Sox in ‘15: Three options at second base - Chicago White Sox Blog - ESPN Chicago

This is the kind of problem a team wants. Both Micah Johnson and Marcus Semien look like good options at 2B.

How a Disgruntled Ace Gave the Royals a Full House - NYTimes.com

Moore and Melvin liked dealing with each other. Each had a scouting background and tended to trust traditional scouting methods more than advanced analytics.

“I have nothing against numbers, but everybody has the same numbers,” Melvin said. “When you’re talking about scouting and player development, that’s risk-taking. If Escobar’s hitting .170, that’s probably not a good deal for them. Same with Cain. But they did a nice job in the last years of their development.”

The teams ...

Theo says Cubs’ goal is to win division in ‘15 | cubs.com

Meeting with reporters after the fan session, Epstein joked they can go ahead and write columns criticizing the Cubs for missing out on some big-name free agents this offseason.
“To be the organization that we want to be—to be a world-class organization—you can’t be afraid of perception,” said Epstein. “You have to put yourself out there and look stupid at times. We’re going to miss on players by not signing them, we’re going to sign players who don’t work out. But we’re also going to sign ...

Poz: Going all the way back to 1977

Jack Brett raged at his nice boy son. And George Brett learned to fear failure. He learned to fear embarrassment. He learned to fear that voice, the rumbling voice of his father, tearing him apart over an error he made in the third or a swing out of the strike zone. After one such conversation, George tore the phone off the wall in the clubhouse. After more than one, he headed out into the night to find relief.

George Brett did not grow up to be a nice boy. He took a bat to the toilets in ...

Borowsky: The Cardinals need to reclaim spirit of ‘64 to heal St Louis’ racial tensions

Viva Larry Borowsky.

The Cardinals unite the city of St Louis as no other civic institution can. As the rest of the country has noted (with growing irritation), St Louisans take tremendous satisfaction in the success of our baseball team. Michael Brown was no exception; like almost every local kid, he identified as a proud member of Cardinal Nation. (The Cardinals hat he was wearing when he was shot rested atop his casket on the day of his funeral.) So, no doubt, do most of the officers who ...

Mark Appel Proved Wednesday The Big Stuff Is Back | FanGraphs Baseball

The total package is here for a #2 starter. An efficient delivery from a brick wall of a human being, two plus or better pitches and a third average pitch with signs of Major League pitchability. Unless the control hiccups are a harbinger of things to come (something that I’ll be on the lookout for the rest of the month here) I think he’ll be just fine.

Diamondbacks narrow list of potential managers

The sources would not identify the three candidates, but a report by USA Today listed four finalists for the position: Oakland A’s bench coach Chip Hale, Cleveland first-base coach Sandy Alomar Jr., Diamondbacks Triple-A manager Phil Nevin and former major-league manager Jim Tracy. Sources would not confirm nor deny the names in the report.

ESPN: MLB players want ‘voice’ in changes

In an offseason in which baseball has committed itself to speeding up the pace of games, several players told ESPN.com this week that players want “a voice” in this process and they’re concerned that, so far at least, no one except the players’ union has asked them what they thought.

“Players are very interested in being involved in these discussions,” veteran pitcher Kevin Slowey said. “We just want to be part of a collaborative effort to address these issues. And we want to ...

Buck Showalter and Ned Yost will be under intense scrutiny - ESPN

Major League Baseball’s division series action proved that big payrolls and star power can be overrated, while leaving plenty of managerial roadkill in its wake. Judging from the always measured and thoughtful public sentiment on Twitter, Brad Ausmus has no clue how to run a bullpen, Don Mattingly’s ability to make bad decisions knows no bounds, and Matt Williams isn’t equipped to run a convenience store, never mind a team with World Series aspirations.

There’s a report that the Dodgers are shopping Yasiel Puig. It makes no sense. | HardballTalk

Sorry, the idea that the Dodgers might be entertaining trading Puig isn’t as crazy as some people are suggesting. Everybody knows the Dodgers have extra outfielders. Last year the Dodgers juggled Kemp/Puig/Crawford/Ethier. They also had Scott Van Slyke contributing nicely. In the minors they have Joc Pederson seemingly ready. On top of that Alex Guerrero put up a .978 OPS in the minors last year. They clearly have an logjam in the outfield. Now, I’m sure they would much rather trade one of ...

Some good info on their methods and philosophies.

On methodology and valuation: “When you talk about our methodology, it’s not rocket science. It’s more, ‘Find a reliable metric; see what’s worked in the past and use it as a guide going forward.’ As a scouting director, I need to be disciplined to implement it and sell it to our department of scouts, who might not always agree with what we think the optimal decision is.

“Basically, we translate every piece of available ...

Orioles Reach Extension with J.J. Hardy

Today’s workout at Camden Yards will include an announcement that the Orioles have reached agreement with shortstop J.J. Hardy on a contract extension, according to an industry source.

Hardy, 32, was a pending free agent. Expected negotiations weren’t held during spring training and the sides agreed to hold off discussions during the regular season.

Hardy’s extension covers the next three seasons. FOX Sports is reporting that the value is north of $40 million.

United Press via Toledo News-Bee, October 9, 1914:

George Stallings, manager of the Boston Braves, appeased his desire for punching some one’s head today, when a fan became overserious in expressing his praise of the Athletics in Stallings’ presence. The unlucky fan was P.J. Callahan, who wore a tourist badge.

“We’ll show them,” chortled Callahan, kidding the Brave players in the lobby of the Majestic hotel. Then he ambled over to Stallings and repeated. Stallings grabbed Callahan and threw him ...
