White Sox catcher Geovany Soto says he doesn’t have the yips | Chicago

Nobody likes having the yips.

Geovany Soto’s ritual after every pitch has mystified baseball fans, and on Friday night, A’s broadcaster Eric Chavez seemed to believe Soto suffered from some version of the “yips.”

The White Sox catcher falls forward every time he throws the ball back to the pitcher, and he appears to grab some dirt in his throwing hand and wipe off home plate after each pitch.

Doug Fister placed on DL with forearm tightness; A.J. Cole recalled (UPDATED) - The Washington Post

The Washington Nationals fearsome starting rotation suffered a blow Friday when Doug Fister was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right forearm tightness. The Nationals wouldn’t speculate on the severity of the injury, although elbow injuries sometimes present themselves with symptoms in the forearm.

Josh Hamilton of Texas Rangers—Los Angeles Angels front office prevented me from talking to owner Arte Moreno

Actually, Josh, there is one person responsible for you…you.

“When you haven’t been yourself for a while, it’s not that easy to just flip back over and do it every time,” said Hamilton, who was 4-of-19 with two RBIs in Round Rock. “You need people around you that can remind you and help get you back to where you need to be.”

Marshall needs second shoulder surgery | reds.com

This is not good.

Reds left-handed reliever Sean Marshall’s efforts to come back from shoulder surgery took a terrible turn when it was revealed he will need another season-ending operation in the same shoulder.

Marshall is scheduled to have surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder. Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek will perform the procedure.

MLB, Atlantic League Sign Player Transfer Agreement

It’s one small step for baseball, one giant leap for the Atlantic League.

Very quietly this January, the Atlantic League signed a formal agreement with Major League Baseball to put on paper the league’s rules for transferring player contracts to Major League Baseball teams and their affiliates.

In practical terms, very little has changed. The Atlantic League has been selling the contracts of hundreds of players to affiliated ball in past years. The new formalized agreement doesn’t ...

Troy Tulowitzki’s Trade Value | FanGraphs Baseball

The Red Sox aren’t in the Tulo market. Bogaerts has made some real strides defensively this season. He’s still 22. Eventually he’ll be a really good hitter.

Boston

This is the one place where a one-shiny-thing offer actually could work, as the Red Sox would be displacing Xander Bogaerts if they acquired Tulo to take over at shortstop, so if the Rockies prefer one big asset over several smaller ones, this is probably their best fit. But if the Rockies want pitching, the Red Sox might not be the ...

Boston skipper regrets pitching to Cruz | redsox.com

If Farrell could do it over again, he would have had Layne intentionally walk Cruz. And then the southpaw could have faced left-handed batter Kyle Seager.

Instead, Farrell called on Tazawa, daring Cruz to beat the Red Sox. And that he did.

“Yeah, we’ve got it set up, two outs, [can] easily take the bat out of his hand, walk him, then you get a left on left with Layne and Seager. As we sit here in this moment after the walk-off, that’s the move to make,” said Farrell. “Like I said, terrible ...

Rockies GM Jeff Bridich blasts media, has no plans to trade Troy Tulowitzki - The Denver Post

“What’s gone on the last few days, especially the last 72 hours, really has a been a media production, more than anything else,” Bridich said. “It started with a couple of articles coming out of the East Coast — MLB.com and another one on NewYorkPost.com. Since then, it’s really been mostly a media production.”

Bridich said the Rockies’ recent woes stoked the Tulo trade talk.

“In my opinion, it’s something that has come out of a tough two week stretch for the Rockies, and one, obviously, ...

FiveThirtyEight:  Chase Utley Is The Unluckiest Man In Baseball

Meet Chase Utley, the unluckiest man in baseball. The Phillies second baseman is cursed with a .115 batting average on balls in play (BABIP), meaning that about a tenth of the balls he puts on the field get him safely to base. An average BABIP mark is about .300, and while there is some variation between players, it’s usually on the order of a few dozen points, not 200.

Some have argued that Utley ought to be benched. Given his age (36) and the wear and tear second basemen face, Utley could ...

Hosmer’s Odyssey: Is It Finally Time to Believe in Kansas City’s Mercurial First Baseman?

I WANT TO BELIEVE

More broadly, Hosmer is hitting the ball harder and killing worms less often than ever before: His ground ball rate sits at 46.8 percent, and he’s on pace to hit into fewer double plays than in any previous season. Meanwhile, he’s been a line-drive machine, whacking liners at a career-high rate of 26.1 percent.3 Not coincidentally, he’s hitting the ball harder than he has in three years,4 and he’s pulling the ball more than ever before (38.5 percent of the time).

Here’s to Dee Gordon, Inefficient Old-School Beauty «

What are the break-even points in the current run-scoring environment? I recall reading a good article on the topic fairly recently but a quick Google search turned up empty.

Well, Dee Gordon runs the bases like a teenager drives: aggressively, quickly, and with no regard for his or anyone else’s safety. He’s attempted 19 stolen bases in 32 games this season, which is awesome, even if his 12-for-19 success rate is well below the accepted break-even point.

Report: Mariners turned down Red Sox’s trade offer for Jackie Bradley Jr.

Maybe because the return for Bradley was NSFW?

As a 25-year-old former top prospect who has struggled in the majors what is Red Sox outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.’s value at this point?

Well, according to Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston the Red Sox offered Bradley to the Mariners for left-handed reliever Charlie Furbush during spring training and Seattle turned it down.

Since then Bradley has been playing at Triple-A, hitting .343 in 24 games, and now he’s back in Boston for another call-up. ...

Harper: Mets manager Collins delivers a call to action - NY Daily News

Sorry, Flores is not the answer at shortstop for the Mets.

As for the young players to whom Collins referred, he was thinking mostly of Wilmer Flores, who forever seems to be in the glare of the spotlight because of his questions about whether he can play shortstop.

Flores made what turned out to be a critical error — his eighth of the season — in the fifth inning, a big part of the Cubs’ four-run rally that tied the game.

Dressed to the Nines event another sign of Negro Leagues museum’s staying power | The Kansas City Star The Kansas City Star

The coolest, most ingenious, realest reason to believe in the future of an irreplaceable and often endangered crown of Kansas City is a pressed suit, sharp tie and matching pocket square.

Baseball Prospectus | Daisy Cutter: Shark Tank

The solution to Samardzija’s problems may not be that simple. It’s easy to say that he should just go to pitches that worked for him in the past more often; but currently, those pitches—the sinker and the split—are getting hit and hit hard. He’s using his slider, but he’s missing with it badly and frequently. Those are pitches that helped lead him to his best season ever, and they don’t appear to be having the same effect as they once did.

There’s no easy fix here. Samardzija ...

Burton III hit a three-run homer and earned his fourth pitching ...

Pittsburgh Press, May 15, 1915:

Herbert Pennock, the youthful twirler upon whom Connie Mack is relying heavily to bring the Athletics up in the race, is a Philadelphia boy, and once pitched for a high school there. So either there was a guy in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania named Kenneth Square, or this story is ...
