Harper got thrown out of a game because his playlist got him too fired up

“Before the game today, I think I need to change my playlist because I get a little fired up from my playlist,” said Harper, citing a mix of Logic and Chance the Rapper as the instigator.

” ‘5AM’ really got me fired up, by Logic. I called my brother and was like, ‘Man, I’m so fired up to play today,’ ” Harper said. “I guess it got me a little too fired up. I guess I need to mix in some Temptations and some of those jazz bands to calm me down a little bit.”

Yankees have a new ace — and reason for Sonny Gray restraint | New York Post

Talk about holding velocity. He was still hitting 99-100 MPH late in his appearance. Watching him throw 100 MPH on one pitch, then drop an 83 MPH sinking change on the corner was very impressive.

“That term gets thrown around loosely these days,” longtime former ace CC Sabathia said when I asked him whether Severino had earned that moniker. “But yeah, for what that term is, yeah, he is.”

“He’s thrown the best all year for us,” Girardi, who fielded the same question before ...

The Architecture of Sports

Baseball through a spatial lens.

Not all sports require absolute uniformity in their playing fields. Some allow and even celebrate degrees of variation. All baseball parks consist of the diamond (a square, technically) in which the locations and dimensions of the bases, pitcher’s mound, batter’s boxes, and other features are strictly standardized, and the outfield, for which Major League Baseball specifies only minimum dimensions (325 feet along the first base and third base lines and 400 ...

Ken Rosenthal - Rumblings from Clubs

The rumblings persist, mostly from rival clubs.

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto is going to make another trade, perhaps his biggest yet.

Jerry Dipoto is going to get Sonny Gray.

At the moment, there appears to be little basis to the rumblings — the Mariners and Athletics have not spoken in about a week, according to one major-league source.

In addition, there also is significant doubt whether the Mariners possess enough young talent to land Gray, with one rival exec saying, “I ...

Tim Tebow’s no circus act: He’s a real Mets prospect

There are plenty of sound business reasons why it would have been wise anyway to keep Tebow away from Citi Field as some kind of marketing ploy, beginning with the very credibility of the franchise, which is supposed to be in the business of developing baseball players, not carnival barkers.

But now the Mets have the best reason of all to forget about that.

What if Tebow really is what these last 27 games and 87 at-bats have hinted at? In the Florida State League, the most advanced level of ...

Twins-Dodgers game delayed over double switch | MLB.com

Strategery!

“It was just one of those things where there was a little confusion in where initially the pitcher spot in the double switch was at,” Roberts said. “A player that was supposed to be out of the game was still in the game, and I just wanted to get clarity and make sure that the pitcher was in the right spot.”
